I just wanted to leave some positive feedback about Craig's (Sparky's) spine labels. I have ordered two sets from him and they are fantastic!! He is a pleasure to deal with, great communication and quick shipping! If you are thinking about getting them I highly recommend them!

Snow/ice is in the forecast here for Monday. So I may get a three day weekend too. (My library's not supposed to be closed for President's Day) I'm going to try to get through a game (if the power doesn't go out).

Enjoy your extra day and good luck with Cratermaze!

Got through the Addams Family last night, and the power went out.

Attempt #3 tonight or tomorrow.
I've been playing that game some recently. As a platformer, I really want to like it.... but the aggravating deaths and losing your power ups once you die make it a very irritating game.  :x

You can knock it up to 50 now! I finally finished through Bomberman this evening. (The version on the Gate of Thunder SuperCD)

The pictures are not the best, my aging camera is not very good at taking screen shots.

This "PC Duo" is certainly an interesting discovery, if it does turn out to be the real deal.

I've been trying to see if I could find any information on it through the FCC. I figure if it has a FCC sticker on it, like the American TurboDuo, then there must be some sort of record if the HES-DUO-02 was registered with them.

Well, the FCC's record search is not the most user-friendly site. There are various grantee and product code numbers you need to know to narrow down your search. (I'm a librarian so I deal with this sort of stuff every day).

After digging around a bit I did manage to find info on the original TurboGrafx-16. It was registered under "NEC Display Solutions of America, Inc" with a grantee code of A3D. The grantee code is important because it makes it easier to search for an item.
https://fccid.io/A3D

The full FCC code is A3DHESTGX01, using HESTGX01 as the product code brings up this:
https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearchResult.cfm?RequestTimeout=500

However, entering various versions of "HES-DUO-01" turns up no results. Even looking under the A3D grantee code, I cannot find any other Turbo-related products. I was hoping I could find FCC info on the American TurboDuo HES-DUO-01 and see if that led to a new grantee code, or one connected to the PC Duo listing of the HES-DUO-02. So far, no luck.

I'm going to keep looking, and see if any other listing for a NEC brand or subdivision leads anywhere. Am I missing something, or does anyone have any other information they would like to add in?  :?:

Quote from: johnnykonami on 02/08/2016, 01:58 PMI always get a little sad when a good game gets this super rare status.
This too saddens me, and probably saddens most of us here, johnnykonami. I hate thinking back on some of the fun games I remember renting and playing as a kid: Panic Restaurant comes to men, and seeing how expensive they have become due to a mix of rarity and demand. That's just the way the market goes, I suppose, but it is one of the reasons I quite collecting for (and sold off) my Nintendo collection.

Please excuse me, for I am new to the forum and guessing that Magical Chase and game prices have probably been discussed here to death, but I am at least glad that the 'Holy Grail' of NTSC TurboGrafx games is, at the very least, considered a quality game.
Compare that to Stadium Events - it's super rare, goes for an outlandish amount of money, and, as anyone who's played World Class Track Meet can tell you, is not a great game.

I've thought about getting an Everdrive. I love getting the original games, but I'm not a purist and if I ever pick up another NES, SNES, or Genesis will probably use Everdrives with them. I can see myself getting one for my PCE in the next year to play MC. That's a game that, financially, I know is just always going to be out of my reach. I would get one now, but my gaming time is severely restricted by my useless assignments I have to do for graduate school.   ](*,)

NecroPhile,
Congrats on beating the game!
How difficult would you say Magical Chase is compared to many of the other popular shooters on the TurboGrafx? For a game that garners so much attention due to its rarity and value, I know little about its play mechanics. I know Chris gave it a high score on Turbo Views, so with a copy up for auction now (currently sitting at $2,454 with a little over a day to go), I'm curious to hear other opinions about the game.
If it were a more common shooter, like Blazing Lasers, R-Type, Galaga, Super Star Soldier, or Gate of Thunder, do you think it would be considered one of the better shooters on the system?

I've been following that Magical Chase auction. I find it interesting that it is listed as an actual auction instead of a buy it now. I am going to be curious to see it is ends legitimately, or if a bunch of people just place troll bids to drive the price up even further and it ends up having to be relisted, or sold somewhere else.

Can anyone on here remember the last time a copy like this sold as an auction on Ebay and how much it went for?  :-k

Went through Neutopia last week when I was stuck in the house due to the snow storm. I use a modded PCE Duo-R with a Scart to RGB adapter.
IMG

The RGB adapter has started to act up though. I first thought it was the laser, since I noticed the screen acting up whenever there was a non-action, cinema, moment while playing Ys I&II. Now I've noticed it on HuCards though. It doesn't happen when I use the original composite cable. You can see it here how it warps the text page in the funny "Take me now" screen:

I should have some free time this weekend. I'll try to go through Bomberman if no one else is working on it.

Speaking of conventions, anyone know of any gaming conventions at that happen in the Carolinas or perhaps Atlanta? I would love to attend one and maybe check out some Turbo stuff if anyone has any available. (though I know I'll probably over pay)

There's a guitar show coming up in my area later this month. I don't want to blow too much of my "play" money there if there's a chance I could check out some Turbo stuff in person!

Quote from: waynedoodle on 11/24/2015, 05:29 PMMatt,
We got the TG16 from Toys R Us behind Westgate for maybe 75 or 100.  The CD was probably ordered from Sears but can't recall.  Santa gave it to us for being good teenage boys.  The 2 CD games we got after Christmas (Y'3 & Last Alert) came from Haywood Mall Baddges or Electronic Boutique, can't remember which one.
Ha! The Toys R Us behind Westgate mall? No kidding! That's awesome that they had turbo stuff there. I loved going to that store as a kid. I don't remember getting a lot of video games there, but I did get a lot of Lego stuff from them, a large pirate ship in particular. I liked how the building was set up to build your excitement and anticipation to the highest level possible... There was that long, enclosed, entranceway after the front doors on the building's right hand side. You had to go all the way down it, passed the shopping carts, before turning to your left and seeing the whole building open up in front of you. I used to break out in a full sprint to run to the other side of the store where the Legos where. I've always thought they designed the store that way to purposely build up your excitement as much as possible. I still drive by there occasionally when I am in Spartanburg, I think the Toys R' Us moved across the street and the building is now a Chucky Cheese.

Fantastic episode Chris!
#22
Yep, I do believe it was Pixels and Pawns. It was in a large shopping center next to one of the main roads, and since USC had a home football game that evening the traffic was backed up for miles.

I do remember their prices being some of the highest I've ever encountered at a retro store.  :?
#23
There's a game store in Columbia, I cannot think of the name of it off hand at the moment. I stopped by there November last year while I was in Columbia for business on the USC campus. They had a couple of Turbo games back behind glass. Hucards only. Most were the sports titles and Keith Courage, but they did have a copy of New Adventure Island which I was really surprised to see!
#24
Thanks for the greeting WD!

That's a great story about you and your brother having a Turbo, enjoying it as kids, and now getting to play it again as adults! Just curious, where you living in the Upstate when you both were kids and got a Turbo? I've long wondered if the system was ever really sold or marketed in this area. I do not remember seeing any ads for it, or seeing any Turbo stuff for sale in local stores.

Yeah, it has been slim pickings finding Turbo stuff locally. I rarely see anything beyond Keith Courage at local stores and never see anything at flea markets. Though, as I mentioned in another thread, some TurboGrafx stuff did show up at '2nd and Charles' buy/sale/trade store in Greenville the other day. They're on Laurens Rd and in the same shopping  center as Petsmart and Guitar Center. I spoke with the clerks, they said most of the Turbo stuff had recently been sold, but they did have copies of Devil's Crush and Super Star Soldier, both are HuCard/Manual/Jewel Case. I'm not that up to date on what the going prices are for those games, but they were asking $60 for Devils Crush and $100 for Super Star Soldier.

I don't know if any of you have heard of "2nd and Charles", but it is a buy-sale-trade store that carries books, movies, music, and video games. Their retro game prices are kind of scatter-brained, sometime stuff is set at a deal, sometimes it is marked up way too high.

Anyways, I stopped by the one in Greenville, SC this morning just to look around and I was shocked to actually see some TurboGrafx games. Apparently someone had dropped off a large amount the other day. The staff didn't really know that much about them, but some customer had already come in and bought most of their stock.
Here's what they had left:
- Andre Panza Kickboxing - $12 - Jewel case and game, no manual
- Dungeon Explorer - $22 - Jewel case and game, no manual
- Devil's Crush - $60 - Game, jewel case, and manual
- Super Star Soldier - $100 - Game, jewel case, and manual.

If anyone is interested and okay with those prices you may want to contact them.

Oh, what really freaked me out was that they had two of the Zelda CD-I games... I had never even seen them in person before.

I have used the TG16 controller, PCE-Duo and Duo-R, and Ave 3 controllers. Of them, the TG16 feels best to me. The D-Pad seems a little sturdier and less 'twitchy' than the PCE ones, though I do love the look of my off-white PCE controller since it matches my Duo-R. The Ave3 is interesting, but I do not have any fighting games so the three-buttons have not really come of use, yet. I would like to check out the Shuttle, Ave6 and RX controllers someday.

I have thought about opening up my white PCE controller and seeing if I could fit the insides of a spare TG16 controller inside, so I'll have one where the D-Pad isn't a problem. That's a project for another day though when I have a little more free time!

I am a newer gamer. I didn't even know that the TurboGrafx existed back when it was first released. I guess word of it never trickled down to my little corner of South Carolina. (same goes for the Master System). It wasn't until college in the early 2000s I spoke to someone about import games and they mentioned the PC Engine. That peaked my curiosity and read it to it and discovered the TurboGrafx. I looked for one for quite a while, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I managed to pick up a console. I had a NES, SNES, and played some Genesis stuff but after learning about the TG16, I knew I had to try one out one day.
For a long time I had built up a large collection of NES games but I got burnt out on the system and the way prices have shot up. I know that TurboGrafx stuff is far from cheap these days, but the console's game library interests me way more than say the SNES or Genesis. Besides, if I'm going to have to pay a lot for a game, I'd rather it be something enjoyable like Jackie Chan, New Adventure Island, and Neutopia II instead of Color a Dinosaur, TMNT: Tournament Fighters, or Waynes World.
After a while, I did manage to pick up a console about four years ago and fell in love with it. I dreamed over a CD system but never managed to pick one up. Foolishly, I sold my collection off last year. A decision I have SEVERELY regretted ever since. Since then, I have picked up a Doujindance modded PC Engine Duo-R and have enjoyed rediscovering games I had previously owned, but experiencing for the first time some of the CD and import games. :)

Just finished up Book I of Ys: Book I&II. Book II will have to wait until later when work settles down.

My only prior experience with the Ys series was playing Ys III on the SNES as a kid, so the over the top world view instead of side scrolling was a bit of an adjustment. I didn't even know about Book I & II, so I was always curious why there was suddenly a game III that was out when I had never heard of the first two.

All I can say is... WOW... what a great game! :)

Admittedly, I was skeptical at first about the "bump into your enemies instead of swinging a sword" gameplay but I found I adjusted to it fairly quickly. It also made grinding and leveling up seem easier. There were some cryptic moments to the game that left me puzzled (the mirror section mainly) but overall, I was really, really, impressed by the game (and I'm not even technically done with it yet, Book II awaits!).
It is another example of where I wish I could go back in time and visit "8-year old me" - show myself this game and say "The TurboGrax exists and you are SO missing out by not having one!!".

Hey Everyone!

I'm thinning out my PC Engine collection and just looking at TG-16 stuff for now (I'm set with the PCE games I have now and would like to add some money to my "Matt wants a new acoustic guitar" fund). I have a lot of 19 PC Engine games plus two controllers I am interested in selling and thought I would post them up here first. I do want to sell them as a lot, not separately, and I am not interested in any trades, so please keep that in mind. All of the games have been tested and work fine. They all include the HuCard, original manual, and original jewel case.

I've always liked the look of a PAL TurboGrafx. I almost would not mind picking one up that looked nice but was no longer working and just transferring the shell over to a NTSC system so I could play games on it without any slow down or hassle.
#41
Since you are all talking about the Arcade Card, I was curious about something and hope someone can clarify or give advice.

The Arcade card (Duo or Pro) is meant to give extra RAM to a PCE CDRom unit or PCE Duo unit. With the PCE Duo already having Super System CD card RAM built into the console, could you mod a PCE Duo to include the added RAM needed to operate Arcade Card games?

Note: I have no idea how this would work, or if someone else has already tried it. It's just a random thought concerning the Arcade Card I wanted to throw out.

I love the Turbo Views series, spida! It is without a doubt my favorite gaming review series on You Tube!  :D
I purchased Final Lap Twin after seeing your review of it. I would normally avoid most sports games, but the way you showed how it mixes racing and RPG elements I knew it was something I should try out.
I hope you are doing well and look forward to your new episodes!

Oh, also, you mentioned in one of your earlier videos that the sound was starting to go out some in your TurboDuo. Have you had it upgrade since then with a cap job or have you started using something else like a Duo-R or RX?

I went on a big SMS kick a few years ago, mainly some of the PAL titles since, even though seeing SMS games in my area was very rare, I wanted to try out some stuff that was released in Europe where the console was quite successful.

If you are going to look for PAL games and cannot find any locally and have to resort to Ebay, I recommend doing worldwide searches and buying from European or Australian sellers.
Some of these have already been mentioned, but here's my two cents:
Asterix Series:
- Asterix
- Asterix and the Great Rescue
- Asterix and the Secret Mission
*The Asterix titles are all solid platformers.
The Disney Games:
- Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
- Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
- Donald Duck's Lucky Dime Caper
- Deep Duck Trouble starring Donald Duck
They are not as good as the NES Capcom Disney games, but they are solid, straightforward platformers if that is something you enjoy.
- Master of Darkness
A great Castlevania style game. Not as fun as the original Castlevania, but a solid title nonetheless.
- Ninja Gaiden
It's cool because it is not like the NES or PCE versions. The level layouts and bosses are different. I'm not the biggest fan of the SMS controller, but the controls in this game work surprisingly well. Having the pause button on the console will become a big bother in this game when you want to quickly pause the game to access the situation you are in.
Sonic Games
- Sonic 1
- Sonic 2
- Sonic Chaos

I was never really impressed by the "speed" aspect of the Sonic games on the Genesis. It just didn't appeal to me. I actually prefer these versions because there's more emphasis on platforming and correctly timing your jumps. Sonic Chaos is a little too easy though if you don't pay attention to getting. The hangliding parts of Sonic 2 are pretty cool.

And of course there's always any of the Wonder Boy series games.

General Gaming / Re: NES turns 30
10/22/2015, 01:46 PM
30 years? Wow... talk about a nostalgia trip!
My older cousin had one and I had seen him play it, and I had played on an Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 another relative had. I got my first NES for Christmas, 1990. I had just turned 7 yrs old and I still remember opening it up, seeing the packaging on the side with the Zapper and SMB/Duck Hunt combo. (I never saw the ROB unit). My mother had recently quit working at the local mill to take care of myself, my little brother, and little sister, and my dad was a truck driver, so our financial means were limited and I'm still amazed and ever thankful they bought me a Nintendo for Christmas.
We hooked it up that morning to a TV my parents bought earlier in the 80s from a large furniture and home furnishings outlet near Spartanburg. It was one of those old, very large TVs, that sat in a wooden cabinet and looked like a piece of furniture. Me and my mom worked on getting through level 1-1 all morning long, when we finally went into level 1-2 I was amazed that the game was more than one level!
It is actually kind of a shock I grew to love the NES though, because after getting the system the follow up games I ended up getting from friends and relatives over the years were such gems as Circus Caper, Super Pitfall, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and Top Gun - not what I would call a stellar line up to show off the system! I ended up playing through a lot of my cousin's games: SMB 2 and 3, Ducktales, Dragon Warrior IV, Zelda, Mega Man 2, and Destiny of an Emperor.... Those game all left a big impression on me. After he got a SNES, I picked most of his old NES games and kept playing them all through the 1990s.
Ah, the memories!
#45
I would be interested to see the game without the background scrolling. I love PCE NG, but the way the background scrolls in such a jerky manner really disorients me. I don't know, maybe it is the way my mind processes the moving images it see. Sometimes, I think in stage 2, it gets so bad I just have to shut the game off for a while because I start getting a headache. I've never had a game do that to me. (Virtual Boy excluded) I love the PCE version over the NES version. Besides the graphics the controls feel a little more fluid and the hit detection is a little more balanced. Pity that the background scrolling can be so distracting on such an awesome game! It was the first import PCE title I ever picked up!

I don't even remember seeing Laserdiscs in rental shops. Though I do remember some places having Beta tapes since we had a Beta player and recorder at home, but that was around 1988~89.

Thought I would resurrect this thread and make a post.
I was thinking about this topic today as I came home from work after I drove past the where the local 'Mom n' Pop' video rental store used to be in town. The thought popped in my head "I wonder if they ever rented out TurboGrafx-16 games?" back when they were open. I used to rent NES titles there all the time as a kid (and practically wore out their copies of Mega Man 3 and 4). I cannot recall ever seeing anything that would have resembled a TG-16 game (I didn't even know the system existed at the time). They never really had a lot of 16-bit titles, I don't remember seeing a lot of SNES or Genesis stuff there. They did NES titles on their shelves until around the time they closed in 1997 or 1998. I can remember renting games like Panic Restaurant, Little Samson, and Chip n' Dale 2 and playing them over the weekend when my cousin already had a N64 and kept raving about 3d games. I would never imagine those NES games would command the values they do now.
It's cool to read from forum members their stories from seeing stores that did carry Turbo stuff. It must have been neat to have rentals shops that carried that kind of variety!

My copy of Neutopia has a rental shop sticker on the manual and HuCard sleave from "Flagship Video" out of Oxford, PA. Though you'll notice the item #s don't match. It makes me wonder what other stuff they carried.

Very enjoyable episode Joe!

I second o.pwuaioc comment on the Sonic Master System games that were PAL only. I basically bought my first Master System just so I could play some of those. I think you may have covered Master of Darkness in an earlier episode, but that's great one to be pointed out. There were several quality Disney games too. We only got the Game Gear versions, but I enjoyed them. They're not like a the Capcom-produced Disney games for the NES and have a more puzzle-like feel instead of being a straightforward action platformer. I like the change of pace and variety that brings:
- Donald Duck's Lucky Dime Caper
- Deep Duck Trouble starring Donald Duck
- Castle of Illusion
- Land of Illusion

The Asterix series is great, and I like the Ninja Gaiden SMS game, because it is completely different from the NES versions.
