10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I was about to pull the trigger on this as most of the graphical issues have been fixed in V2 boards and from what I have seen I am ok with. However, the audio buzz issue people are reporting would drive me crazy. While looking into this I stumbled upon this video (
) and it seems pretty loud and obnoxious. I bought a CoreGrafx II and plan to recap it for this, then run it through a pack-a-punch scart to my Framemeister. Not sure what this guys setup is but through the extensive reading Ive done on the subject lately, it seems the White PCE is more prone to this issue, and maybe those using HDRetro component cables causes issues. Also be sure to clean the pins and make sure they are not bent. Check your power supplies.

But is this really something that can be fixed through firmware?

Would love to see/hear more comparisons from the de-facto PCE community !

I ordered something from them 2 days ago. They shipped it out immediately. First time ordering from them. Wondering how it will go  8)

Hello,

I recently purchased a CoreGrafx II for this SSD3 attachment. It is my understanding that it outputs RGB, but does not fix the jailbar issues inherent in PCE consoles. Can someone confirm this is correct and maybe point me in the right direction (videos/faqs/advice) on how I can remedy this issue? Thanks!

Hello,

Question for you aficionados... which of the supported systems would be best for this? I was reading up about the different PCE it supports and it seems some have different revisions of the CPU. Would this at all affect how well they run with this addon?

Would I need any sort of existing mod in place?

How about color? I see this shell might be black in color. Would I be better off getting the CoreGFX II to match it ?

Which of the supported is the cheapest/most reliable?

I own a RX but collecting CD's for it is slow coming. Thanks!

NEC Console Resource / Hello World

Hi,

I recently just purchased from mikecris here on the forums a Duo RX. Now that it's on the way I finally felt like I could introduce myself!

My experience with the Turbografx / PC Engine consoles is next to nothing. I recall in school a kid who I met on the bus that lived in my neighborhood had one. I didn't even know there was a console other than a Nintendo or Sega at the time. He wasn't allowed to have people over often so I only saw it that one time at his house. He showed me Keith Courage and Fantasy Zone. What stood out to me at the time was the bright colors and quirky characters. That was the extent of my experience with the console, so it remains to this day a huge black hole in my gaming library experience. Looking back now I do remember seeing ads for the console in GamePro and other gaming related magazines but as a kid unless I saw it first hand I wouldn't really get it. I feel this is where NEC dropped the ball in terms of marketing the console. Should have had more kiosks or the like at Blockbusters, etc.

Anyhow, I have been absorbed in the retro game scene for awhile and keep coming across youtube videos like "game sack" or "my life in gaming" which hype up the PC Engine / TurboGrafx library. I wasn't aware it was as big in Japan as Sega was here in the states. Those quirky graphics are right up my alley as I love how Japanese themes and anime made up the catalog. After discovering there was actually a Zelda-like game called Neutopia on the system I had to pull the trigger and get one as that's one of my favorite type of games during that generation.

I am starting completely from zero on my library, so I am watching a bunch of top 10/20/50 lists to see what is affordable. I understand I could have played these titles with an emulator, but it really bothers me when as of late I ask a sales rep in some gaming store what retro games they have. They always try to sell me a Retron or some other nonsense. To them I say, "where's the romance in not playing it on the original hardware?". If I wanted to dump a cart I might as well play it on an emulator!

So I will be lurking these forums tapping your brains with my noob questions and discovering what this line of consoles has to offer! First of all though I need to actually get a game to play!
