tell me about those CD+G's you have.

Ok, so a CD+G is a CD plus graphics. I have seen some youtube video of what the display looks like and sounds like. I know old CD+G are meant to be played on a TG16 and the system even came boxed with a sample disc to try out.

My question is can you play a more modern CD+G on a TG16? Do the new CD+G need more memory to be played? Can I play a 2000 or later CD+G in my system? Let me know what CD+G you guys have no matter how cheesey you may think they are.

Also I'm wonderin about CDV discs. Will these work on a TG16? I'm guessing they wont since it is newer tech than TG16. But has anyone tried??... because I have seen some CDV discs that show some poor quality pics in a slideshow format.

CD+Gs are meant to be played on compatible systems, which includes the TG-CD (and Duo) and tons of other systems (CD-i, 3DO, Jag CD, etc.).

Yes, no, yes - respectively.  The CD+G standard is part of the regular CD standard and hasn't changed over the years.

They surely won't play, though not because it's a newer format (it came out in '87).  Perhaps you mean VCD, which came out in '93, but those won't play either.

The only CD+G that I have is the original pack in for the TG-CD.

I seem to remember a thread here about 2 years ago that listed every CD+G in existence.

I have 1 Little Feat CD+G for either "Dixie Chicken" or "Representing The Mambo" I don't remember and its under boxes right now.  The latter is kind of a crappy record because of the over-production and the graphics make no sense. Little Feat in general, however, is a killer band.

CD+G was a format that was invented to make audio CDs more "multi-media". It was widely hoped that it would lead to all sorts of cool artistic results, or at least subtitles for operas, but in the end all of that failed. What did succeed though (for better or worse) were CD+Gs aimed at the karaoke market. Those are probably still being made, they were a few years ago. The newest CG+G I've actually owned was the the Japanese 3" CD single of Fly in the Sky, the opening theme to G Gundam, something like 1993 or 1994. It isn't very good. The best one I've seen was Information Society's first album.

So anyway, the format is a format, so it doesn't matter when they were made, they'll play in any CD+G device. The TG-16/PC Engine, Saturn, 3DO, Sega CD and probably other systems all play CD+Gs. It isn't just a TG-16 thing. There are a lot of stand alone karaoke machines that play them, several laserdisc players (which can also play the LD+G format, which I've only seen in shops), and there were even add-on units.

There was actually some sort of sequel to CD+G that the Saturn can play, but I can't remember what it was called, and I've never seen one of these disks.

CDVs are hybrid 5" Compact Disc and Laserdisc. The audio format is standard CD, and the video format is standard Laserdisc. There is no way for an old game system to play the video portion of a CDV, but they can play the music. There were some decent CDVs made, but not many. Many of the ones made in Europe have rot because of defective pressing (I think moost European CDVs came from the same plant). I have one with Bubblegum Crisis music/video on it that is runs perfectly, made in Japan, obviously.

VCDs are an MPEG1 video format that the TG-16 would be able to play if it had the RAM and CPU for it, but it doesn't.

Thanks for clarifying that everyone.  They still seem to making CD+G's nowadays probably for the karaoke market. I have seen huge lots on ebay.

Yeah, I've seen them at department stores in recent years. I've often checked to see if any of them were actually worth buying, but they never are. Not only are the songs pretty terrible, but they are cover versions by studio musicians. The only "+G" features are going to be the lyrics at the bottom of the screen and...who knows WTF in the main portion.
