Old timer here.

First saw the Turbo at the Montgomery Wards when I was scoping out the Genesis.

It wasn't until I saw the PC Engine write up in EGM #4 (which explained the orgins of the Turbo) that I first became curious about the card-based system.

When I saw the Turbo initially, I didn't know anything about it, who NEC was, or why it was coming out of nowhere to compete with Sega. That article cleared things up, made the connection to the wildly successful Japanese PC Engine, and the Turbo suddenly seemed like it had the weight to take on Sega and win. We all know how that turned out...

After collecting Christmas and birthday money and combining it with allowance and mowing/car washing income, I was able to pick up a CD unit. Again, EGM played a big role in convincing me to buy the CD attachment, with it's raving review of Ys. Ed, one reviewer giving it a 10 and declaring that the perfect game had finally been made...

After years of lusting over a Turbo Express for 10 years, I finally picked up one from eBay in 2000.

I got back into the Turbo in 2009 and have been collecting steadily since, really focusing on the PC Engine, Super Grafx and Super System Card games.

Quote from: Terminarcade on 01/17/2012, 12:49 PMI know, my Pce-cd setup is in my living room with the Jtag360, Ps3, Ps2 (phat japanese).
Awesome, clean set up there! Now, just get another PCE for that room and it'll be perfect!

Do you use a CRT TV? Big screen, small screen? Stereo speakers or mono through the TV? Just curious to know what people are playing their TG-16 or PCE on!

I have a smaller apartment, so I just play mostly on a 40" LCD TV in the living room. I do have an awesome little flat screen CRT 9" TV that's set up on my desk that gets some time on it as well. Of course I have a region-modded PCE/CD for each TV

Awesome article. Reminds me of the Feb 1990 spread in GamePro detailing the new Shuttle, Core and SuperGrafx PC Engine models.

Also the first time I started up Raiden... that soundtrack.  Man.  That soundtrack.  To this day I still think the TG16 music sounds better than the version on the PS1.
I'm with you there. Raiden on the TG16, in every way, seems superior to every other version I've played. Absolutely one of my favorite, very solid shooters.

I just had a "holy fuck" moment after seeing CrackTiger's post! Thanks guys!

Another moment for me was seeing the Turbo Express for the first time. I couldn't believe a portable like that could even exist!  ] [-o<

I'd have to agree with Ys, specifically, the end of part one and the scene intro to part to. Although the first level of Dracula X is a close second - It made me realize just how much untapped potential the Turbo had.

What would you consider a "holy fuck!" moments for the NEC systems? Something like a part of a game that made you go "whoa!" Was it seeing Jagu at the end of Legendary Axe? The opening sequence to Ys? The mega bosses in Lords of Thunder? Or a something from a PC Engine game that most of us American gamers haven't seen yet?

What's your favorite "awe" moment?

I know Red Ghost on here does region mods. You might want to hit him up and see what the pricing would be.

I know this has been talked about before, but it would be really cool to get a TurboBooster Plus type peripheral that would work with the Express/PCGT. Any new ideas or progress on this sort of item? I'd pay to commission something as long as it was clean and fucntional.
