Roy deleted the old "gouging much" thread, so here it is born anew.  It's too bad the old thread is gone, as it was filled with funnies and absolutely insane deals; I guess covering his tracks and hiding his hypocrisy was more important than preserving the laughs.

Thanks to Black & Blue: click here for a cached version of the old thread (click here to download a pdf version).

As previously posted, here's a mystery bundle of gaming goodies for a mere $64,816.32.  It was last up for the paltry sum of $39,000, so you best pull the trigger soon before it jumps into the six figure range.

In a similar vein, here's a new TG-16 for $1880.  If memory serves, it was previously listed for $1200 and then $1600.  Reverse psychology fail.

Btw, I'm not a fan of people being able to delete their threads/tracks. There was a time on here were my then-arch nemisis quoted one of my posts, highly edited, and then deleted my original so only his version existed.

I've said some dumb shit in the past. I'm not proud of it, but I'm not going to Ministry of Information it away. I grew, I learned, whatever. People of decent character have no need to censor their own past.

SignOfZeta

$12 shipped seems kind of low. $40 shipped is obviously too high. I admit I haven't bought any controllers recently though.

Either way, this is small stuff compared to $300 TG-16s, etc.

I think I better buy a PC Engine LT soon...before the market for the hugely overpriced low end crap catches up with the expensive and legitimately rare stuff and we are looking at $10,000 LTs. In all honesty, if Bonk 3, fucking BONK 3 is worth $150 or whatever to these people then a $650 LT looks like a real bargain. How long will it stay this way?

Dang. I really don't want to spend that much money on a third PC Engine system, but it may be now or never.

Roy The Sunderer

This stuff is insane. I picked a really bad time to get back into TG-16. It's getting to the point where it's hard to find even the common games at reasonable prices. When exactly did this trend start?
Geico saved 15% by switching to Chuck Norris.

SignOfZeta

Well, Magical Chase was $100 about 10 years ago. Games like Dungeon Explorer II and Godzilla were aways worth MSRP or more. Things started to get really stupid...not that long ago, really. Maybe 4-5 years ago? They got hella stupid just in the last two years.

While its a bad time to just start on TG-16, there has never been a better time for PC Engine. What the more frugal minded people do is buy all PC Engine stuff except for the dozen or so US games that have a lot text in them. There is zero point whatsoever in having a censored, case-less, US Bonk 3 HuCard for four times the price of a JP one, but you will always want a US version of Ys 1&2, Y's III, Neutopia 1 and 2, Dungeon Explorer 1 and 2, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Dragon Slayer...I'm forgetting a few here. It Came From the Desert...not much else. Most (all?) of the US exclusives, Darkwing Duck, Madden, can just be skipped totally. A US Ninja Spirit is (was?) cheaper than the JP version a lot of the times, so you might want a US version of that too.

All the shooters, the platformers, China Warrior, etc, just get JP versions. A large number of the best games didn't come out in the US at all. Ys IV, half the shooters, the entire Arcade Card library, and virtually all of the fighters, are JP only.

I had a ton of TG stuff back in 2003 or so.  When I sold all my stuff in 2005 to buy a house I didn't realize how much I'd regret it all later.  Just this year I've been trying to rebuild my TG collection.   Its unreal how much this stuff has  blown up in cost.  I'm just lucky I found a broken Duo I was able to repair.  That saved some cash.  But some of these games have gone absolutely nuts.
[Sun 23:29] <Tatsujin> we have hard off, book off, house off, sports off, baby off, clothes off, jerk off, piss off etc

geise

It sure as hell has!  The sad thing is that the expensive games are probably being bought by reseller after reseller after reseller.  With every time it's purchased it's going back up for sale at a higher price, to make a profit off of an already gouged price.

What he said.  There are only a few US titles that sell for big bucks, and only Dungeon Explorer II, Might & Magic III, and Beyond Shadowgate (which is US only anyway) are needed for the translations; hell, Godzilla and Exile: Wicked Phenomenon were maimed in translation and consequently better in PCE form, and the rest of 'em play the same regardless of region.  If one does want the US titles, with patience the bulk of the library can be had cheap (less than $20 per title, especially when buying in bulk).

Very true. This is how I've managed to get most of my TG-16 games. The games I keep for my collection end up costing less on average and I have no problem trading/selling the extras. Trying to snag individual, more uncommon games for decent prices can still be tricky.

Good prices can also be had at gaming conventions. I was able to snag some rare games like Bonk 3 CD and Neutopia II at prices well below market value at the last Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee.

Well Roy, the only (retro) gaming convention that will take place in the near future is again the Video Game Summit, which is where Turbo Fest 2011 will make another triumphant return.

I never heard about the one in Bridgeview, must have been a while back because I totally would have been there. :P

Those Bridgeview shows are probably ancient history by now. The only other upcoming show I could find info about is the Chicago Comic-Con this month from the 19th-22nd. There will most likely be gaming stuff there, but I've never gone so I don't know exactly how much.

Here is the text of the seller's message to me:
i doubt i will lose money, this sale went for 4 figures, lmao. theres no way that auction would have ended for what i sold it for. i couldnt pass up this deal. normally i wouldnt do that but this time this person REALLY wanted this stuff.

At least the seller had some sanity about it knowing full well that the auction wasn't worth that, though it is slimy (and against ebay policy) to do what they did.

4 digits for this lot?  What is going on here?  There are way too many of these large lots selling for high $ for it to be just one or two crazy buyers.

I can't imagine a re-seller would think this could earn a profit on that purchase price (even using pricing of buying every piece individually, you'd be hard pressed to spend $1000).  It just doesn't add up.

Anybody else having this stuff happen?

Someone pulled a copy of GoT I picked up for $26 that in the seller's opinion should have gone for much, much more.

He canceled the auction 3 minutes before close stating "I want to keep it"  :-s :-s

If he joins the forum, his userid should be SuperDouche2.

I guess I'd rather them cancel an auction than shill bid it up.  Either way its a bummer when it happens.

I also had a boxed PCE GT pulled (seller wouldnt respond to emails after he pulled it)

and I was bidding on the Boxed TGCD (seller stated boxed CD is "no longer available" but didn't say they were keeping it and didn't ask me for another offer (was a few days from closing.))

Quote from: henrycsc on 08/06/2010, 11:38 PMI've had a rash of auctions (4) that I was bidding on cancelled by different sellers in the past week.
This last seller actually admitted through the ebay messaging service that they sold the lot to someone who "REALLY" wanted it.
I hope you turned his ass in to eBay; they really hate it when somebody screws 'em out of their fees ($70-75 had it sold at $1000).

Mail 'em an air tight box.... after you've shat in it and topped it off with a bit of silane gas.  Surprise!

They of course get reported for pulling that shit. It's been happening to quite a few of us lately.

Man, that's crazy.  You gotta love the $4 shipping (maybe insurance is free in France or he's absorbing the cost, but if that's the case, why not absorb the $4 too?), plus the option of paying by bank wire transfer practically screams SCAM!

It's not on eBay, but it's definitely an attempt at gouging: clicky.  I've seen 'em both go on eBay for less than the bullshit prices he's quoting, not to mention he's padding his profit by saving eBay's fees ($15 or so on $100).  [-(
