Happy New Year to everyone!  Play more Turbo in 2018!

Interesting difference of opinions in this thread.

One game that I don't really care for is Star Parodier.  It's a beautiful looking game but the cute style, being too easy and the voices are kind of irritating to me.  It seems most cute shooters are not my thing except maybe Fantasy Zone.

Quote from: Medic_wheat on 12/31/2017, 11:31 AMMagica Chase.

I played and own the PCE version.

It's an okay game. However I found it not very challenging and I SUCK at shooters.

So for my to say it felt easy I can only imagine what people who are vastly more capable at shooters must think.

Also it's short. And not oh I picked the easy version and the game stopped is way asking me to play again but oh it's over?

R-Type I&II felt more challangjng and meatier to game content. And it was one of the first few games to come out I believe.
I agree, I don't really care for MC.  I played through the PCE version probably about 15+ years ago.  From what I remember the challenge level seemed okay, but was kind of boring.  Probably just the cute style shooters don't really appeal to me.  I definitely prefer R-Type or just about any other spaceship shooter.

Quote from: The Old Rover on 12/31/2017, 11:03 AMThe Legendary Axe. People go on and on about how great it is but I did not play this back in the day so I'm not nostalgic about it. I did not play it until many years later, and immediately saw it for the terribly-flawed mediocre game it really is.
If the legendary axe is mediocre, then castlevania on nes is terrible.

I love the axe and knowing when to use it. The full power strike is incredible. CRACK!!!

I'm not big on military madness. If there was an enemy turn skip feature, those hardass later levels wouldn't be as frustrating and long.
...
I never played Legendary Axe until about a couple years ago and it ended up becoming one of my favorites.  I agree, the full power strike is really awesome and satisfying when it connects.

Military Madness is one of my all time favorites but I do agree there should have been an enemy turn skip option.  They probably didn't include it so the player won't miss any of the enemies movements/attacks to understand the overall enemy strategy.  I've just played through Neo Nectaris for the first time in the last few weeks and really enjoyed it.

Congratulations to TheClash603 on your 1,000th post 6 years ago.

Throughout the years at PCEFX I aspired to one day be able to post in this prestigious thread and not be an asshole.  That glorious day is today!

Just wanted to say this site has been pretty solid for the first 1,000 posts, hopefully it keeps getting better!

I wonder if anyone else will ever post here?

Back in the mid '90s Babbages had brand new SFII World Warrior snes on clearance for $1.99.  I remember the store had boxes of them on the floor underneath the bargain bin.  No one wanted them then and I don't think anyone really cares about World Warrior now.

All this retro/classic collector repro bs is really getting out of hand.
#5
I'm also in the East Bay.  Looks like you got a lot of interesting stuff.  Too bad I only have room for more PCE. :)  If I'm out your way I'll have to stop by.

Good luck with the sale.
#6
I'm a huge Street Fighter II fan, but no way I would buy this for any price.   $100 for snes SFII World Warrior repro is insane.  Definitely made specifically for collectards.

Bought the original snes SFII for $80 when released and played the shit out of it until CE/Turbo/SE versions were released.  I can't remember the last time I've played snes SFII World Warrior, but I've never had the urge to play it after better SFII versions/ports came out.

Rayxanber II is the more difficult one.  I been playing it on and off for a few years now with some progress.  A few months ago I had a lucky run through level 4 and got to level 6, but that's probably as far as I'll ever get with my meager shooter skills.
#8
My friends and I used to play Altered Beast and Golden Axe on the SMS for hours back when released.

Not recommended over the Genesis versions since they are definitely not as good and are watered down ports.  Being kids and having nothing else to play we got tons of enjoyment out of these two games.  Only able to play one player for either game and passing the controller around was kind of sad though.

...csgx1 is correct, that isn't a mold pattern.

IT COULD BE:

(1) aerial view of a "moon" depicting "faultlines" and craters...
(2) aerial view of earth depicting rivers and giant floating spores...
(3) painting entitled "Lilac #3"

Hmmmm....
All great possibilities.  I like #3 the best!  The lilac color is know to calm and relax, which is definitely needed when playing Heavy Unit.  :)

Interesting, is your spine sticker faded too?  Seems like all the ones I've seen for sale have faded spine stickers as well.  I wonder if that was also part of the art design or did they all just sit in a store window for years unsold.

Quote from: guest on 07/28/2017, 03:26 PMIs that that glossy paper?
Yes, it's glossy paper like most manuals.
#11
Fortunately I've never had any mold problems where I live, but I'm always concerned with receiving funky stuff from others.

I picked up Heavy Unit and was a bit surprised at what I saw when I opened the case...

Took me a moment to realize the white shit isn't mold, but just the printed artwork on the back cover.  Not exactly on topic, but WTF kind of art is that?

The SGX is one of my favorite systems, but I would not buy one now with the crazy prices the system and games are selling for.

Everdrive does work with the SGX if you don't already know.

Beat Rock On.  It's not as bad of a game as I initially thought.  Though the cave stage was quite annoying since I died a lot there.

Years ago I was buying all the loose consoles from my local thrift store and flea markets for cheap, $2-$5 each. At one point I had 5 Turbografx and easily had 5+ duplicates each of the common consoles.  Hard to resist buying consoles for a few bucks.

Finally realized I needed the space, so I ended up giving away or selling most of the multiples. Now I only keep one spare for each console with the exception of the Turbo/PCE.

As for games, I do have a few doubles of certain US and JP versions like Bonk's Revenge and PC Genjin 2 because of the slight differences.  Other than that, I don't see the need for backups or multiples of the same game.

Rick from Splatterhouse.  Swinging that wood!

Very interesting, I never heard of this.  I checked 3 Tennokoe Banks that I got and none have a empty slot 4.  Tried to swap/transfer a blank system memory to the Tennokoe but it doesn't allow it.  It doesn't seem like there's an easy way to clear the Tennokoe Bank saves without disconnecting the internal battery.
#18
The only game I've come across that seems broken is a Super Star Soldier PC Engine Hucard.  Totally dead and doesn't load anything.  I bought it complete in the case with sponge and everything is like new condition.  The Hucard itself looks brand new too, so I am really surprised it doesn't work.
#19
I stumbled on this game too, but in a dumb way.  Years ago I bought my Turbografx CD system that came with a bunch of stuff including a Super PC Engine Fan Deluxe magazine.  I quickly thumbed through it, I didn't think much of the magazine and it sat on the shelf.  About 10 years later during a move, I looked though it again and I realized for the first time that there were discs in the back of the magazine.  Basically Motteke Tamago was on my shelf for 10 years before I played it.

Definitely a fun multiplayer game.

Anyone still doing the challenge?  You guys are slippin'!

Well, I gained about 10lbs since the last challenge 3 months ago.  Time to get back on it.

I have a Arcade Duo that does the exact same.  I've never got it to work properly on any of my systems after trying every trick mentioned.   It seems that my card is slightly curved, so that might be a sign its been damaged.  I haven't messed with it in years since I also have a Arcade Pro.
#22
I definitely enjoy Battle Royal in short sessions, though it's far from the best.  Multiplayer is fun with friends.

My first 3 games I played was sometime around '90-'91 at a friends house.

Keith Courage
Bonk's Adventure
TV Sports Football

I'm still halfway through Tricky Kick when I started it last year.  Maybe in 2017 I'll stop playing better games, invest more time in Tricky Kick and finally finish it.
#25
I guess I'm the only one here that likes Fighting Street.  It's kind of fun when you master the special moves and can almost pull them off at will.

From my experience the feel of most NEC d-pads depends on wear or how used the controller is.  I have various NEC controllers and some of the d-pads feel different but most of them seem pretty worn.

My Ave 3 seems to be my most worn pad where the d-pad is not smooth, clunky and kind of sticks.  I have worn US Turbo and PCE pads that feel similar but not as bad as my Ave 3.  I've inspected and thoroughly cleaned these with no improvement.

In contrast, my cordless PCE and one of my white PCE non-turbo pads are really smooth and work great.  Most likely because the cordless pad was brand new and the non-turbo pad seems hardly used when I got them.  Both of these pads are what I always use now.

The Hori FC 6 button is good and the shape and feel is similar to the oem snes pad.  A nice d-pad but I only used it when playing fighting games.

If you are good at repairing stuff here's a broken one that's cheap...

I haven't bought anything US Turbo recently.  I'm content with whatever games I've acquired years ago.  I buy a few PCE games here and there through out a year, but I usually never spend more than $20 on a game.

Apparently people buy from PCEFX...
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=21740.0

Am I the only one that thinks those prices are high?  I assume ebay prices are even higher?  I'm surprised they sold so quickly, but I guess I'm expecting to see prices from 10 years ago and I'm not up to date with current prices.

It's a crazy time to start buying and collecting Turbo stuff now.

Duo_r did a 3 button switch mod to a Ave 6 pad not too long ago.  Seems like a great mod and I've been wanting to do it when I have time.  I would also be interested in doing a mod to the Hori fighting commander.

https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=19576.0

Also if you could utilize one of the extra 6B positions for switching modes/buttons or something, that would be quite nice and clean.
HoriGamepad.jpg

Quote from: guest on 12/13/2016, 01:25 PMThe Hori feels just like a genuine SNES gamepad. The only thing that gets me puzzled regularly are the missing shoulder buttons.
I agree, it feels just like a SNES pad which is why I kind of prefer the Ave 6 pad even though I think the Hori dpad is better.  Sometimes, out of habit, I press the blank shoulder area of the Hori when I play Street Fighter II.

PC Engine Japanese version.  Not sure if there are any differences with scoring.

A great game that I've never played back in the day.  Definitely a unique, challenging and fun experience after getting used to the controls.

I'm a big fan of handhelds and the Gameboy line.  I've bought almost all of the standard Gameboys when they were initially sold in stores.  The Micro is my preferred system for GBA games.  I'm still impressed with the design, the screen and the size.  The Micro is close to double the size of a GBA cart and yet the cart doesn't even stick out when inserted.

You can't go wrong with getting a GBA SP ags-101 since it plays the older games too.

I'm also interested in hearing more about swapping the original GBA with replacement backlit screens if anyone has any experience with them. Is it as simple as unplugging the old screen and plugging in a new one?   I still have the old Afterburner front light kit installed in my original GBA.  Not great at all by today's standards but it was impressive 15 years ago.

Quote from: crazydean on 12/13/2016, 02:26 PMThe emulation is good, but even though it has the same control layout as the original SNES, it's difficult to play action or platformers for some reason.
What model do you have? I don't recall if later models improved it, but the original PSP-1000 has a lousy d-pad. It's given me problems acknowledging diagonal inputs, for instance.
I totally agree, my psp-1000 dpad is pure crap.  It's stiff and diagonal directions seem to not fully register at times, making fighting moves (quarter circle moves) almost impossible to pull off.  Even playing a simple shooter like Gradius Collections is quite a chore.  I think the level of how bad the dpad varies with different psps since I've tested a friends psp-1000 and the dpad was a little better than mine.

Sounds great!

Quote from: esteban on 11/12/2016, 09:25 PMI expect this to be appealing to 1-2 people, at most.
I like it, that's an interesting comparison.  My brother and I were big fans of the Three's Company show when we were young, but never knew they made trading cards.

Well, I'm fairly short at 5'4".  130 lbs. seems like a good weight for my height.  I started my diet back in June this year and I was definitely overweight at 180 lbs.

Quote from: esteban on 11/16/2016, 03:22 PMI will change that. I am a silly person who didn't think anyone would be <140...

:)
Thanks, but not really necessary to change it just for me since I'm not actually competing in the challenge or trying to lose weight.  Just need to maintain the weight through the difficult holidays.  BTW, nice setup with the charts.

I should track my weight even though I'm not trying to lose anymore weight.   I'm under the 140 pound minimum to enter my data.

Currently at 128.6 lbs.  Surprisingly I haven't gain any since the last challenge.

Good luck to everyone in the challenge.

I tried to get one yesterday at various online retailers: Amazon, Gamestop & Target.  Couldn't add to the cart or check out and their sites were slow or crashing.  I definitely wasn't going to physically go to a store or wait in line for this since I'm not in a hurry to get one.

I've read that some people that went into certain stores yesterday morning were able to buy multiple systems where they didn't even enforce a buying limit.  The flipping and scalping is going to make it hard to get one this holiday season even if stores get more in stock.   Wait a few month after the hype dies and I'm sure these will be easy to get.

Cool, looks quite interesting and it's a game I haven't played.  Thanks for posting.

I'm not planning on losing anymore weight at this point but I should try to maintain a healthy diet and portion control.  I might have to get in round 2 if I gain a lot of weight back during the holidays.  I always hear that, losing weight is easier than keeping it off.

I plan on buying a replacement juicing machine soon, so the prize money will be well spent.

Good luck to everyone during the holidays.  Definitely gonna be difficult for me to hold back the good eating.

Started at 163.6
Finished at 128.5

35.1 lbs.  lost.

Honestly, I'm really surprised how much I've lost overall and quite thrilled with my results.  My target weight was to be around 140 lbs and never would have thought I'd ever reach or even surpass my goal.  I even had to buy smaller sized clothes a few weeks ago.

So after my juicer broke, I used a blender and strainer which worked well but took me a lot more time to make my daily juice.  I was still able to keep at it during this week's final stretch.

I'm pretty much a skeleton now, just in time for Halloween. :)  I definitely need to do strength training and gain some muscle mass.

Much thanks to Dean again for putting together and managing this challenge.  I definitely wouldn't have lost as much without you all and this challenge.

Neither sound appetizing to me.  Back in my high school days they used to have the Big Macs, 2 for $2 or Whoppers for $0.99.  My friends and I would often dare each other to see how many we could eat.  Like a dumb ass, I almost finished 4 Whoppers and was sick.  Never again after that.  It's also the reason why I don't like thousand island dressing.

I can't say I've ever experienced any freezing in Aldynes when I played through the real Hucard a few years back.  I haven't tried loading it on the TED though.  I'd be interested to know specifically where freezing might occur.
