Title: TG16 Cap Kit - Different then schematic? when to replace??
Post by: spawnshop on 09/08/2016, 10:30 PM
Hey gusy - looking for some advice on the TG16 cap kit from Console5.com.

So, I purchased a cap kit for the Turbografx 16 a few months back and finally had some time to sit down with them since i was doing a region mod on my system and had it open last night.
When looking through the parts, i noticed that the caps don't match the schematics shown here:  https://console5.com/wiki/TurboGrafx_16
Specifically, the Voltage values don't match up as shown.
Is it OK to use different voltage caps?
Should i even replace them if the system works fine?  Or should I just set them aside and wait til something goes?

Thanks!

As i was writing this, Luke from Console5.com wrote to me and gave me this link:

the increased voltage tolerances won't be a problem.  You can always go up in voltage (to an extent) with electrolytic caps.  More on the topic in the wiki:

Sound advice?

Yes.  The voltage rating is the max it can handle.  Higher is fine not lower

I wouldn't bother changing the Caps if it still works fine. I have yet to come across a u.s. turbo grafx with bad caps.

Yeah, leave the kit on the shelf until the thing actually fails. Then go get the caps from the shelf and throw those away because they will have failed too, then order another kit.

OK, thanks.
These things don't have a long life if not in use?    I'm not too familiar with them.   I did find this tho:  http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/archive/index.php/t-491454.html (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/archive/index.php/t-491454.html)

So TurboGrafx caps last longer than PC Engine and DUO caps?  Why is that?

the duo caps supposedly have the bad bootleg fluid in them

The Duos used shittier caps to be sure, but not those from the late 90s.

You are right.  It was out before that happened

I have also never come across a pc engine or Core grafx with bad caps. Just black PC Engine DUOs and US Turbo DUOs.

Thanks for the insight.
I think i'll skip the cap replacement for now.    "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" works for me.
