So following on from "What are your top 5 shoot 'em up games for the TG-16/PC Engine"
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=16970.0 (https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=16970.0)
Here's a new one, what are your top 5 platform games for the TG-16/PC Engine?
Mine are:
1. Akumajou Dracula X - Chi No Rondo
2. Jackie Chan
3. Kato Chan & Ken Chan
4. Adventure Island / Dragon's Curse
5. Legend Of Hero Tonma
I found this list harder to choose than the top 5 shoot 'em ups. With the shooters I knew straight away what games I wanted to pick, I had to think a bit more with the platformers.
Here's a few honourable mentions:
Ninja Spirit
Takahashi Meijin No Shinboukenjima / New Adventure Island
Jigoku Meguri
Mizubaku Daibouken
Son Son II
(based on my person experience and off the top of my head)
Legendary Axe
Ninja Spirit
Dracula X
Bonk
Cadash
I'd like to play Fiend Hunter again to get an updated opinion but I can't make it thought the intro anymore! New Adventure Island looks super nice, but it's not enough game play for me to put it on a top 5.
Quote from: majors on 08/08/2014, 04:48 PMNew Adventure Island looks super nice, but it's not enough game play for me to put it on a top 5.
Thought this was an excellent game, I was considering it for my number 5 spot.
Bonk's Revenge
Bonk's Adventure
Fausette Amour
Ninja Spirit
Drac X
Based on limited games I've played
1) Bonk's Revenge
2) Bonk's Adventure
3) Ninja Spirit
4) Legendary Axe
Just picked up Dracula-X and it's quickly climbing that list. There was a loose Jackie Chan hucard in the bundle I bought. Haven't yet given that any attention .. but based Otaku might need to find some time in my busy gaming schedule to put some time into it.
Never played Adventure Island .. will have to pick that off the Everdrive I guess for now.
Drac
Bonk 1
Valis 2
Ninja gaiden
Bonk 2
Drac x
Legendary Axe
Bonk 2
Wonder Boy 3
Bonk
Don't really have any JP games so my picks are pretty much English...
Bonk's Revenge
Splatterhouse
Legendary Axe II
Cadash
Ninja Spirit
In no Order
Jackie Chan
Legendary Axe II
Ninja Spirit
Kato and Ken
Drac X
Honorable mention to Adventure Island
Impossimole
Darkwing Duck
Talespin.....
OK, seriously:
Drac X
Ninja Spirit
Legendary Axe
Bonk's Revenge
New Adventure Island
Notes: Havent played much Wonder Boy stuff (yet). Honorable mention for Shubibinman 3 which I have been playing lately and Ninja Gaiden (which is better than the NES version except for the music)
Quote from: schweaty on 08/09/2014, 10:17 AM....and Ninja Gaiden (which is better than the NES version except for the music)
Enemy respawns are also more of a bitch in the PCE version.
The best has already been posted by everyone else, but I think Bonk's Revenge deserves the top spot. Did anyone post Shockman yet? I enjoyed playing through that one.
Dracula X,
Bonk's Revenge,
Jackie Chan,
Legendary Axe,
Dragon's Curse
Bonk's Revenge
Legendary Axe 2
Jackie Chan Action Kung Fu
Ninja Spirit
New Adventure Island

Ninja Spirit

I personally list it as a scrolling beat em up. Otherwise it would had made my list. Splatterhouse is my favourite Turbo game of all time.
Here's my top 5
1. Dracula X
2. Bonk's Adventure
3. Legendary Axe 2
4. Bonk's Revenge
5. New Adventure Island
I can't believe I forgot about Daimakaimura / Ghouls 'n Ghosts on the SuperGrafx, it's a truly excellent platformer and would be in my top 5.
1. Dracula X
2. Bonk's Adventure
3. Valis IV
4. Valis Phantasm Soldier
5. Valis III
1. Drac X
2. Cadash
3. Shubbibinman 3
4. Exile II (Its platforming... sorta)
5. Shockman

this is how i feel about cadash too. not really a platformer, more of a side scrolling beat'em up with rpg elements.

I always felt that Cadash is a "Action RPG".
Heck, I don't know:
* Keith Courage
* Bonk's Adventure
* Prince of Persia
* Dragon's Curse
* Ys 3
ENERGY
I can't answer this because I'm too wrapped up in what constitutes a platformer, but I will say Bravoman doesn't get enough love. It's a pretty awesome game, just a few dozen levels too long.
EDIT: Serious question. Does Parasol Stars count as a platformer?
Yes Bravoman is a cool platformer. Other games that I think they should be more well regarded by fellow obeyers:
-J.J. and Jeff: Cool adventure island esque game. The only failure, in my eyes, is that guy with sunglasses as a character (Jeff?). Also known as permanent ice level, he is 3x more slippery and jumps a quarter of what the other protagonist can in terms of height. So, only choose him if you're want a 10x harder game on purpose.
-Monster Lair: Auto side-scroller but still platformer? It is a simplistic game and an early CD game, I guess that's why people don't pay much attention to it, but it is a very fun game, and to add on top of that, it has pretty visuals and a nice redbook audio rendition of the original Wonder Boy III bgm. It is a little too long though. Play it at least once!

I won't judge you at all because I also have some weird game choices.

This is probably more accurate. How about "Side-Scroll Action RPG"? Is that a thing? Did we just make a thing?

that makes more sense. I'll have to get back to this thread with another pick at a later time

As will I apparently.
Quote from: Sadler on 08/12/2014, 06:27 PMEDIT: Serious question. Does Parasol Stars count as a platformer?
I've heard this genre called "Clean'em Up" before. I think its a fairly accurate description for this sort of game.
Hmm... well, two are obvious.
1. Dracula X - By far the best platformer on the system.
On the list - Bonk's Adventure - A good fun platformer.
Beyond that though, I'm not sure. The TG16/CD doesn't have the wealth of platformers that the SNES and Genesis do -- there are fewer on the system, and the ones it does have are much more likely to be more dated, '80s-esque designs. I love platformers, so this is one of the bigger problems I have with the TG16 and CD -- I wish it, the CD system particularly, had more platformers! And of what it has... sorry, but I find the Valis games way too annoying to put on any kind of "good games" list, and I've never been a fan of Prince of Persia and the like (Fiend Hunter is a lot like PoP, of course). There's just not much else on the CD; the best other CD platformers I can think of are Jim Power, Monster Lair (if you count it as a platformer and not a shmup), and maybe Fausette Amour, though that one's kind of average. Of course Bonk 3 CD is good as well. There are some good side-scrolling action-RPGs (yeah, it is a category), though, if you include those -- Dynastic Hero, Blood Gear, and Exile are pretty good. But that really is a separate category.
As for HuCards, after Bonk's Adventure, what are other HuCard platformers I like... well, Shockman for sure is pretty good. I also like the first one, Shubininman 1. JJ & Jeff is actually decently good too, and Jackie Chan. Bonk's Revenge and Son Son II are good games as well. Liquid Kids looks pretty cool too, but I need to play it more. Also, yeah, it's not great and would not be in any top 5, but I do kind of like Energy -- it has that classic PC platformer style, a lot like the Western PC platformers I grew up with in the early '90s (since I had a computer before any consoles). Oh, and Dragon's Curse is good for sure, if you include action-RPGs. And... hmm, is Bikkuriman World a side-scrolling action-RPG, or an action-platformer? It is the first Monster World game, but it has a much simpler and more straightforward style than its sequels... I guess I'd call it an action-RPG, but it's closer than the sequels for sure. And the game is definitely good; I like the Monster World series a lot, despite not particularly enjoying either the original Wonder Boy or its Adventure Island spinoff series. And yeah, as the list below shows, I really like Monster Lair, while disliking most Adventure Island games... they are kind of similar, but just different enough for me to have very different reactions to them.
So uh, a list... I won't include side-scrolling action-RPGs, because those really are a separate thing, even if there is a lot of overlap.
1. Dracula X
2. Bonk's Adventure
3. Shockman
4. Monster Lair (though it's probably more shmup than platformer)
5. Son Son II
... I don't know, ask me again and I'd probably make a different list, but that one's okay for the moment I guess.
Has anyone mentioned Chiki Chiki Boys or Conan yet? I don't know if I'd place either in my top five, but they're definitely good ones.
1. Bonks Revenge
2. Drac X
3. Bonks Adventure
4. Leg Axe
5. Leg Axe 2
Edit: I had Splatterhouse in there but it seems the gen concensus is that its not a platformer. To me it is.

I always thought that Parasol Stars was a action puzzler.
Somebody needs to make a game style dictionary lol.
Quote from: Sadler on 08/12/2014, 06:27 PMSerious question. Does Parasol Stars count as a platformer?
That's a hard one I'm not sure if you'd class Parasol Stars as a platformer but you made me realise I can't believe I forgot Rainbow Islands, I have to adjust my top 5.
1. Akumajou Dracula X - Chi No Rondo
2. Jackie Chan
3. Kato Chan & Ken Chan
4. Rainbow Islands
5. Daimakaimura / Ghouls 'n Ghosts
From those I played myself, I vote for these games:
1. Castlevania (obviously)
2. Valis 1 (played until the final boss, then died too many times. Still a fun game with good music and decent graphics)
3. Bonk 1 (played until the first boss, then had to take a break. Need to play more)
4. Bonk 2 (Only played the first level so far, but it was fun. Might switch places with Bonk 1 once I get to play it more)
5. Valis 4 (I like all those characters)
Other platform games I'd like to give a try are Momotaro Katsugeki, Jackie Chan and Adventure Island.
hmm. i didnt get to play all of the TG16/cd games but so far.
1-Castlevania - rondo of blood
2-Bonk's revenge
3-Legendary axe
4-Splaterhouse
5-Valis 3
Quote from: geise on 08/12/2014, 02:00 PM1. Dracula X

I'll give you Valis III, SINCE IT IS WORTHY. :pcgs:

Don't even mention Jim Power unless you are talking about the soundtrack (repetitive, but I like it). :pcgs:
I get crazy, too, when I think about how few platformers are on PCE vs. Other consoles...it is crazy.
I am surprised that a bunch of people have mentioned Shockman....is it because the PCE library is starved for platformers, or because it actually is a decent game (I just haven't gotten into Shockman).
What!? Nobody mentioned Tiger Road?
