I never really knew more than the basics behind the NUON...

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/06/before-the-ps2-nuon-famously-tried-and-failed-to-combine-dvd-and-game-consoles/

I thought this was an enjoyable article to read.

Tell me if you spot any flaws.

and around a dozen software titles were out.

From what I recall there were the following games Ballstic (which was bundled with one of the players), Tempest, Freefall, Merlin Racing, Iron Soldier 3, Space Invaders and Next Tetris (more or less a demo disc that was a mail-away promo with one of the players) and then three DVDs that took advantage of extra features. There was one Korea only game as well.

If they're not counting the enchanced DVDs, that's 8 software titles, not quite "around a dozen".

Yes, that was a very silly exaggeration about the size of the library. I don't doubt that NUON, at some point in time, had tentative pledges from developers/studios for more titles, but these titles never materialized.

The fact that this article does not mention any software (outside of Tempest 3000) is odd, since I think most folks would be curious about the games (more so than the "enhanced" movies that the author lists).

Specifically, I WANT TO KNOW PRECISELY WHAT THE NUON-ENHANCED movie features were!

Also, no mention of the controllers used, or the features that may or may not have been included in the specs (was there a method for saving games in-progress?, for example).

Still, I enjoyed this article...I just wanted it to be longer, whereas Ars probably had a limit on length.

I am not ashamed to admit that I was captivated by RICHARD MILLER's DOME. Damn, what a distinctive impression he leaves.

I began to speculate if the creator of the fan site NUON-Dome.com was likewise enthralled by Sir Miller's melon.

Damn.

Without reading too much on here, I just kinda thought it was a woman going bald in the pic.

I  have Planet of the Apes which is Nuon enchanced. With my model Nuon the enchanced DVD features don't seem to actually work.

I have two controllers. One is a logitech which can be found rather cheaply, the other is literally made from the mold of a third party N64 pad and looks and feels exactly like a cheaper worse N64 controller.

I believe the Nuon had some internal battery or super cap that saves high scores.

I've tried Doom and a few others. It doesn't run that well.

Some platforms just don't deserve to be remembered in any way.

However, it was nice to learn that Bozo the clown developed the Jag and Nuon. This is sounds like a joke, but I guess its for real.

I'll shamefully admit that I bought into the NUON bandwagon back in 2001.  I was intrigued by the maverick spirit of the platform and I needed a DVD player anyway.

I owned the Samsung N2000 and later the silvery N501.

As for the NUON ENHANCED movies, well, let's just say that it wasn't all great.  You got something called 'viddies' which was sort of like a hyperlinked picture-in-picture feature.  And a couple of other foregettable enhancements that I really can't remember.

That said, the NUON processor did add some cool features to standard DVD playback like really great zoom effects, a strobe feature where  you could loop say a sequence over and over very smoothly, and it also featured a very smooth fast forward and rewind functionality that most DVD players of the time could not replicate.

Regarding games, there was no save feature for scores or positions as far as I can remember.  Iron Soldier III and Merlin Racing all used passwords to save progress.  Space Invaders and Ballistic did not save high scores either.  I think the intention was to release a save cartridge or unit at some point, but it never materialized.  Also, forget about playing Tempest 3000...it's just a horrible blurry mess that's too chaotic....I'm not exaggerating when I say that its like trying to play Tempest through some Vaseline screen filter (and its accompanied by all kinds of weird barnyard animal sound effects).

I know they discovered a few unreleased games at some point.  Bust A Move was one, which indicated that Taito had been on board until the inevitable implosion of VM Labs.

Wow.  It even includes IS3 and The Next Tetris.
Good luck on the auction!

LostFlunky

I had everything officially released at one point and a couple of the brownish coloured controllers.

I also had IS3.  It was about as powerful as n64. Merlin Racing was buggy as all hell and T3K was really hard to play.

Pretty much crap all around and I got rid of my stuff about a year after purchase.

Pretty much my sentinments and experience with the platform.
I did really enjoy Merlin Racing though...in terms of depth, that was probably the best of the launch titles.  In fact, Miracle Design even went on to release the game (on several discs -- one for each vehicle class) on the PS1 if memory serves me right.

I have the logitech controller sitting her collecting dust, I should offload it...

I also have t3k and merlin creeping around somewhere, need to find them.

Those controllers have certainly increased in value recently.
Back in 2002 after the NUON platform imploded and died off, there was an online store (dvdinternational I think?) that was selling controllers and games off for like $10 a piece.  I stocked up on several, but eventually ended up ebaying them a few years later.

Well, it's here if anyone is in need of it, my samsung player stopped reading discs, so I gave up on the whole mess, shame it was a novel idea, poor ass execution though.

If you need a replacement player, the winner of my auction didn't want to pay to ship the actual players and just wanted the games etc.
