There has been a handful that bought some Duo-R's in the last couple of months. If you are the owner of a Duo-R, reply back with some details of your system:
* How long you have owned the system
* Where you obtained your Duo-R
* What do you think of the system
* Extra details - i.e. any mods or things you have done to it (including bleaching it sparkly white)
* Pics of your system
Here the details of mine:
* purchased 10/09/08
* Ebay seller - doujindance
* My favorite TG/PCE system - this system rocks!
* This Duo-R has an RGB mod, internal amp and a 8 din AV jack (that carries the RGB signal)
* pictures:

Couldn't be happier with the system! The RGB amp makes the signal look amazing! Going to get a Jrok 4.1 Component board for this soon.

I wasn't a R/RX-owner for long time since i disliked the style of those (not really but prefer the org. DUO over R/RX). but then i found one on july 16th for very cheap (3000yen lose but with pad and ac) so couldn't resist to buy it as a "further" spare system :)

No pics, but:
* How long you have owned the system (since August 2008)
* Where you obtained your Duo-R (eBay seller: hitjapan)
* What do you think of the system (it's great! i played a lot when i was a kid but never actually owned one I got this one.)
* Extra details - i.e. any mods or things you have done to it (none, but please tell me how you made yours so pearly white, my controller needs it BAD!)
Nice looking Duo-R's fellas!
I can tell my Duo-R was cleaned before it was sold to me, it looks good but underneath I can see a hint of the original "yellowing." I might do this to the system at some point:
wayback.superpcenginegrafx.net/cleaning_a_pcengine.html (https://web.archive.org/web/20100916042554if_/https://superpcenginegrafx.net/cleaning_a_pcengine.html) :D
That tutorial is for a PC Engine, but same principle would apply. I got more mods planned for the Duo-R....come u knew that was coming..... :-

Thanks for the link, but I don't think that will help with the yellowing.

And here is my Duo-R:
/duorig7.jpg
Got it April/May this year (don't know the exact date) from a japanese ebay-seller. It's an absolutely great system, i use it for the daily play. Actually it's unmodded, but soon it will have an RGB-Mod :)
I have the standard Duo-R myself. The system is still nice and pretty but the controller is a bit yellow. I have no intentions of modding it.
Own for 3-4 years.
Bought it broken from a casual internet acquaintance.
Its the coolest system I've ever owned.
I installed one of D-Lites region switcher PCBs. The LED is blue, which is cool because it matched the lettering.
/blue_duo.jpg
Sorry no pics thought it looks like duo_r's just a different bundle of games.
I have owned the Duo-R since July.
I bought it from Ebay seller Doujindance.
It is my favorite system as it actually works, something I cant say about my old Duo .
The extras it has is The RGB amp,8 Din Pin output, and unlike most I see on ebay it is Clean Bright Extra Fresh !
ahh another Doujindance. FYI - your Duo-R also has a built in RGB amp (RGB signals look yummy)! That would make a great candidate for the Jrok Component video board.
Zeta - I thought the lettering looks more purple. I am either going with Blue or purple LED.

I've had my Duo-R for a little over a year now. Bought from D-Lite for a tidy sum, but I've had nothing but fun with it and collecting for this system. It has a purple LED installed as well as a region switch and a S-video mod. The S-video output is just amazing on my 27" standard def TV, and it looks pretty decent on my 55" HDTV as well.

* My Duo-R came in the mail around 11AM today. (I got my American Duo in early October. Original Turbografx back in 1991.)
* Another doujindance purchase. We're making this guy rich!
* I think it's great! I got it even though I have an American Duo 1) so I can easily play Arcade card games, and 2) I'm a rabid collector of consoles.
* I haven't modded it yet, of course, but it has the trademark doujindance RGB amp treatment.
* I'll spare you all pics of my system because it looks just like every other Duo-R. :) I'm thinking about putting in a blue or purple LED, though...
Okay, here's why I really posted: I'm a huge noob when it comes to higher-def video signals. Up until I recently started getting into the Duo hardcore, I mostly just used composite cables on my consoles. So, to all the doujindance people: exactly what do I need to buy to get this thing hooked up all RGB-like? Is there some easy how-to for morons like myself? Preferably one with lots of pictures? Actually, if any of you guys have your Duos hooked up through the PSX SCART thing, can you take some pictures of how exactly it's hooked up?
Where can I get this PSX SCART cable to plug into the SCART box... and what's on the other side of it? RGB cables? A "monitor-like" parallel port-looking plug?
Help me out here, people. I'm hopelessly dumb with this stuff and I can't find a good all-in-one resource for how to get this going. [-o<
Thanks!
somery, welcome to the club. First - do you live in the US? 2nd - what type of TV are you hooking up to? Don't worry so much what other people are using, focus on how you intend to hookup to a TV. Does your TV have S-video or Component input? If so I highly suggest hopping on the Jrok 4.1 group buy. That will allow you to take that amped RGB signal, and convert that nicely to a component video connection - basically the best connection that you can have on most TV's.
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=5741.0
Got an RGB capable monitor? All u need is to hook that sucker up! First need details on the TV/monitor u are going to use.

Yup, I live in the US. Second question is a bit harder. The TV I'm using right now has composite and s-video inputs. I'm planning on buying either a newer, better TV or an RGB-capable monitor in the next month or so. Are RGB-capable monitors something I can find in thrift stores? That's where I find a lot of my stuff. I'm talking older CRTs and such. That's not my only option, but it would be nice. Which would you suggest: new TV or (large) RGB monitor? What's the general price range for such things?
Sorry, maybe this is the wrong thread for these types of questions. Thank you, though! :)
Hmmm, okay. I've peeked around eBay a bit and I think I'm gonna go with getting a new TV with component inputs. This way, I think I can just buy the PSX-to-component cable from eBay for about 5 bucks and use that on the TV. Sound good?
Somery - although component and RGB are almost the same thing, they are a little different. The component TV u are going to buy cannot accept a pure RGB signal. I have another post u should read up on. That is why I suggested the Component 4.1 Jrok board. It will allow ur component TV to accept the RGB signal.

Good information. Thanks!
I've got a doujindance RGB Duo-R as well. I've never used a Jrok board, but I use my Duo, PSX, Saturn, DC, SNES, X'Eye, and Master system all though an Atlona/CYM RGB to Component transcoder that you can pick up on ebay for about $60. You have to perform an audio mod on it, but it's really simple. It works great.
Anwyay, here is my beautiful system. I had an issue with the audio not working out of that PSX-scart adapter thing, so I added RCA jacks to the back of the system.
Duo-top.jpg
Duo-back.jpg
I also have my original unmodded Duo R system. I need to get around to selling it one of these days.
I have a couple unmodded R systems. Here's the specs:
DUO-RX
------------
* Bought it back in '05, acquired while I was in Okinawa
* My primary PCE system, it kicks ass.
* Sorry for no pics, but it looks like a DUO-RX
DUO-R
------------
* Bought it in '07, in Aomori, Japan
* It's a kick ass system, currently in storage.
* I picked up this system because I saw the price tag on it.. $12, CIB. I almost shit myself.
* Again, no pics. But it looks like a DUO-R.
* Oh.. and the controller is BROWN. The previous owner was a chain smoker, big time. System itself
is perfect.
That is all. 8)
Link up to that ebay seller for the transcoder please? Any screenshots of how she looks on the TV? Must look really nice.

There's a link to a closed auction. The picture doesn't seem to be working for me though. I don't see any open ones right now, but that same seller usually has half a dozen up at any given time. There are two types - one that says CYM (like in that auction) and one that says Atlona. They are the same box, but the Atlonas come with a US/Japan 120 volt AC adapter, and the CYM comes with a 220 euro adapter. It's easy enough to buy a generic universal adapter for the 220 ones though, I think it's 9 or 10 volts.

I took it a step further and put audio jacks on mine. It's a tad more difficult, but you don't have to worry about the cable coming loose.
I don't have a way of taking a decent screenshot. I've never been able to get a decent picture of the TV with my camera, but it looks great on a component CRT. The colors on the PC Engine aren't quite as good as some of the other systems, I think mine is amplified just a tad too much, but it still looks great and I'm not going to mess with it.
I've compared my Wii with component hookups playing Virtual Console games with the original systems using the converter in component. They look almost exactly the same, you have to really nitpick to find the differences. The exception, of course, is most TG16 games and the Wii's awful filter.
JKM - thanks for the info. However, I do know the RGB box does carry audio signal, maybe nothing happens to it (or isn't passed through to the PSX connector) but I do know it goes into the box. You can easily reconnect if it doesn't go all the way through. I will test mine some more. But if you have one of these, no nead to install RCA's on your Duo-R, u can pass it through the box, or even wire it to the Red / White RCA's on the box.
I use the Atlona Rgb scart converter and it works great, but if you want to avoid doing the audio mod and still have audio out from all systems use this:http://cgi.ebay.com/Pass-through-Scart-to-RCA-adaptor-with-S-VHS_W0QQitemZ200270336082QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item200270336082&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Pass-through-Scart-to-RCA-adaptor-with-S-VHS_W0QQitemZ200270336082QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item200270336082&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318).This will passthrough all 21 pins and allow for audio out.

Yeah, the little PSX box that came with mine was defective, and I couldn't seem to fix it. That's the reason for the audio jacks on the Duo. It was cheaper for me to install audio jacks than have a custom RGB cable made.
ogre: thanks for that link, I never knew such a thing existed.
I picked up my Duo-R at this year's Midwest Gaming Classic and i love it! Great system with tons of awesome games. :D
JKM - I cannot find any pics of the CYM or the Atlona boxes. can you take a snap of your setup. If I buy the CYM box can I just give it 9-10 volts (how much amperage does it need)? I dont' see the Atlona boxes. Also, is there a retail store that just sells these? I am really intersted in.
Also, I have a concern using the UK model in the US. Is there a difference in the YUV signal? Similar to problems with NTSC and PAL?

They are usually about $200 shipped, more or less. Check out www.risingstuff.com I believe they have one available! That's where I got mine. I also periodically see them on Ebay for 190 ish plus shipping.

If you click the link above to Neo-Geo.com, there is a picture of the box. The "atlona" one is exactly the same, but without the CYM painted on the side. Internally, they are identical. I just checked my AC adapter, and it's 7.5 vold, 500 mah. Finding a replacement cord would be easy.
There shouldn't be any problem with an overseas one other than voltage. I'm pretty sure the company that I bought mine from just imported them from either the UK or Australia and bundled a US power cord with it.
JKM,
ok I got my CYM box today (they mailed me the US adapter for it). So question - did you hack a Scart cable to use this box for Duo? Where could I obtain a SCART cable inexpensively to hack? I am actually thinking of adding a 9-din out on this sucker for all RGB system goodness....
Also are we just interested in RGB, Composite in (that Sync right), and the Video grounds? I already have the audio broken out prior to hitting the box.
Duo-R-
I'm still using that PSX adapter cable that came with the system. I need to replace it since mine is very flakey. All you would need to make one is a regular SCART cable, the correct DIN connector, and hook up the wires. I'm not exactly sure what to hook where, I forgot when the pinout is on our modded systems.
I emailed Chaoticjelly a while back and asked him if the RGB cables he makes for his own modded PCE's would work, and he said they should, he thinks the pinout is the same. I meant to order one from him but I never got around to emailing him back.
The pinout for the Doujindance Duo's was in my first post:
/180012328ouv7.jpg
JKM - do you know how to set the boxes from NTSC mode to PAL mode? I think mine is set to PAL right now. I have everything hooked up but jumpy picture (and yes I am using composite video with LM1881).

Duo_R Are you using Comp video out with a sync stripper (Lm1881n)to go into the atlona rgb scart to yuv box? The Scart to Component box should already have a built in sync stripper and should just take straight up composite video. As far as I know there is no Pal or NTSC mode for these boxes as I can play some PAL games with no problems on my NTSC tv.
Ogre - you are the man! That is the exact issue I had, I was first using sync vid, then a lm1881 composite vid. Straight composite vid did the trick. Now off to test some games!

Not at all- If I remember correctly it was around 200 shipped from Doujindance (sp?)- came with bomberman 94 and some random super CD game, hookups, controller, yada yada- I'd like a duo-r controller though as it came with a pc engine one

Unfortunatly not boxed  But I'll find a box down the road sometime.

Man I am late to this party, I've had my duo-r since like June or July, got it from electrohaze's big sell off of his tg-16/pce goodness. He cut me one hell of a deal too. $125 (or was it $135?) shipped for a duo-r official ac adapter, official av cables, one controller, a complete copy of that Conan game, and a loose huey of New Zealand Story all in great condition. I need to get around to rgb modding it, though I think I will opt to install a region switch in my tg-16 instead. I'll take some pics when I get home where I have my camera.

Thanks of coruse it wasn't cheap buying it cib, from toshi years ago.Still i think it was worth it since i all ways hear it's better to get a duo-r that way.
I've never posted on these boards before, but I've finally joined the flock. Bought me a RX on ebay.
* 4/17/2009 - Yes, last saturday.
* Ebay seller hitjapan.
* I don't know yet! It hasn't arrived in the mail.
* Completely stock.
* No pictures yet, as I havent received it yet. Hopefully some forthcoming.
I've been putting off buying a system for quite some time now. Dungeon Explorer is one of my favorite childhood memories, and I've wanted to try the CD version for some years now. I had some leftover tax money and decided to splurge. Much Dungeon Explorer II fun shall be had. :)
I couldn't resist posting  Neist, you will be happy.
* purchsed 12/17/08
* Ebay seller - hitjapan (awesome seller!)
* I cherish this thing. All of my other consoles are jealous
* No mods. Came clean as hell and got it with the box in nice condition. The controller still has the plastic protector over it.

Ah what the hell, I'll throw a pic of mine up here aswell, got this one from doujindance on ebay as a bundle with a tennokoe bank, avenue 3 pad, L-Dis and another game for $200 shipped if I remember correctly... :-k I have had it for about 3 months now, I have not played on it much but thats also due to the fact of having a 52 inch LCD and no CRT to play on. I dont mind the way the games look on it but I wish they looked better, which leads to the fact that all of doujins duo-r's are RGB modded, problem there is I dont really wanna spend the xtra cash on the transcoder and all that. Eventually it will all come together! Its a pretty unit tho and very very clean, also has a new laser.

New here and just read this post... Here's my Duo-RX with Arcade Card Duo... paid $400 us for it and it came boxed with 2 controllers, Duo Tap, and 49 games including Dracula X:
/P7040023.jpg
/P7040018.jpg
I don't have the original 6-button pad that came with the system, right now I'm just using a Duo Tap and 2 standard PC Engine controllers.
I hope to find a Duo-RX 6-button controller for sale somewhere, someday. [-o<
No pics (yet) but I recently acquired a Duo-R for $159+shipping from.....drum roll....Doujindance. It was boxed, with one controller and the RGB mod. The system is very clean, but the controller has some yellowing (must've been a lot of sweaty palms using it before). I absolutely love it so far and I'm in the process of finding more games for it.

* purchased some time in 2003
* Ebay seller - can't remember
* i have a core grafx, un modded
* This Duo has an RGB modded with a 8 din AV jack (that carries the RGB signal), shame i have used a crap cheapo ps1 cable cos i get wavy noisy lines, tyring to reshield it to improve picture quality, but the results are wicked apart from the wavy lines), blue led as well

Thanks! I got it off of Ebay and it set me back about $290, no box or paperwork. In retrospect I don't think the deal was that great, but the seller was here in North America, I got it pretty quick, and it wasn't heavily yellowed like ones most of the Japanese sellers have for sale.
And of course, a few days after I bought it I see a boxed Duo R, with all the original paperwork, etc. for $275 shipped, from Japan. :?
Ah well, at least I finally got one. :-"

That's dlite from the forums here. A lot of people have gotten work done from him over the years. I had a rough experience with him, but it got worked out in the end. I don't think he's doing much modding anymore, but he logs in to give modding tips and advice.
Thanks for the info.
Damn nice Sega Astro city cab dings. One day I hope to have a cab in my game room. Space wont allow it though
When you have the chance to get one - buy it :D
Honestly that was the best thing I've ever bought - I didn't regret it one second. I play every system I have on the Astro City (even my PSP 8) )
Here's my PC Engine Duo-R with some extra goodies I got with it:
/rgbmoddedpcengineduor.jpg
-Owned this PC Engine Duo-R for about one week
-Bought it off a local seller who put up an ad on Kijiji
-Sure beats the crap out of the HORRIBLY unreliable TurboGrafx CD. With this, I can play Gradius II and other Shoot-em-Ups that require the Super System Card without having to worry about a gear shattering on me
-I did not mod the system, but I found it with an 8-pin DIN instead of a 5-pin DIN on the Multi-A/V out, which can only mean it was RGB-modded. I don't know if the amplifier is there as I never opened my PC Engine Duo-R to check, but if I were to guess, I think there would be an amplifier for the RGB

Now that I've made aware of this thread by tatsujin, I thought I'd chime in here. Anyway, I just got a Duo-R a few days ago after selling my TG-CD setup (which now belongs to Dalder), and wow what a system! I've been playing it a lot since I got it and I think this will be the only PCE/TG-16 system I'll ever have next to my TurboExpress! I gave it a good cleaning too and it looks gorgeous. It's bone stock, but I plan on modding it for RGB as soon as I get one of those SCART to component converters. Here's a pic:

Quote from: Tatsujin on 09/21/2010, 01:25 AMNice Duo-R dude :)
Thanks, I was amazed at how good it looked after I cleaned it up in the sink (making sure to completely disassemble it beforehand of course). The Duo-R seems to be one of those systems that looks even better in person than it does in pictures.
The problem I have with the Duo-R/RX is that because they are made with that light colored plastic, many of them have yellowed. Those that haven't.... well, they will sooner or later. It's not really a case of "if," just a matter of time. There are all kinds of "tricks" to clean up yellowed systems, but it's a lot of work, and in most cases they just get yellow again even quicker.
I have a black US Duo and it's the best looking console I own. A black Duo with the caps replaced (as mine is) is virtually indestructible. Sure, the lasers will go eventually (as with ALL CD-ROM based systems, including the Duo-R), but that's a simple replacement. Plus I never, ever have to worry about yellowing.
For the technically un-savvy, a black Duo is probably more of a gamble than it's worth.... But for those with any kind of technical ability, I'd recommend a black US Duo with a cap replacement any day. And speaking of the black Duos: the JP version looks extremely goofy with those purple buttons. US all the way.
All that said, an un-yellowed Duo-R is a nice looking machine. Nice score Apollo.
I agree with you on everything but this:
Quote from: nat on 09/22/2010, 01:57 AMAnd speaking of the black Duos: the JP version looks extremely goofy with those purple buttons. US all the way.
I like the symbiosis of the purple and green elements, rather than the full blacky. Also on the JP one there is written PC Engine DUO which sounds and reads better than Turbo DUO. We do not talk about cars with a twin trubo engine, we talk about a PC Engine game machine.
Nevertheless, both are still looking uber great and are probably one of the best looking game machines ever created by our humanity and beyond of that.

My Duo isn't even slightly yellow. I'm not sure why. When it does go yellow, I'll just RetroBrite it. I did it with my PCE/CDROM2 system and as much as a pain as it was, it was a lot easier than replacing all the caps.
It wouldn't matter to me anyway. The Duo R/RX has always been my preference. The briefcase is the only system I like more. Its merely good luck that the Duo R/RX also the best value. I'd own one even if it were an overpriced unreliable piece of shit, as the US Duo has become.
I agree with nat - the US Duo all the way! The all black is super sexy.
I'm still trying to decide what to get as a secondary/back up system. I'm torn between the Supergrafx w/SuperCDROM2 or the DuoR/RX. I'll probably go with the SGX/SCD since I want a Supergrafx at some point anyway. I can't go without owning Ghouls 'n Ghosts on an NEC console.
If you're set on getting a secondary system, there's no reason not to shoot for a SuperGrafx, if you ask me. My "second" system is a SuperGrafx coupled to an IFU-30/CD-ROM^2.
Quote from: nat on 09/22/2010, 11:26 PMIf you're set on getting a secondary system, there's no reason not to shoot for a SuperGrafx, if you ask me. My "second" system is a SuperGrafx coupled to an IFU-30/CD-ROM^2.
haha. I like how you have "second" in quotes. I assume you put that in quotes because if/when I end up with that system it will immediately become my primary system.
Oh, not necessarily. Only to infer that neither system is really "second" to the other. I love each, and each has its perks... The Duo looks fucking slick, can play US carts, is super quiet, and faster seek times than the SuperGrafx+CD-ROM^2. The SuperGrafx has the wireless controller setup and can play SuperGrafx games, but no US carts. But that wireless controller is a big draw.... I know, I could technically use a wireless tap on the Duo as well but the wireless receiver sits on top of the SuperGrafx like it was designed for it.
Also, I'm pretty sure that the SuperGrafx has superior audio output, especially the PSG bass frequency range. I mean, there's a distinct audible difference between bass response on the SuperGrafx vs. Duo when comparing the same game.
At the end of the day though, the Duo gets more play than the SGX, primarily because region isn't an issue with it. I can't bring myself to physically modify the SuperGrafx....
That's really interesting that the SGX has better audio than the Duo. The wireless setup is also very awesome.
I don't blame you for not wanting to mod the SGX. It just doesn't seem right poking holes in her.
It seems like the shear hugeness of the SGX+IFU would also contribute to keeping it in the closest most of the time. It truly is absurdly large.
I am the proud owner of a PC Engine Duo-R. I have it modded to play any region Hu cards and it has purple/blue leds. It is AWESOME. I was gonna post pics but my camera is dead. I just wanted this to be my first post.

I just opened my Duo-R the other day, to evaluate if i could do the region switch myself, and to check the CD mechanism.
Interestingly, someone did an LED mod to it, i was unaware of the mod, i just thought that's how it was normally.
I really dislike LED mods when it comes to systems.
so, no more LED mod, back to the nice red access light
Mine's not modded or anything, but I have had it for about 8 years, and it became my primary system pretty quickly, since I rarely play U.S. hucards these days.
nothing too exciting about it other than the fact that I bought one in Japan in 2002, took it back to my hotel, and found that they'd given me the wrong adapter. I'd purchased a cheap-ish one, and it was yellowed and smelled of smoke - I took it back to the store and pointed out that the adapter was wrong. they checked it out, looked for a replacement, couldn't find one, called a manager, hemmed and hawed, and then decided I was right, and they gave me this shiny new white one instead. didn't smell of smoke at all! No extra charge, even though it should've cost 3,000 yen more.
Back when Japanese customer service was good, even for foreigners! Plus I was in Osaka, which helped...

I'm too busy to fix it
Here is my baby....
*I have owned it for about a year
*It has only a LED mod(I am hoping to region/S-Video mod this in the future-anyone want to help me out? )
*I obtained it from Keith Courage
*I don't remember what I paid. It was less than $200 I think
*This system is a crown jewel of my collection-It's not yellow but I may have someone bleach it someday

Love the LED mods some of you guys did with your Duo-R's. I'm jelly :D. Speaking of the Duo-R can anybody let me know if the Super Grafx uses the same ac adapter and Av cables as the PC Engine Duo-R? Thanks
