10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I ordered mine last week.  Should be arriving on Monday or Tuesday.  I don't know why people are getting so worked up about a buzz during card access or some video noise.  I'm really pumped to get it.

I finally got a working PCE gamepad after having one with a faulty II button for a while (after taking it apart and cleaning it inside out).  I spent last night playing Gradius II, Rondo, and Bonanza Bros.  All fantastic games.

1000 games?  I think Retro Gamer said that's full of shovelware games because they couldn't get the licenses to the ones people actually want.  I can't imagine that thing is good to use without a keyboard.  And it only has composite if I remember correctly.

They are going to fix that capacitor right?  My PCE has (or will have) s-video installed, so I'd rather just use that if the hd retrovision cables will hurt it.  I love that we're finally seeing solid state replacements for CD consoles like this, the Saturn, and 3DO.  I just got my Rhea and love that, this seems just as good.

"Just download an emulator" is sounding better and better.  That much lag is crazy, I can't believe they released it like that.

Quote from: zetastrike on 04/21/2018, 02:25 PMA lot of the Mega Man romhacks (and MM9 and 10) that I've tried on the Everdrive really miss the mark in terms of design.  I can rip through any of MM1-8 in no time, but much of the new stuff and hacks rely too much on blindsiding you, or swarming you with enemies, or poor enemy placement, or spikes everywhere.  The original games were tough, but they're totally beatable and don't require much, if any trial and error.  Just reaching the boss room shouldn't be a grueling task.

It makes me kind of nervous for MM11 when it comes out.  I'm hoping the Inticreates people aren't the ones making it, because they don't really "get it" in my opinion.
Wasn't InitiCreates behind MM9? They did a bang up job with that game.  :)
They were.  I can see why a lot of people liked MM9, but it didn't really do anything for me.  It might just be that I'm older and don't have all the spare time to learn every new level.  I also really didn't like that made it look like a NES game rather than modern looking, and that they got rid of the slide and charge shot.

I'm holding out in hope of a full size model with a functional keyboard.  I know it's just an emulator, but I do like self contained systems that do nothing else but play games.  The reviews of the mini are kind of off-putting.  Among other things, I'd like to be able to use a real Competition Pro through a USB adapter.  I appreciate that they advocate loading your own roms, which is awfully nice of them.

Been spending a lot of time with the Turbo ED the past few days.  I've never played >95% of these games.  It's been great discovering them.

I love Gradius II on PCE.

It doesn't get a lot of love and hype, but it is a solid game. Quote worthy of the "Gradius" legacy.

You won't be disappointed with any of the (handful) of Konami PCE releases.

:)
It's really strange that Gradius II or the first one don't get hyped to the moon on the PCE.  They're really the only console ports that did the arcade justice until the Saturn was out.  I'm not complaining though.

I thought Big Run was the title of the Japanese version.  My bad!

I ended up buying a Turbo ED yesterday, so I'm just going to avoid the whole buying a ton of individual games then having them collect dust once I get an ED.  Now I'll just have to focus on CD games.

This board is great.  I don't have much to contribute yet, but it's great to read here.

I've been using these S-video cables with my PVM and it's great fwiw.  I didn't feel like jumping down the RGB rabbit hole yet.  It's a huge step up from composite and they aren't those cheapo retrobit cables that have s-video and composite.  They're handmade by some dude in poland.

I got the Everdrive N8 for my Famicom back in December.  I'd say it's totally worth it.  The last time I did a count, only about ~38 games were incompatible and none of them were anything I was interested in playing.  There's a list on krikkz's forum.  I was thrilled to be able to play Akumajou Densetsu with the extended audio.  It's great to play hacks on real hardware, especially all the Mega Man stuff that comes out.

It's too bad that the FC/NES is one of those systems that just rubs me the wrong way.  I don't know if it's because I didn't have one until I was 12 years old or that many of the genres were done much better in the following generation, but I have a really hard time getting into it.

I'm looking to get 2-3 more games for my Duo R before I move.  I did some research and I think the following games tend to go for <$50 on ebay.  I'm looking for CIB on all of them.

Columns
Outrun
Final Soldier
Neo Nectaris
Big Run
Road Spirits

If anyone in the US has any of these and can get them shipped to me within the next ~14 days, hit me up.  I don't think I'll be living at the same address a month from now.  I picked an awkward time to get a new console, that's for sure.

I got my Duo-R on Monday and it's done this weird thing two times.  When playing Gradius II, it hanged at a black screen for longer than it should have when it was supposed to be loading.  The first time was after the GAME OVER screen.  Instead of quickly loading back to the Konami splash screen, the screen went black for longer than usual.  It proceeded to work flawlessly after that for the next few days.  Just now, when I went to start a game, it hanged at a black screen before it loaded the first level.  And after that, all the music streamed without issue and all subsequent loading happened seamlessly.  The drive itself is actually really quiet, much quieter than my Saturn, 3DOs, or Sega CD.  I just found it a little alarming that it took a bit for the drive to start seeking and loading on just those two freak occasions.  I hope this isn't a sign of it dying.

There was a guy on Atariage who posted finding a TG-16 and several games at an estate sale for $40.  That's the kind of stuff that's post-worthy.  I'd feel like a doofus if I posted a "Hey look at the cool stuff I bought" that anyone who can use a computer could have acquired.

I used to use mednafen, but the drag and drop and lack of any built in GUI made me not use it very often.  I tried setting up an emulator for my PSP, but it needed too much tinkering to get games to work and some wouldn't run correctly no matter what I did.

Does anyone here have these particular cables?  Are they good to use?  I'm seeing a lot of search results here for bad aftermarket composite cables and want to find a better solution than using my model 1 Genesis cables.

Is using Genesis cables harmful to a Duo-R?

This guy is on the right path...anti-collectard.

I'm the worst on the knowing current prices, but Outrun should not be $50. I'm sure a FS: thread here will have a copy for less. Also, do not pass on Victory Run...it has some goodness inside once you figure out the driving mechanics.
I'm going to wait until I have a decent amount of posts before I attempt any of the FS threads.  Is Road Spirits any good?

To add to the anti collectard thing: I got my copy of Space Harrier in the mail today.  It was still sealed, I got it for less than $30 shipped.  I unwrapped it and promptly played and enjoyed it.  I like buying cheap sealed games for the heck of it.  I do it semi-often for Japanese Saturn and 3DO games when I find them.

Also: is using a Genesis 1 AV cable a bad idea?

I quit posting in haul threads on my other message boards a while ago.  I realized how silly it was to take pictures of my crap, upload them to imgur, and post them on a forum for others to see.  If I buy something, it's to enjoy it.  It's fine to share your experiences and opinions, but I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish by producing photographic evidence that I bought a Saturn.

Quote from: crazydean on 05/09/2017, 05:17 PMWelcome! Have you played any games besides those before?
I've had mednafen for about a year and spent some time with Outrun, Jackie Chan, Bonk 1, and Soldier Blade.  I also have the PSP Castlevania disc that has Dracula X on it, but I've been reluctant to get into that since I didn't want to ruin it if I ever got a real PCE.  Plan on getting an Everdrive sometime in the future, before I amass too many hucards.  I would have loved to get Outrun from the same ebay seller, but >$50 was too much after everything else I spent.

This was one of those cases where the emulator convinced me to get the real hardware.  The Atari 8 bit is the only other time that happened.

But yeah, I don't have too many consoles left on my bucket list now.  Maybe just the Colecovision or MSX or ST.

Hi PCEFX,

I'm a 25 year old oncology information system analyst.  The PCE has always been one of those consoles that I've always admired, but emulation never cut the mustard.  Last week, I found an auction from a US seller for a boxed Duo-R.  I got outbid by $5.  So the next morning I found a BIN listing from a US seller that was only a few dollars more than the winning bid from the previous night, so I finally took the plunge and got my first PCE.  I got it today and just spent an hour taking it for a spin.  I currently have one game, Gradius II, with Space Harrier on the way.  I'm loving it.  I figured now that I own one, it's as good a time as any to join this board.
