It's almost that time of year again. In 5 short months the most underrated Modern/Classic Gaming convention in the country will be storming the beaches in Milwaukee for the umpteenth time. At this year's Octurbofest we hog tied some new recruits to potentially help out in setup and bringing gear. We are looking for more people as there never can be too much help in putting on the best show this side of the Mississippi. Those in the Midwest (or own a plane) who are interested in helping please PM either myself or forum member DHG Hunter.
Emails have been sent out to those who were interested at Octurbofest. Please take 5 minutes to let us know why you got into gaming. If you are a member of this forum then obviously you are passionate about retro gaming and we would really like to hear why! Hope to hear from yuz guyz soon! :D
The show will take place March 23rd and 24th at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, WI

I will probably miss it... again. :( Unless, of course, I get rich between now and then. If I happen to get rich between now and then, I will bring lots of stuff too. :)

Anyone interested in doing a "Get Rove to MGC fundraiser"? ;)
i just wish they would reply back to me about getting a table :/

Anyone who hasn't been to this event yet needs to make the trip this year. It's 2 days of complete and total insanity - you won't be disappointed!

Oh it's happening for sure this year. We putzed around last year with a couple cases but this time around I'm going all out. it's only a question of what kind of beer we're getting!
Thanks Mathius. Im not looking for anything too fancy- just one or two tables (two is better, but one will suffice). :D

cdamm... Were you the one I spoke with at Octurbofest?
The vendor area as it stands right now is "stupidly sold out" in the words of one of the guys that handles this, meaning there really isn't a way for them to sneak another table in that they can find. That said, I imagine you haven't gotten an e-mail yet because they're exploring some expansion plans that are still being ironed out. I really can't go into more detail than that right now because a lot of this intertwines with some announcements they've yet to make on the official site.
As for those of you I spoke with at Octurbofest or anyone that would be interested in helping us with the MGC, we really do need your help! We need folks to help plan, help set up, tear down, run tournaments... Basically, we have a lot of opportunities and we have a lot of perks lined up for those that do help such as after-parties and the like. So again, please take a few minutes and contact us like Mati suggested above.
Contrary to what some believe, I was not one of the original organizers of the MGC. I got involved after going to the show in 2001, and honestly, it has been one of the most rewarding, exciting, and often times entertaining things I've had the chance to do since that first show. And really, it is often times folks like Mati, Josh, Matt L., Jeff, and Byron from these boards that really make the show such a big success each year. I has been a privilege to work alongside all of them. :)

These really are the best group of guys one could hope to work with. Those feeling apprehensive shouldn't as there isn't a better team around. :)

yes that was me you met at octurbofest.
'stupidly sold out' is a bummer. If a table or two can be arranged (via top secret arrangements), please let me know- im down for anything. Im going either way, but I would prefer to have a table (and hopefully a wee bit-o-power).

If I can interject an opinion (Or pitch in moneys): no Bud, Miller Lite, Bud Lite, blah blah- random american lager crap. If it HAS to be a keg of what's available My request would be Coors Light or Rolling Rock. Otherwise, I need to pick up some tasty stouts or porters. :D

Oh c'mon man, Coors Light is just as much garbage beer as Miller (and it's the same company!) :)
I was thinking we'd go 2 pony kegs of a nice micro - maybe one IPA-ish type beer and one lighter one for the pansies.
Also - I'd like to organize a group to go to the Lakefront Brewery Tour in Milwaukee if anyone is interested. It's right downtown - only costs $10 i believe but that gets you 5 beer tastings, a free beer at a bunch of restaurants downtown and a free pint glass. I've been on all of the tours in the area and it's the best mix of sampling and knowledge - plus they have the original Bernie Brewer Chalet on site and the Pabst brewery line that was in the intro to Laverne & Shirley. If there's time we can catch a cab over to the Milwaukee Brewing Company in Walker's Point, which is another good (and cheap!) tour.
And to JD's point about signing up to help - this really is a great group to work with. It is a lot of work - don't think it's not - but it's super-rewarding and really immerses you in all the show has to offer. Help us out!
I second Jeff's statements, minus the beer thing.
MGC is loads of fun, regardless of what you do.

Ahem...we also have the Great Lakes Distillery downtown - their tour is about $15 and you get 9 shots (full shots!) of sample. It's a quick way to end your afternoon :)

You thinking a Friday thing? I can arrive early if need be.
1 Keg or two ponys, as long as it's beer. Make sure we get something that can be drunk all weekend, some of those "thick" brews can't be mass consumed. Fat Tire, Dos Equis or Newcastle are some ideas...of course anything local is tops with me.
now let's see if we can keep this weekend about gaming, instead of drinking
that said, i'm actually fine with whatever, keg, liquor, tour of any kind.
one idea though, why not have people bring some local brews for everyone to try?
Few notes...
First, we're cross-promoting the Midwest Gaming Classic with the Distant Worlds Final Fantasy concert set for February 14th at the Milwaukee Theater. You can get 10% off your Distant Worlds tickets by following this link and entering "MGC" as your promo key:
https://oss.ticketmaster.com/html/go.htmI?l=EN&t=wsctr&o=1685420&g=163
We'll have a booth at the show, so please stop on by and say hi! We'll have some games set up at the booth I imagine... Heh, maybe we can sneak in a TG16 or something? ;)
Second, I placed a rather large FAQ up on the Retroids forums you guys may find interesting:
http://retroids.com/site/showthread.php/329695-Midwest-Gaming-Classic-2013?p=508593&viewfull=1#post508593
I cover a little bit of everything on there and plan to update it some more in the future.
Finally, beer... We're likely going to have an after-party in the museum area Saturday night. I was thinking it could be fun to set up a table with some examples of the local breweries around where we live, though we have a few rules. First and foremost, since this is in the museum and there are likely going to be some kids joining their parents, we need to watch the table and ensure kids under 21 aren't drinking. Also, nobody can get so wasted that you could cause any damage (or trouble, for that matter) in the museum around all the classic consoles and the folks there. Drink responsibly, as they say.
Last point is necessary since it is the show rule on after-parties... To get into the party, you have to be involved with the show. That means you either need to bring consoles and games for the show use, TV's (which we can always use, btw!), run a tournament, help set up or tear down... that sort of thing. I really can't make exceptions on this because the whole gist for these parties is to allow the folks that are running the show a chance to play and enjoy some of the games there. If you'd like to take in the party Saturday night and would be willing to provide some of the examples I outlined for getting in, let me know and we'll figure something out.

You know I want to be there to rep MAG but I'm not 100% ATM. There is a local anime con the same wknd that wants TO PAY for me to bring my babies (arcade cabs). We are still discussing price and if they do not have the budget or it's just a logistical nightmare I'll be up to MGC. That Spotted Cow an't gonna drink itself!

Granted Milwaukee probably isn't a hop skip and a jump away from where you're at, but I see you had about 8 cabs there... Keep in mind that the MGC does provide show cash for bringing arcade cabs that you can use in the vendor hall. If you had 10 cabinets, for example, you'd get 10 * $20 + $10 + $20 + $40 = $270. So yeah, we would PAY you to come to the MGC in essence and we've always got turbo goodies in the vendor hall...
On a side note, and don't get me wrong - I like what they/you have done with MAG - but I see so much empty space between cabinets and large walkways and think, yeah, we probably would have planed that space down to the final square inch, lol. Tricks this year include cramming 12 consoles into a 12' x 17' space. Think about that, and then look at those pictures you posted again... hehe. ;)

I have 13 I bring(15 if you count the head-to-head cabs as two for spatial logistics) and that is because 15 is the perfect fit for a 16" box truck. Truck rental and with gas it get's around $1200 of REAL money to Milwaukee and back. Not to count the lost work and the hours driving solo I incur. Plus, in my eye, MGC does not room for much more at the current location.
I also get a "feel" that japanese sitdown cabs running 90's Capcom/SNK fighters and bullet hell shmups is not the fit for MGC. Or is what I have experienced the last two years more to do with supply rather than con direction?

Yes, MAG has a lot of room to grow (they have a convention center now!). Cabs are all volunteered from attendees. There is about 6-7 guys that have a bunch, like me, that make up the majority of the cabs. With more ppl coming, more ppl want to donate. I met a dude this year that lives within an hour of the con that has 4 candy cabs he wants to bring. As for the large walkways, that is due to the fire marshal.
Why do I have the feeling you want this to become a pissing contest? ;)
As I replied to your PM prior to seeing this, my point was if you were thinking about coming to the MGC anyway and wanted to bring some cabs with, there were some rewards to consider. I know the other folks on the forums were interested in seeing you there with or without the cabs, so I was just trying to be nice and made the comment in case what the anime convention was offering you wasn't a huge factor. I was not insinuating I knew exactly where you live or that you consider lost time from work in factoring the decision. I'm not quite sure why that even figures into the conversation considering anyone that does a convention is either taking time off if they have a job or using PTO.
To your other rather poignant topics:
1.) Do I think that just about everyone that goes to the MGC and visits this forum would be interested in those games? Of course. Is everyone that goes to the MGC going to? Of course not. Yet there is still a sizable audience for that at the show else Galloping Ghost's collection wouldn't have been nearly as popular as it was including games like The Outfoxies and DoDonPachi Dai-ou-jou, vendors that specialize in imports wouldn't be some of the first to sign up each year for the show, nor would we have just announced the Nippon Import Group room with folks like this forum's own Matt Turner, Joshua Jaeger, Sean Corse of Famicom Dojo, and Carlson of Mad-Gear. I won't deny your feelings any more than I'd wrong you if you weren't a Chicago Cubs fan like me (hehe), but denying there isn't a large group for those games at the MGC isn't right either. Just like MAG, we don't have too much control over what comes in through the door. Some years like last year we were heavy on fighting games. A few years prior it seemed like everyone brought something TRON related. I really don't know what to expect, but the show has such a diverse crowd that typically there's something for just about everyone.
2.) Size of the show... OK, fair enough. Yeah, we basically are in the largest hotel space we can get in the area, and the one hotel that was larger than this just went bankrupt. Will the show expand over the next year or two. Hopefully. We're always exploring options, but we're also very careful since we've seen a lot of shows go belly up by expanding too quickly or having that one bad year. Remember, we had a tough time after the 2004 show, so kinda like Blizzard will ship the game when it is done, we'll move once we're sure the finances are in order. That said, we are expanding the show this year again. We've added another wing to the show, we've completed a several thousand dollar upgrade to our electrical system again with an eye on the future, and we're likely to have arcades and pins throughout the show floor this year, including the new wing.
3.) If you felt like I was taking too much of a swipe at your comments about MAG floor space in this MGC topic (hehe), I'm sorry, that actually wasn't the thrust of my comments. It was mostly to say "wow, look at all that space and here I'm trying my hardest to make every last square inch count." ;) If Dan gave me all that room I'd feel guilty at this point if I didn't plan it as much as I do now! As for the comments about cabs being volunteered, of course. No show I'm aware of owns the majority of the cabs or pins they put out. We're all fan-run aside from a few mega conventions out there with corporate backers.
Listen, again, my point here was to say that I could see you had some friends here that wanted you to come out to the show, and I just wanted you to know about some of the perks just in case you did decide to come out. You make it sound like either I or the MGC has wronged you in some way, and that was never my intention. Cool?

From my point of view having a MGC without Majors is like having pizza without cheese. He's been a permanent fixture at all the shows I have been to. Get your ass to Milwaukee in March, my friend. :)

This is a walk through of the entire Midwest Gaming Classic 2012, narrated by MGC co-organizer John Norman.
The Midwest Gaming Classic 2012 took place March 24 & 25 at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, WI. It featured several hundred playable games including more than 270 video arcade and pinball machines, a comprehensive playable video game museum, table top gaming, tournaments, and panels. Well over 5,000 visitors took in the event over its two-day span.

It looks like I'll be going to this show. Since I never planned on making it to MGC I never really looked into it much. Now that I've seen this video I'm really impressed!
Does anyone want me to bring anything? I'm not sure if I have anything you don't already have a million of but if you are looking for anything in particular I might have it. The only thing I know I'm bringing for sure is my Neo Geo Pocket and all the linkable games I have since I so rarely get to do the link thing with this system.

The only thing I know I'm bringing for sure is my Neo Geo Pocket and all the linkable games I have since I so rarely get to do the link thing with this system.
Pm'd you :)

You should bring Jboy with you ;)
I would love to, but its not very easy to get him to go places. I can't even get him to visit my house!

Other than getting the $ to the organizers sooner, so that they can pay for what they need to pay for, is there any benefit to preordering? My sister and I are planning to come, I just haven't gotten around to buying our tickets yet.

Beyond helping us grow the show this year, the main thing would be the discount. This year we are going to allow people to buy two-day passes at the door, but it would be at a higher rate than we are currently offering on the site as of today. We're also planning on some improvements to the ticket system if you're going to be with us Friday night so you spend less time waiting in line Saturday morning.
Later.
Got ya'. Since we live about 2 and a half hours away in Northwest Indiana, we are just going to head out early Saturday morning to get there at the beginning, then stay as late as we can and then drive back home late that night, so the 2-day passes won't help us. I'll go ahead and get our tickets now. I was just curious.
By the way, if anyone else lives in the Northwest Indiana or Chicago area is coming and needs a ride or wants to carpool to save some gas $, just PM me, and we can probably work something out.
There's also things like the Tom Taylor tour for pre-orders, but that is Friday.
Hope to see you Saturday, then!
Later.
I'll be there.
Most likely won't be able to make it. :(
Was thinking I could squeeze in a one day road trip to come see you guys, but now even that probably won't be happening. I hope we'll swing out to VGS in July or maybe another OcTurboFest again at GG. That was the Bee's Knees!!
Regardless, I plan on coming to MGC in 2014- So I might as well just start planning for that epic meetup!!
Won't be the same without you Josh! Do try to make it if you can, though I understand what you're going through is more than a handful!
Later.
Only two more weeks! I can't wait!
I hope that many of the forum folk can come.

Neccler, why exactly do you need the stick? JD says we are covered. I'll bring it if you need it. That's not a problem. I was just curious. :)
Oh didn't know we were covered. When I signed up to bring my MVS he asked if I had 2 sticks, I only have 1 so I thought we needed an extra
Fellas - if anyone has an extra guncon or 2, please bring 'em along in your suitcase. we have enough but we might need a backup.
Nectarsis - you have that Point Blank guncon 1 right?

I am pretty sure JD is an android programmed to organize video game conventions. If we do need an extra stick we'll open his maintenance port and root around with a two-by-four to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Meh, nothing to it... The AES starts in the Console Wars section Saturday with the two sticks that Jeff is providing for Sunset Riders while the MVS Nectarsis is providing will be in its spot on Saturday with his stick and Mati's stick; and then on Sunday the MVS will move out and the AES will take its place and use the stick from Nectarsis and the stick from Mati, while the sticks that Jeff will be providing will head over to Sunset Riders so we can do four players again.
I don't see what's so hard about that? ;)
Seriously, I do think we're covered, but never hurts to have a few backups as Jeff is asking for with Guncons...
Later.
I was just curious if anyone is gonna be showing off any homebrew stuffs at MGC? I'm sure if Arky's there, then Insanity, PP, & Atlantean will be shown off(maybe more?). Unless I missed something, I don't think we'll be there, atleast, I know I won't be, & I'm not sure that we have anything different enough to present there as far as Jungle Bros. or Dragon Arm goes, though, Mysterious Song is out, so maybe someone's peddling that there?

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 03/15/2013, 04:50 AMSo who all is going to this? It seems like about a half dozen of us.
I think it's actually more than a dozen. Last year we had Ash, Matti, Beemer, Nectarsis, Majors, Jeff, myself, Bartre, Mishran, Cdamm, Chop5, Chany, DragonMasterDan, and I think a few others. I think this year's will have EVEN MORE!!
Con conflicts, grrrr. I'll be there in spirit! Drink a few rounds of Spotted Cow for me. I know the hotel get's another keg just for me and Jeff that weekend, so he is gonna have to step up.
Pic's! ...of course.
Yesterday, I finally bought the tickets for my sister (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?action=profile;u=4751) and I for Saturday only. Since we're only 2-2 1/2 hours away, we're going to just leave early Saturday morning, stay all day, then come back late Saturday evening.
If anyone in the Chicago area wants to go but doesn't have a ride, then let me know, and maybe we can work out a carpool or something.
By the way, I can bring some stuff, if anyone would like.

Kind of up in the air yet which is not where I'd like it with a week to go, hehe. Let's just say we haven't announced any indie stuff for the show, but there is still a possibility that there will be some at the show.

Quickly... Already on the official site, but we're scheduled to have Pyramid Plunder and Mysterious Song in the DHG Room of the MGC this year. Both games will likely be on display both days, all day, though we may sneak some Insanity and Jungle Bros. in there.

I have no clue how to find any of you guys so PM me for my phone number or something, eh?
Just left the show. Absolutely TONs to see and do, but as usual, I could only stay for a few hours. Wish I had more time. I took some photos that I'll postwhen I get a chance. Some of the prices in the vendor hall were eye opening to say the least! $220 for a loose Bonks adventure for NES....wow...I have no clue what the market price of it, but it caught my attention!
There are some great deals here for sure, but some gouging douchebaggerey as expected.
yeah there are so wacked prices. I saw a TG16 cosole, no box or dust cover. Just loose with controller and hook ups for 90.00. Another guy had a system3.0 card for 250.
last year i scoped out what i wanted then waited till the end to negotiate to get the best deals
I went last year and didn't buy anything for the stuff I wanted, it was majorly overpriced. I rather buy it online and play 30% less than what local vendors at those "gaming conventions" sell their stuff at.

Bomberman was fun. Running it on two displays was a GREAT idea. I can't tell you how many Bomberman tournaments I've run and for some reson none of us ever thought of that.
Next year you should do Death Tank Zwei. It's only seven players but it...might actually be more fun than Bomberman SS. I'm not sure. It's really really fun.

That mall is called Brookfield Square Mall. Never heard of the Dawn of the Dead reference.
I have no clue why i know this but dawn of the dead was filmed in and around Pittsburgh PA. According to Wikipedia this was the mall used: monroeville mall.

Yeah, turboswinbz is right. If you get the ultimate edition Dawn of the Dead multi-dvd set, it has some commercials of the Monroeville Mall, which is talked about quite extensively in the features.

Between the less than ideal lighting and the huge crowds photography wasn't easy. Here is what I managed to pull off. Most of it isn't the Japanese 16-bit stuff people here, including me, are primarily interested in, but I've kind of...seen all that stuff. Its the computers and pins that were the most foreign to me. I've never once see a Macintosh XL or a Bally Astrocade before. (Note: Wizard of War on the Bally makes the 2600 seem like SUCH a piece of shit, I tell you). Its truly a privilege to be able to play with this kind of gear as much as you want without having to be the poor SOB that actually has to keep it up and working. :)

WTF is this thing?
Wow @ the prices (*_*)
If thats the same copy of Panorama Cotton I think it was then he also had the tea cup which is pretty significant. I don't know if its enough to quadruple the price, but I've never seen one. In general though that guy is a bit of a bagger with his prices, IMHO. His eBay prices are a million times worse, btw. $100 each for Ganbare Neo Poke-kun and Big Bang Pro Wrestling?
That Wizard of Oz pinball looks awesome, I have never seen that machine anywhere.
$50 for an open copy of CF2 is pretty funny. I guess Turbo fans must have quite a rep for being gullible idiots at this point.
The lighting has always been horrible at that convention. They need better lights or something. I could hardly see the games/price tags without looking up close.
Zeta your pics look terrific!
I'm super jealous that I didn't make it this year. Can't wait for 2014's!!

It had the Tea cup. That was at Mad Gear/Carlson's booth.
Zeta -> someone have a fancy camera? Pic's look awesome!
Looks like a blast, sorry I couldn't make it. The other arcade room, I want more info. Was it in place of having cabs in the hallway like past years or did MGC just get more cabs over all. More vid pic's, less pin please.
That Apple IIc without a case was pretty hilarious.
and, awww yeah, motherfucking Line of Contact.
Completely wiped out - I left MGC at about 8:30 after stuffing my car to the ceiling and trying to help out JD a bit. After that, had to pick up my dog, drop off all my shit at the apartment and head across the street to catch KMFDM at Shank Hall in Milwaukee. So now I'm hungover, deaf and have no voice, haha. Epic weekend for sure.
I was running the Light Gun room this year with help from Nectarsis and my buddy Chris from back home. Think we were a victim of our own success - room was swamped all weekend and we pretty much had to babysit it because douchebags were trying to swipe PS Move and Wii remotes. I know Mathius lost a 6-button Genny controller on day 1. Most people are trustworthy but there's always a few bad apples. Definitely would have liked to move around a bit more and enjoy the other rooms. Got to meet most of everyone that came but I missed out on Chop, Keranu and Zeta - hope you guys had fun!
The vendor hall was a little bit weak this year - the prices can get ridiculous but like someone said earlier - if you want until Sunday around 1-2pm or later you can get really good deals. It's all about packaging up a stack of games and haggling with the vendor (who is just trying to unload everything at that point). Carlson hooked me up as always with some good stuff.
Once I recover I'll post my pics - I know Bartre and I think BlueBMW got the elusive museum staff group shot that we always forget to take - definitely want to see that!
Great to see everyone - if anyone missed this show, you should definitely come to the Videogame Summit in Lombard, IL this summer - it's a much more low-key event where we just all hang out and game without having to actually be responsible for running a room. Vendor prices are a lot more friendly too. Also Octurbofest needs to happen again.
Quote from: PikachuWarrior on 03/24/2013, 01:07 PMThat mall is called Brookfield Square Mall. Never heard of the Dawn of the Dead reference.
Quote from: turboswimbz on 03/24/2013, 01:15 PMI have no clue why i know this but dawn of the dead was filmed in and around Pittsburgh PA. According to Wikipedia this was the mall used: monroeville mall.

Edit for link.
Quote from: TheClash603 on 03/24/2013, 02:28 PMYeah, turboswinbz is right. If you get the ultimate edition Dawn of the Dead multi-dvd set, it has some commercials of the Monroeville Mall, which is talked about quite extensively in the features.

Don't know why, but I dig the commercial above.
noobs :P
The Dawn of the Dead REMAKE was supposed to be "set" in Milwaukee (filmed in Toronto IIRC)....chops was making teh funny ;)
Got home about 11:30 last night, completely wiped out....I apologize to Mathius, Ash, Jeff, and JD that I couldn't stay longer, next year we have to plan this after part better LOL
Yeah I'm waiting for JD to resurface. He had the thousand yard stare Sunday night during tear down.
JD - if you're reading this, we all owe you a big thanks for bringing so much stuff to the show and making it all work like clockwork. Hope you get some much needed R&R.

Yes BIG props to JD, and all his hard work =D> =D> =D>
P.S. Just because some people posted some of the worst of the worst prices cherry picked, doesn't mean there weren't DAMN solid deals to be had ;)
Thanks for the pics, Zeta! I really wish I could have made it out this year.
looked like a blast! thanks all for sharing pics and vids.
Dang. Did anyone take photos of teh PP?
was just curious what the booth looked like or whatever it was running on!

Nectarsis, don't sweat it bud. JD was winding down by the time you left.
Zeta, those pics are amazing! Can I have your permission for the MGC to use them in advertising? It would be voluntary, of course. :)
JD, thanks for your hard work this year. I really don't know how you do all you do. Next year will be more streamlined I hope.
Arkhan, if I knew Zeta was taking pics I would have sent him over to your station. Your station looked sweet though. :)
To all those who couldn't make it... We missed you all and hope next year we will have a bigger turn out of PCFXers.
Maaaaan. Hopefully at least one person gets a picture or some video footage up. It'd suck to miss it.
It was tons of hard work setting up and tearing down all of our setup. I am glad that we all can work as a team. It was all worth it though. I am glad that i could be a part of the team.
MGC.
MASSIVE BALLS.
that about sums it up.
i got home at 7:30 this morning, didn't even unload my car, then i walked inside and passed out.
upon waking up, i had to drive to lincoln and back (~2 hours) to take my friend kellie home, and i'm just now getting around to testing/unpacking.

that said, i've always liked the hat i was wearing; got it for preordering persona 3 portable, was surprised to find that it's a nice hat.

"Wheel of Fortune" and "Wizard of Oz" pinball machines... did not know that...
If there's a Tales of the Arabian Nights pinball machine, I'll just play that the whole time.
Did y'all notice the Nintendo Age room?
Maybe for next year, we should have a Pcenginefx room!
Thanks for the pictures Zeta. I didn't know the extent of the old gaming machines; it's an additional incentive for me to get my ass down there.

great pic dudes :)
Jess and I had a great time. It was good seeing all of you again. Being my first year, this was def a bit overwelming. Grabbed a couple items got my my PS3 and Jess got her son a few items for his 360. I was disappointed at the TG16 selection and the prices but I managed to get a few cheap cases.
I thought the Oz pinball machine was very impressive. Jess is a Oz freak and I admit it crossed my mind to buy/order one. The therapy sessions I would need afterwards was def a turn off! Adams Family pinball was there and that always makes my day. Just one of my favorites to play.
Cant wait till next year.

I'll zip up the lot of them and PM you a download link. You can do whatever you want with the stuff.
The terrible lighting was actually what made some of those pics so cool. If the 80s room was lit by more than CRTs and a laser show things would have been really boring. Sadly the light was too low even for a f1.8 for some shots so they turned out quite blurry.

Yeah I saw that photo and forgot that I was holding up my badge. I was pretty well "hydrated" at that point with all of the beer selection (thanks to Bartre for bringing the Nebraska brews)! Still recovering from the weekend actually, but man it was fun.
My buddy Chris (on the far right in the photo) actually just joined the forums, he's floating around here somewhere.

yeah, i actually had a bit of a conversation with one of the hyperkin guys.
i will say that i was impressed by the controller, it was a hell of a lot more comfortable and usable than it looked.
it looks like this one will be worth picking up, they had it running Street Fighter Alpha 2, which i know has been one of those "problem" games for clones in the past, thanks to the SDD-1 chip on the inside.
aside from that, i did find one bit of our conversation very interesting.
according to him, the finished product will be able to transfer save files between real carts and emulators via SD and USB.
knowing what i do, i'll probably pick one up when they drop, i might even do a bit of a review for the nice folks around here.

RetroN 5 they had there was an early prototype, but yeah, like Jeff said they wanted to show off some of the problem games for past after-market consoles so Street Fighter Alpha 2 was on display all show long. The guys at Hyperkin were even kind enough to let me win both of my matches I played, heh. Emulation was basically perfect, and they had an SDTV and HDTV side-by-side so people could see that the picture was pretty good between the two sets.
Overall it was a pretty interesting console. I'll probably have to pick up one!
On another note, if you guys are interested in doing a PC Engine FX room, let me know and I"ll see if we can make that happen.
Later.
Ark, there is your PP station above. It's the fifth photo down. We got one! <<<hits alarm>>>
And fear not Arkhan, I switched that TV to 4:3 mode before too many peeps had to play on that awful stretched out mess :)

Quote from: bartre on 03/26/2013, 07:05 PMyeah, i actually had a bit of a conversation with one of the hyperkin guys.
i will say that i was impressed by the controller, it was a hell of a lot more comfortable and usable than it looked.
it looks like this one will be worth picking up, they had it running Street Fighter Alpha 2, which i know has been one of those "problem" games for clones in the past, thanks to the SDD-1 chip on the inside.
aside from that, i did find one bit of our conversation very interesting.
according to him, the finished product will be able to transfer save files between real carts and emulators via SD and USB.
knowing what i do, i'll probably pick one up when they drop, i might even do a bit of a review for the nice folks around here.
Thanks, guys!

I would be pretty interested in this, assuming others were as well. (I wouldn't want to be 'tied down' to one room for the whole convention.) How expensive was it to reserve a room this year?

What we really need is an open space with areas, that'd be kind of the holy grail for MGC, IMHO. The room thing gets way too cramped/crowded. When those things are busy you can barely walk.
Yay!
How did people react to it?
and thankfully it got turned to non-derp mode. Stretchy mode = no.

What you really need are chairs. :)
Chairs are over-rated. ;)
Pyramid Plunder got some play, though I wouldn't say very many extended plays. Overall it did get a good amount of attention, and I did have more than a few people ask me about it along with Mysterious Song.
Big *if* here, but again, *if* you guys were interested in doing your own room for the site next year, I think the indie games would be a big hit in such a room. They did well enough in DHG that I'd certainly like to try it again next year.

DAMN! I am quite intrigued by the Retron 5! (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/hany_in_the_sky.png) The ability to use ANY old-skool controller with ANY game is quite enticing, to me.

The room was right across from the Nintendo Age room. I must say though, that the two rooms were the hardest rooms to find in the whole show.
Oh yeah, that's another thing, programs. The show needs programs.
I suppose it saves a lot of paper to have them online, but the online version...could be better, IMHO.

Two rooms down from your import room, Mati. ;) They were a little difficult to find since there was a small gap between the rooms, but I asked Hyperkin about it and they were happy with it. The room seemed busy most times I walked by to check up on things.
Programs are something we tried before and yeah, it was incredibly pricey and made a huge mess of things that we had to clean up. I think we'd consider a guide again if we could get some sponsors, but as it stands today, our main focus is on more space without breaking the piggy bank...

An accurate program online (simple page/table of information) would be the best of all worlds...of course, you need to find someone who is willing to maintain the page...
Then, simply advertising the online program (virtual info booth) with a few posters/word of mouth might be nice.
ANYWAY, MGC looks like a blast and is probably the only time I think there is life outside of East Coast :pcgs:

I went because it was really easy for me. A lot of the guys there live really close, or what I consider to be really close. The guy I went with visited his grandma that weekend because she was 10 minutes from the hotel.
You want to go pretty bad, more than I wanted to go. I suggest you make it a priority to go. It will be harder for you, but you want it more so JUST FUCKING GO next year, dammit. Make it happen.

Just make a downloadable printable PDF. You don't have to pay to get it printed. Most people won't actually print it themselves either, they'll just read it off their phone.
I went to the website to look at the program and there really wasn't one. There was a section that looks like this:
That's a lot of boxes to click or not click. I just said, "Fuck it, I'll just wander around and find what I want. The place isn't that big." And it worked, it was fine, but I did miss things going on because random wandering doesn't find everything."
BTW, seriously, what is the deal with the podcasting!? I mean...a hallway full of loud drunk dumb-asses grouped around a mic blocking the fire exit...does that actually produce anything even remotely listenable? I guess there are all kinds of podcasts out there and I've never taken a look at the "dork orgy" genre before. It was all very new to me.

Depends which ones you're talking about - the ones in our hallway (games and beer or something?) were pissing me off because they were clogging the walking space and seemed to serve no real purpose other than to "zOMG GET DRUNK" and leave a mess (pretty sure that Chris and I out-drank them both days anyway).
The Retroids guys downstairs (Gamers Only Older, Amplified Gamers, PS Nation, etc) are actually pretty good and are worthy of the space they get.

^ THIS is awesome!! We need to do that. I'd print some.
If you just click on "Saturday" you get 19 pages (!) of stuff. An effectively designed traditional program could do the whole show in 4-8 with maps.

Yeah, those would be the guys I'm complaining about. I personally don't get how or why a group would generate podcasts from a show like this in general though, not at this SCALE I mean. Its not like it was a giant SXSW/Cannes/E3 press junket or something. Nearly everyone there is just...dudes. Not worthy of generating 400 hours of podcasts. If Slate or Marc Marron were there they'd each produce a 90 minute episode...and their shit is actually listable. :)
