I'm definitely interested in this.

I'd like to be included in this.

1. Gate of Thunder - I go back and forth as to whether this or M.U.S.H.A. on the Genesis is my favorite shmup.
2. Dragon's Curse - A very underrated early Metroidvania and one of my favorites of the genre.
3. Seirei Senshi Spriggan - Some of Compile's best work.
4. Devil's Crush - This is how you do pinball in a video game.
5. Gomola Speed - Bizarre, inventive, and a blast to play.  I wish we saw more games this creative.

So I didn't expect that downloading an Italian progressive rock band's discography would lead me to a song that probably inspired the most atmospheric song in Mario 64:

Jinmu Densho was an attempt to incorporate platforming, melee combat, and control of your forward/backward movement into a Space Harrier style 3D game.  The result was terrible, but it was interestingly and uniquely terrible.

So I have no idea where this guy got this, but he got himself a copy of the 2010 Bonk game and is streaming it on Youtube now.

Panic Bomber is one of those games where I played it, thought that the block shapes didn't lend themselves to the chains the game wanted you to pull off as well as Puyo Puyo, Magical Drop, or Columns, but then couldn't put it down for hours.  Like I know intellectually that it's not a great puzzle game (though it's not a bad one at all), but it's weirdly addictive.

Any other descent platformers.
Shubibinman 3 is pretty good, and you only need Japanese knowledge if you care about the plot.  Bakushou Yoshimoto Shinkigeki is pretty amusing as well.  It's based on a comedy show, and while you'll miss out the on the spoken jokes, there are plenty of visual gags, and you'll figure out the minigames.  Just be warned that both of these games are pretty short.

So I grabbed a handful of cheap loose hucards off of Rakuten, one of which was Fire Pro Wrestling 3.  Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time figuring out the mechanics of this game.  I seem to sometimes pull off some kind of move, but mostly get tossed around until I lose, and I'm not sure how to influence it.  Could someone help me get the basics down so that I can at least win a match sometimes?

!

I managed to find a video on Youtube of the Shubibinman 3 section I'm referring to (skip to 12:30).  My Japanese is pretty shitty, but she brings up the hometown and pen name of each artist, and I'm pretty sure she says that some are 11 and 12 years old and something about the staff being moved by this before it moves onto something else.  So I don't think this is the standard sort of omake stuff you usually find (there's plenty of that in the end credits and after this section), but if someone who's far better at Japanese than me wants to give it a listen and let me know if I'm totally misinterpreting what's going on there, that would be great.
#15
So I just played through Shubibinman 3 for the first time in a while, and after beating it, I discovered the omake in the options menu.  While I've seen extras on games before, this is the first time that I've ever seen a game include what seemed to be fan art on disk.  Were there other cases of this on the PC Engine?

Quote from: pixeljunkie on 11/09/2014, 11:29 AMand speaking of awesome platformers - Bakusho Yoshimoto No Shinkigeki

It's got nice graphics, some great humor and fun minigames. Its also terribly easy.
I was about to suggest this.  What would be merely a decent platformer was made into something memorable through some surprisingly funny visual gags and great visuals.  It would probably be even better if my Japanese wasn't utter shit and I could understand the dialogue.  It still goes for fairly cheap, and is worth picking up as long as you don't mind the fact that it's pretty short and easy (you'll probably beat it your first try).

Quote from: guest on 09/21/2014, 12:01 AMMan, why is Rockman NGPC so expensive? :-k
Probably because the Rockman name means that a whole bunch of collectors who otherwise don't give two shits about the NGPC want a copy.  If it makes you feel better, it's not really one of the highlights of the NGPC library.  It's decent, but that's about it.

When I have the money, I like to order a bunch of cheap games off of Rakuten.  If you're not familiar with it, it's a site through which you can order from various Japanese retailers.  Unfortunately, it has some issues:

1. The search function blows.  It's best to browse by category (PC Engine is here).

2. This is a collection of retailers, not one store, so keep in mind how many retailers you're buying from when trying to figure out shipping.  Usually, I just go to a store page that I keep seeing on a bunch of games and just browse through there.

3. This all ships from Japan, so you really need to buy a bunch of stuff at once to make the shipping cost worth it.

So Paste just posted an article about growing up with the TruboGrafX-16.  It's a bit of a change from the usual articles written by people who discovered the system years later, and I quite enjoyed it.

QuoteTurboGrafx-16: A Quarter Century of Gaming Excellence
By Leigh Alexander

IMG
The TurboGrafx-16 videogame system was released in America on August 29, 1989. On its 25th anniversary games and tech culture writer Leigh Alexander remembers what made this largely forgotten machine special.

There's this really easy lie I tell about my childhood in videogames: That I was a Sega Genesis girl. And it's true that when the playground wars were about Mario and Sonic, I picked Sonic—it was the attitude, really. I wanted to be a totally-radical 1990s babe, and Raphael from the Ninja Turtles, if he was real, was basically my model of a man. People still don't know what the Genesis' "Blast Processing" really was, but I was one of those kids who didn't really need to know. I just believed it utterly. I nodded along.

I was trying to be cool on the playground. The fact is, my heart belonged to NEC's TurboGrafx-16, and it still does. When you ask someone what their most beloved machine of all time was, they usually say Dreamcast for cred, but mine is the TG-16, and if I still had my hands on one you'd probably never see me again.

Yeah, this thing had an amazing library for having such a short lifespan.  SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium and Metal Slug 2nd Mission are must haves, but as long as you avoid the gambling games, you're virtually guaranteed to pick up something that's at least decent.  I'm going to recommend Biomotor Unitron and Faselei as good pickups.  The former is a Pokemon inspired game about building a giant robot, and the latter is a strategy game with a frankly bizarre gameplay gimmick that works about 100 times better than it should.  You have to put in all commands for your mech before a turn without any indication as to what your enemy is going to do beyond patterns you've observed.  Somehow this made for a tense, strategic game with surprisingly little frustration.

General Gaming / Re: Famicom Twin
06/05/2014, 07:00 PM
It comes with composite out, which should work fine any US TV that takes that.  The controller cord length does blow, but there is a connector for third party controllers.  However, it's not directly compatible with US controllers, though Google informs me that some people have made mods. For issues with the console, make absolutely sure they've tested the disk drive.  The original belts basically melt with age (seriously, I tried changing one once, and I had to scrape it out), so any Twin Famicom will have to have been repaired at some point to work now.

For recommendations, Ai Senshi Nicole is a great overhead action game from Konami.  It plays a lot like the overhead parts of The Guardian Legend.  Hudson's Binary land is the big hidden gem of the first few years of the Famicom and one of my favorite games on the console.  Even if you already have cart versions, it's worth grabbing the disk versions of Metroid and Kid Icarus if you like those games at all, since they have better music and save your game rather than requiring passwords.

One thing that helped me when I realized it: all else held equal, stationary troops have an advantage against moving ones.  It's therefore usually better to let the enemy come to you than chase them down.  Also, archers are practically useless unless you're fighting harpies, and mages are the same unless you're fighting harpies or zombies.

The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games are some fun, accessible roguelikes.
Yoshi's Island DS isn't as good as the original, but is still a really solid platformer.
Pac-Pix is a surprisingly good game that people dismissed as being a tech demo for the DS.  It's really original and one of the hidden gems on the system.

Cocoron is really good.  It plays largely like Mega Man, but the gimmick is that you build your characters from various parts you have access to, each effecting your stats.  One of the best Famicom games to never come out here.

Another that you might consider is Layla.  It isn't anything amazing, but for 1986, it has a surprising amount of content.  It handles a little weird, like your character is on roller skates or something, but it's decent once you get used to it.

Quote from: Gao on 08/01/2013, 03:18 PMI found that Fatal Fury Special's load times are much shorter than average (and it's a much better fighter than most people seem to think it is).
I love Fatal Fury Special.  It was my first game I got for my AES.  I didn't realize people didn't like it.
The Neo Geo community seems to be pretty fond of it, but usually when I see it get brought up elsewhere, it's just handwaved as one of the countless Street Fighter II clones that came out in the 90s.
#32
The load times can vary between fighters, with the newer ones generally being worse.  I've heard that that most people don't find KoF '99 or LB2 playable, even if they otherwise tolerate the NGCD, though I've avoided picking those up.  KoF '94 is notable for loading a whole team at once rather than having to load each round like the rest of the series, and I found that Fatal Fury Special's load times are much shorter than average (and it's a much better fighter than most people seem to think it is).  World Heroes 2 Jet also loads multiple opponents at once, but on the negative side, you're stuck playing World Heroes 2 Jet :P.  Some other recommendations:

Viewpoint - a rather difficult, but well designed isometric shooter.  One of my favorites.  It's also a game that's old enough to only ever load when you boot it up.
Super Baseball 2020 - It's amazing how much adding women, robots, land mines, and an upgrade system to baseball can liven things up.  Another game that only loads once.

Avoid:
Savage Reign - For some reason, this seems to be one of the more common games for the console, but there's a reason that it's a forgotten fighter.  It's not terrible, but there's no reason to get a below average fighter on an SNK console when so many better ones are just as easily available.

So I've taken part in a few raffles here, and I figured that I should do something to give back to the community, since I tend to be more of a lurker.  I happen to have these two new in shrink wrap copies of Flight of the Intruder for the NES that I've realized I don't really need.  It's hardly a noteworthy game, but it can help fill out a collection or give you the opportunity to open a brand new NES game for the first time in decades without feeling guilty about losing a boatload of potential money by doing so.  I figure I'll draw two winners next Friday (1/11) and mail them out this weekend.  I'll pay shipping in the US, and am willing to work something out something with anyone else who wants in.  This is open to everyone here.

Saw it yesterday.  The pacing had some issues at times, and some might not like the tone being a bit lighter, but it was still really enjoyable.  Just don't go in expecting that you'll get LotR again, and you should have a good time.

Quote from: futureman2000 on 12/16/2012, 09:54 PMCan you use back-up games on regular floppy disks, or are they proprietary? I had always assumed that they were regular floppies.
They used this weird 3 inch disk format (normal floppies are 3.5" or 5.25"), so you'll have a hard time finding the hardware to burn new disks.  Pirate disks did exist, so it's possible, and the hardware was obviously made at some point, but I doubt any has been since the early 90s.

Oh, one thing to keep in mind with the Twin Famicom that is rarely mentioned: the controller cords are really, really short.  You pretty much have to have the console placed directly in front of you to play it, and the controllers are hard wired in, so you can't easily get an extension cord of any sort (though there is a port for third party controllers, but only one).  Just wanted to give you a heads up if you want a console that you can place in a regular media stand and play from your couch or something.  The original Famicom has hard wired controllers as well, and I understand that they're also pretty short, though I never had one and can't confirm if they're any better than the Twin Famicom.  If cord length is a concern, the AV Famicom has regular NES controller ports, so you could get one of those and a regular FDS.
#49
Quote from: Frank_fjs on 12/16/2012, 11:57 AMAs I'm sure you're aware the original belts on the disk drive were poorly manufactured and haven't stood the test of time, but replacing them and re-calibrating the head is rather easy.
For what it's worth, I had a much harder time fixing an FDS than most people.  Replaced the belt, spent hours trying to adjust it, then it started not being able to tell if batteries were inserted.  Ended up just getting a Twin Famicom that was already repaired.  The belts pretty much melt after a few years, so if you see someone selling one and they don't state that they fixed it, you pretty much have to assume that it currently doesn't work.

Game-wise, both Kid Icarus and Metroid have saving ability (in addition to music and sound effect differences), which makes them worth getting if you like them at all.  Though Metroid seems to have unusually long load times for some reason.  The best Japan exclusive game I've played is Konami's Ai Senshi Nicole, a top-down action game that plays a lot like the overhead sections of The Guardian Legend.
