The Smithsonian is going to have a game exhibit next year and they left out the TG16. during the bit war era.  We all know that it started with the turbo and the Genny.  You can comment and let them know that they are screwing up a major part of gaming history.  THNX    http://www.artofvideogames.org/  go to the bottom of the page and click on the let us know what you think and let em have it!!!

Yeah, that is bogus, T-fan. For the Combat/Strategy Award nominees, that spot just screams for Military Madness. Urgh

I posted a comment on the page, hopefully the admins will approve it.

I replied as well.  I think the Smithsonian's exhibit should be called "Sponsored by Nintendo"

We obviously have a bias opinion here at pcenginefx but the turbo grafx did make a very large contribution to the video game world. It was the first CD system. So If we told that to the Smithsonian bastards they would have to put it in

What did we expect, seriously!

the Turbo has been ignorantly forgotten/misrepresented by the western gaming world for awhile now.

Watch them finally decide to mention it.  I can see it now.  A big sign that says

TURBO GRAPHIX-16
With a johnny turbo cardboard standee, the entire US setup, and Fighting Street running.

Misrepresented?  Do you remember NEC's bold "GAME OF THE MONTH" marketing plan that they pulled out during their fiercest months of competition?  Is history supposed to look back on Falcon, Drop Off, Battle Royale, Yo Bro, and Talespin with a smile?  Because those were like all the Turbo was coming out with each month.

And even worse, NEC's genius "GAME OF THE MONTH" marketing plan assured us that friggin' Battle Royale was the ONLY game we were getting that month.

I meant misrepresented today when people look back on the system.  They misspell the name, don't reference any of the good games, neglect the importance of it's CD addon, and never mention how great HuCards are.

Lots of hipster editorials gloss over it as a piece of crap.  Its definitely not a piece of crap!

Speaking of spelling the name wrong, I remember seeing the Duo for the first time at CES '92.  I knew about the TurboGrafx of course, but the combined thing was new.  And looking at the name emblazoned on the system.......

"They're calling it the TurboDud ?  They must not expect anyone to buy it."

The huge Gate of Thunder display was pretty incredible though.

I will investigate further, but here is a response in the comments from "Chris Melissinos" one of the curators(?):

QuoteJay, believe me when I say I understand. In several interviews I discuss the issues around having to work within limits (20 systems for this exhibition) and having to leave out systems I personally loved. The TG-16 was one of my favorite systems of all time. I remember the awesome music from Keith Courage when first fired up, even though the game was pretty bad. From shmups to Dracula X, the TG-16 was amazing for those of us who made up the passionate, yet small, community of fans.

Unfortunately, I had to pare down the list, no Apple II, Amiga 500, TG-16, 3DO, etc.

Sorry, but know that the TG-16 has a special place in my personal collection.

Chris Melissinos

So, I think that we should read the GODDAMN FAQ because, apparently, this exhibit had constraints and they were not trying to be exhaustive or all-inclusive.

Of course, I still submitted a comment about the TG-16! :)

If the TG-16 is an asterisk (and I'm not arguing otherwise), then what was game.com?

Seriously. I had never heard of it until the internets enlightened me many moons ago.

Still, if they wanted to do simply an art exhibit of video games they shouldn't have grouped it chronologically, by era. By grouping it as such, it gives a more of historical feel, when, according to the curator, it is not. I think it's totally misleading.

And anyone who sees the introduction of the CD medium on console systems as only a footnote in video gaming needs to have their head examined. It completely changed how games would be developed and contributed fully to the video game as an art form.

Precisely.  Its use of the CD allowed for voices, animation, cut scenes, and music the likes of which were rarely seen before and certainly not in such quantities; if that isn't advancing video game art with 'striking visuals, creative use of new technology, and influential artists and designers', then I don't know what is.  Even worse is their complete omission of arcade games; early on you went to the arcade to see cutting edge artwork and stayed at home for watered down ports and imitations, yet arcades apparently don't even merit a mention.  Now I understand not having room for everything, yet they found room for the Wii and the GameCube, neither of which are pushing the art envelope at all (Boom Blox, really?!?).

Plus, their selection of games is suspect.  Why include console ports of PC games (Dune, Command and Conquer, and Sim City), and are they really saying that console ports of arcade games were influencing anything?   Fuck 'em!  I refuse to vote on grounds that it's little more than a exhibit of "games that people really liked playing at home" - artwork be damned.

Yes, an "asshair" sums up its legacy nicely.

And you are correct--he should have fought for the Turbo, especially because it has more "popularity" now (via the recycling of video games on Virtual Console, XBOX, PSN, mobile devices, etc.) than the ColecoVision & Intellivision combined.

I believe the Saturn and Dreamcast, though, were far more popular (in their era), than the TG-16, though I could be wrong.

Anyway...

Only if you restrict your view to the US; if you measure popularity by worldwide system sales, then the PCE/Turbob beats 'em both by a hair.

CMilissinos that heads this whole thing is answering questions asked at their page.  He keeps mentioning this damn narrative for the exhibit, but doesn't really go into what it is.  I noticed a couple of your guys comments and it's sad he didn't include the Turbo and it's obviously (like others have said) not truely one of his favorites, cause it would've made the cut.  Not having a machine that started the whole CD for game medium is asinine.  I would gladly donate my TG-16 and add on to the Smithsonian to have it put in the exhibit.  I really do not get what narrative they're going for.

Yeah geise,  I have no idea what theu are going for either..  if its all about the art of video games .  Why limit it to 20 consoles?  If it was all about the art it would just be about the game from each era. What does a console have to do with art?  IMO they are doing for a popularity contest.  All they did was take the most popular systems and let people vote on it.  How sad is that?

Well I do understand where they are coming from.  They have limited space for the exhibit, and are only using US titles.  Also, they want to keep the more well known games so they can appeal to the broader audience.  That's what I gathered from the ramblings on the comment site.  I do have to give them credit for trying something like this though.  It's definitely not an easy task.  However, some games or systems not being entered is kind of baffling.  The Turbo is one point and not cause it's my favorite system.  Quite a few games like fucking CoD are in there twice, but not once did they ever mention Castlevania.  If they have limited space and only 240 games why use the same game twice.  Yeah none of those CV games have any artistic merit.  Plus it's not like CV was ever on the NES, Genesis, SNES, PS1, N64,  #-o (forget those two) PS2.  At least I saw they had Grandia 1 PS1 and Panzer Dragoon Saga.  So I give them a little bit of credit.  I hope they have other facts certain games though, like Grandia for being on Saturn first and actually running better.  Also they have Lunar SSS for PS1, and never have any mention on the Sega CD version.  I have no idea wtf they are trying to show in this exhibit.

Sales should make no damn bit of difference in being in the exhibit.  It's about showing video games as an art form.  I know they want more well known games so they can get people to go to the exhibit.  However, from what I've seen on the site though they have quite a few games that never made crazy sales.  They have Ikaruga for example.  Yeah it's not the DC original but they still have Ikaruga.

esteban

Here is the "impossible" task:

1) You must appeal to the mainstream, contemporary audience (lots of young folk who, through no fault of their own, are totally ignorant about most of the games/consoles of yore *and/or* casual gamers, who again, are ignorant of the breadth of video game world).

2) You must appeal to the Top 10, because, Lord Knows, even folks who are "savvy" about video games really only know (aka have experience with) the Top 10 across multiple platforms.

3) You must satisfy the sponsors of the event.

4) You must OBTAIN THE PHYSICAL ARTIFACTS.

5) You must fit everything into a limited physical space.

6) Upon satisfying #1-5, you may throw a few bones to the uber-nerds, like us.

IMHO:

1) So be it.
2) So be it.
3) F*ck. So be it.
4) Hmmmm, this is only true for the actual exhibit in the museum. There is no rule that you couldn't have HONORABLE MENTIONS (BONUS MATERIAL!) available for the virtual exhibit online. That's one of the nice things about the internetz.

5) See #4.

6) This exhibit could have attempted to appease nerdy folks by at least having "Honorable Mentions" and drawing from the wealth of titles available for the included platforms as well as the excluded platforms (including arcade and PC titles). Sure, we'd still complain about this second-citizen status, but at least the initiated viewer/attendee of the exhibit would have the option to delve deeper into the subject matter, should he/she choose to do so. I am perfectly happy with mainstream vehicles (Smithsonian) "opening the doors" to a deeper history. The niche fandoms need, and benefit from, opportunities like this: take a casual/mainstream person and get him/her even MORE interested in the history of video games.

NOTE: I can dream, goddammit.

NOTE: When I say "history", I mean both "history" and I mean "art", which is incidental. I know this exhibit has put "art" at the forefront, but let's not fool ourselves, this exhibit is heavy on BOTH.
