10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Looks like one of the 3 plastic pins that holds the CD mech is broken off. The far right side.

That's insanely fucking way too fucking much.
Even too much in Canadian money. Try Russian Ruble. Which would convert to a much more reasonable $3.15 USD

I hope that's in CAN$$

Does it come with any games beside keef?

Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are pretty good. SG:Universe was kind of a flop but they did finally explain why the Stargate ring in the original movie poster had 9 chevrons.

7 Chevrons are like the local phone number you can use, it's limited to within the galaxy.
8th Chevron is like the area code for different galaxy. O'Neil helped figure this when he had a brain overload and met with Asgard race.
And finally in Universe, 9 chevron code is like a mobile number, it goes to a specific ring and not to a star system so it was possible to go from ship to ship. and planet to ship. However the range is limited without extra power that nearly wiped out the whole team in the pilot episode.

I used to be active on DP forum but not for nearly 10 years now. I can't even remember the logon info or the original email address registered with that.  I pretty much switched to AtariAge for general gaming with Assemblergames as secondary.

PCE, Sega, and 1 other are specific forum that I also go now and then.

When I have problem, I find it's easier to find a virgin boy to sacrifice to a shotachan community than to find and hire a virgin girl.

You do know there are common anode 3 pin LEDs?  If you wanted one (green) to be always on when the system is on, just wire it with cathode end from green through resistor to common ground.

Or just leave the original red LED in and mount a green LED next to it.

Defective and non-working system are crapshoot. You have no way of knowing exactly what the issue and whether someone tried to repair before or not.  I picked up a Duo-R 2 years ago very cheap because the seller reported video problem.  It took me a while to figure out the nature of the problem as it didn't show up when I played HuC games or some CD games.  Only games that required System 3.0 card (or ROM in Duo) showed problem which pointed to RAM chip used by System 3.0 ROM.   https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=19474.msg416018#msg416018

Once I found the exact issue and fixed it with a piece of wire, it has been working flawlessly since then.

Something like LT2 but without the big price tag.

Wonder if I could make a wooden shell? Wood is cheap.

And yes I deadbugged LED on top of a transistor and resistor to keep the finished mod tiny and neat.  Not everyone can do deadbug technique so get a small perf board if you prefer.  SMD transistor can work but it will be hard as someone discovered, the tiny pins broke off easily.  Use regular through hole TO-92 style, those are the most common design. Do check the pinout!

I've wondered how the multitap actually works.  I know about the polling but is there a way to integrate multitap inside a console and maybe have a switch to toggle between player 1 only for most games and 5 players mode for party games?  4 pole double throw switch to toggle the 4 controller data lines between multitap chip and bypass for one controller?

I still think people needs to be licensed to use any kind of soldering iron.  A 100w iron may get hot fast but there's a reason it's generally used in plumbing and big ass wiring work, not for recapping.

And electric tape are shit in the long run. The plastic generally shrink and warp and often leave sticky residue that are damn near impossible to clean off. If anyone needs to rework on that Duo board in a few years, I'd wear rubber gloves to avoid sticky mess.  Cling wrap... just no. Won't stay clinged in place and can fry sensitive parts.

Damn I remember when I tried that and it ran like shit because 386 didn't have the horsepower to emulate NES CPU and PPU. Setting up the sound was a bitch back then, having to know address and IRQ to use it correctly and having to use correct sound driver (Soundblaster or something)

Aspect ratio on a small screen doesn't really show much but if that LCD had an ability to go 4:3 I would have changed the bezel and covered the unused sides.  A true 4:3 LCD isn't made anymore and can be expensive.  PSOne for example is a popular one for mod use but it is older technology with CFL and would suck on power hard unless someone does perform LED mod.

I am not a God of bondo and I don't have vacuum forming machine or CNC machine so those are out. Is there a way to get custom shell that can be easily used for making a portable PCE?  Been wanting to get one like LT but LT costs too much and TE/GT are limited by size to about 3" LCD without looking ugly. I wanted something with 5 or 7" LCD on a PCE or Coregrafx board.

Any suggestion or idea?
#17
And the resellers who are trying to sell it for over $100 are obviously pissed again.  :D
#18
What's up with Turboexpress and GT?  Seems nowday they are going for over $300 recapped and there's a couple with box for $500.  It seems like the price doubled since I got my TE a year ago.  Kayne effect?

If you make it 1500 UK pounds, I'll buy it.  Since that silly Bexit, the money went down. I think right now UKP 1500 is like $3.14 USD

If you get a Lynx and are willing to spend a fair amount on it, consider contacting McWill on Atariage forum for LCD replacement.  It is a huge difference between 30 year old stock LCD and today's LCD and McWill makes custom board with new LCD that fits into Atari Lynx just perfectly. A few wires to solder in.

Also keep an eye on AA forum, there's an SD based flash cart coming through (like Everdrive but not by Krikzz) that will play most games.  Some of the games can be expensive to get.

Bought this a while ago from Japan, they arrived today:

one controller was listed as flaky, replaced the internal with spare from "part" controller I kept around and now I have 4 working controllers plus a mouse.  (8 total controllers... where did I put my 5 players adapter?)

It's been ages since I was knocked out but it was for tonsils.  Probably 35 years ago.  Felt like it was next morning when I woke up but it was only 1 hour later.

PS fat tongue can't taste well so don't go for fancy ice cream for pain relief. Stick with something common like vanilla or chocolate.

Does it only squeal with certain disc like a Justin Bieber song? You probably got teenaged girl hiding inside the Duo

Does the spindle turn freely? It could be rubbing against the side of something? Or maybe the spindle motor is about to go out?

Seny Wega TV model KD-27FS170.  Has 3 sets of input: composite+S-video, component, and front composite only.  Works.  One problem: I don't have a place to put it.  I am quite attached to my Vizio LCD TV (which works with everything but the 2600, and sadly doesn't support 240 on component) and I don't have any room! I suppose I could evict the old 13" Commodore monitor, get RGB to Component converter for my C128D, and set the TV on top of my C128D although I don't know if the 30 year old metal box was ever rated to hold a 100-lbs CRT TV.

Populous have bubble on the back but I've checked (glue had dried out anyway) and it's empty. It looks like a spot for a small button battery, like the card shell is based on Tennokoe Bank card but never used the extra space.

It is a bit odd Duo card has bigger circuit than Pro even though Pro has extra 64k RAM added on top of the total RAM needed for Arcade games.

I used to buy mystery PSX but quit buying a few years ago.  I have around 30 right now and only 2 had problem reading discs.  I figure if I sit on this pile long enough I can sell it for about 10x what I paid (mostly $5, often with video cord and controllers)

Right now I have 2 other consoles that needs something.  A PS3 with YLoD and XBox360 with RRoD. Both has no video out.   Both were cheap.  $20 for PS3 with 80GB HD, the fat one with 2 controllers, and $30 for 360 with cables, 3 power supplies (dunno why) and 3 controllers, no HDD.

SO what to do with them? Could sell controllers, 360 cables and 360 power supplies.

Dragon Heart 3. I liked the first one, the second one was meh. Never saw 3rd one but I got the used DVD for only $2.  If it blows, I can always sell it for $2, basically legal rent-free video rental

Quote from: StarDust4Ever on 06/17/2016, 07:03 AMCouldn't one quad gang four DPDT switches together? Glue the bodies together with superglue, making sure they are perfectly aligned, then drill a hole through the switche arms with a 1/16th drill bit. Drive a nail though the holes and cut the tip flush. Add a drop of superglue to secure the nail. Bam! Homemade 8P2T. 8)

Now you only need to drill a long ass rectangular hole in your enclosure...  :P
You could but flipping 4 switches gets tedious, big hole looks messy, and with this 8p or the 10p on eBay, you only need at most a 1/4" hole for the switch.
#30
Any chance of homebrewn game reproduction? I'd guess asking for permission and getting the ROM. Maybe alter then ROM to show on screen "REPRODUCTION" to really discourage sneaky greedy eBay flipper?
#31
Just a minor nitpick with Genesis stuff: you can't use 32x and Power Base Converter at the same time. With PCE, you could use any consoles with any CD and any peripheral and all games* would work.  Supergrafx even have a switch for some PCE game that might not like extra hardware.

*CD games still depend on certain system version, can't run Arcade game on a 3.0 card for example.

Also some TV are just black and white.  If the glass looks grey when it's off, it's probably B&W only.  If it's dark or black, it should be color.

Off-Topic / Re: Tire Question
06/16/2016, 07:25 PM
Tire pressure sensing is not necessarily just inside tires, some models have different ways of detecting soft tires.  On my Grand Prix, it uses rotation sensors to monitor wheel's rotation rate (part of ABS system) and when the computer detects one of the tire's rotation rate is off by about 25% or more from other tires, it trips low pressure warning.

It can be reset from the dash board such as when you have spare tire (which is smaller and rotates faster on axis) or something.

If it glows under UV light, how about UV LEDs behind?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201444656382?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

10 pole 2 throw switch, $7 and it comes in 4.  I just got this for a different project and it does latch so it'd be good for TG16 and PCE region mod if you prefer mechanical switch version.  Since the region mod only needs 8 poles, the extra 2 can be for anything like LED lightning (one color for USA, different color for Japan) or left unused.

This sure beats the expensive $25 price tag for a single 8p2t switch that have been around for the past few years.

The seller has more than 100 lots (400 switches) currently so he won't run out anytime soon.

Not bashing the electronic switch version (any of them) but some of them do have issues with Everdrive while the mechanical switch don't have any problem.
#36
TG-16 regularly hits $100 working, a plain old white PCE is usually found half that price.  PCE does not have composite port so one will need to use rear EXT port or mod and install a port inside.  Removing stock RF and installing 8 pin mini DIN wired the same way as Sega Genesis and Megadrive works the best.

PCE has one benefit: works with almost all controllers. TG-16 only works with TG-16 without adapter.
#37
Genuine PS2 slim PSU will work.  Make sure it is the real Sony brand and not off brand junk, the one I had was causing noisy video while real PS2 adapter worked cleanly.
#38
Second best video mod most people can get on older consoles.  RGB is the best one but not everyone has access to RGB capable display. S-Video is very good and is great if you have display with S-Video.

The next best is composite which is the default of most consoles and they do suck now day.

There's also component (which is about same as RGB overall) and HDMI but a lot of them are only on newer consoles and extreme modding on older consoles.  RF round out the list and it's the pits.  It was fine in 1970 when most people had tiny 13" B&W TV.  It looks diwnright ugly when you're using a 100" HDTV.
#39
Won't work, PS/2 are 6 wires plus key tab.  You need Macintosh serial cable from pre-USB Macs.  They are common and monoprice used to have them (they are OOS atm, not sure if they will restock or not)

Watched some episodes here and there, couldn't get into any of Sailor Moon. Oddly I liked Card Captor Sakura.

Right now I am catching up to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_you_thought_there_is_never_a_girl_online%3F which seemed funny.  A girl who can't tell apart fantasy themed MMORPG game games from reality, a boy who somehow ended up marrying the said girl in game and has her clinging to him in reality, and a few more girls around in a school club trying to teach her the difference between fantasy and reality.  With hilarious result.

The latest episode #10 have the 4 of them getting wiped a few times trying to take on big guild in PVP combat.  The one on one practice PVP were pretty funny too and seems to suggest the pay-to-win scam most online game has is useless in PVP.

No boobies shot but in game characters have very revealing outfit, showing everything but the nipples.

Probably the same seller who wanted $10,000 for a Lynx game.

I need to do something like this. Show off something I have that no one else can have or is very rare, and set it at a price so high only fools would consider buying.  If it doesn't sell, I'd know how many people are envious by how many watchers and views.  If it sells, I'll sell it and wait for another to come up for less to buy and keep extra cash.

Now where did I put that CIB Turbografx CD set...?  :-"
#42
Megaman 1 and 2 is playable on the real thing, been playing them off my TED.  A dual 1/2 card would probably work well.

Too bad no one tried to port any more MM games, maybe they got too complex and trying to change the ROM to work with PCE version of mapper chip rather than Nintendo's MMC chips wasn't practical?
#43
Instead of finding the whole cable with angled plug, how about looking for DIN 8 M-F angled adapter? I did a quick look on eBay, only saw mini-8 angled, not regular 8. :/

Quote from: guest on 06/05/2016, 04:14 AMNegative Feedback? Since when are eBay sellers able to leave negative feedback again?
Not since 2008.  Either the seller's a clueless idiot who hadn't tried leaving a neg or he's stating it as a scare tactic to ward off clueless buyer who doesn't know that.

Sold for $437

I should take a shit on my non working TG16 controller and try selling that.

And it's now $286.25  Are those dirt made of gold??

Up to about 10 minutes before the classic movie? So we'd see Leia on Tantive IV receiving transmission from rebel to be passed on just before a star destroyer catches up with them and orders them to surrender?

That's a neat repair job! My only concern is if the PCB can flex a bit, the crack could spread a bit more. So try to avoid flexing it when you recap.  Drilling a little hold at the end of the crack usually will stop it but it appears to go under the IC chip so it may be hard to safely block the crack.

Get a regular music CD and play it.  If it skips a lot, try adjusting the pots  If it doesn't skip, your legit Ys may be bad.
CD-R is hit or miss
