Title: Favorite chip tunes for out-of-game listening
Post by: spenoza on 10/11/2014, 01:55 PM
This is part 1 of a chip tunes inquiry.

I am curious to know which chip tunes you guys most enjoy for general listening, outside of the game. The chip tune does not have to be appropriate where it is in the game. It just has to be something you like listening to without the backdrop of the game influencing you.

Soldier Blade and Magical Chase are two chip soundtracks that I really enjoy independent of the game. Especially the last level music of MC. While they certainly add to the quality of the game, they are fantastic in their own right and good listening. I don't need nostalgia from playing the game to enjoy those tunes.

I could go on and on, but I will limit myself to one game. (https://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)

I have to say that Dragon Spirit's chiptunes (not all of them are stellar, mind you. Some tunes are rather shrill on their own but complementary whilst playing).

Anyway...a few tracks from Dragon Spirit are the BEST out-of-game tunes to be found on the PCE, (IMHO) and really need to be listened to—surprise, surprise—outside of the game.

Why? Sadly, the sound effects for shooting and/or bombing (land targets) cancel out some of the the music channels whilst playing and it really, really, really is a shame.

I can find the names of the tracks I love...

UPDATE: folks, you can (1) download entire .rar or, if you'd rather not be bothered, just (2) listen to individual tracks in your browser...

Some favorite tracks of mine are:

10 Hyouga (normally I don't like upbeat tracks, but this one is fantastic, I love the segments with droning  background synths)

04 Kazan (wait until the sweeping synth soars in at 00:30, and it just build and builds, getting better and better)

08 Sabaku

13 Yamata

02 Kodai (classic, but I've "over-listened" to it)

Short and (bitter)sweet tracks—wish they were longer:
05 Hinotori
07 Hanakumo
09 Doukutsu
