best CD based games

SO i just purchased a turbo duo-r, and was wondering what you guys think are the best games to get out there. Jap or US games, doesnt matter. I really enjoy shumps, beat'um'ups, and fighting games. Also RPGs as well.

Spriggan is a great way to acquaint yourself with the PC Engine CD-ROM. It is part of the Aleste series of games that includes M.U.S.H.A. and Robo Aleste, and is my favorite entry in the series. Spriggan was my very first CD-ROM title for the PC Engine (Download was my first Hu Card and is another great cheap shooter), and can be had for around $40.

Yeah, what they said. I also really enjoy Star Parodier, though its "cuteness" may not be your style. (You can play as a spaceship, Bomberman, or a flying PCE) It's a hoot.

Dragon Slayer is a damn fine RPG. Better than Cosmic Fantasy 2 IMHO. The Ys and Legend of Xanadu games are awesome action RPGs and Spriggan Mark 2 and Sapphire (assuming you have an arcade card) are pretty cool shooters. If you are interested in puzzle games, Splash Lake and Puyo Puyo are lots of fun. Rondo of Blood and the Thunder series probably go without saying.

Rayxanber 2 and 3 are great games that can occasionally be found on the cheap. The 4-in-1 CD is a must own too.

great shmups :Gate4in1<- Must own. 4 great games, one usually low price, Lords or Thunder, Star Parodia, Terraforming, and Gradius II

Beat 'em ups are harder to come by- go for Riot Zone first (can be had for around $30 or less) and then save up for Downtown Nekketsu and Double Dragon II (Best version of DD2 IMHO- it's like a 16-bit CD tribute to the NES classic!)

for fighting games, its best you get an arcade card- with an arcade card you can get Fatal Fury 2 and special, Art of Fighting, World Heroes 2, and even a Kabuki (FEOE) Fighter. With that arcade card you then could find a cheap bootie of Sapphire from one of the guys around these forums (Sapphire is one of the BEST shooter experiences on the Turbo)

For RPG's I pretty much agree with everyone here- the US releases of Cosmic Fantasy 2, Exile (1 and 2), Ys, Dragon Slayer, Dungeon Master Theron's Quest, and Dungeon Explorer pretty much can't be beat. If you get through all of those go for imports of Ys IV, Xanadu, Gulliver Boy, and one of the best games ever made- Emerald Dragon!

and that is just for starters.....
You have a lifetime of gaming ahead of you, just be patient and the greatness will come knocking on your doorstep.... usually dressed in a UPS getup!

Considering it's infamous difficulty imbalance, I'm not sure that Exile 2 is a good recommendation. The first game is terrific though.

If you like action/platform games with ladies you can get the Valis games for cheap. I like the games. The music and cutscenes are great. Valis 2 is the weakest one, but I still like it. Valis Phantasm Soldier is the last one made, but the story is actually the first game in the series. So it goes:

Maybe I need to give Cosmic Fantasy 2 another shot. I played it in HS and thought it was awesome, then I played it in college and thought it was not near as good as I remembered. I didn't think it aged terribly well, but I haven't played it in probably 8 years.

It has some balance issues, I remember trying to restart it a few years ago when I changed Duo's and it being unforgiving difficult early on. I enjoyed the game overall though. It's not as well made of a game as Dragon Slayer, but it's a far better presented game than Dragon Slayer.

I need to play through Cosmic Fantasy 2 again. I beat it in 94 and haven't touched it since. I don't really remember anything about that game. Not that it's unmemerable, but it was so long ago. I liked the game back when i first played it, but man have some monster encounters.

There's no character portraits either, around a quarter the screen is taken up by the status bar. The character sprites aren't as nice, nor are the environments as detailed. Dragon Slayer has much better music, balance, and general design though.

I don't know if I totally agree with that. They are very different, and I don't know if I'm just speaking from a prospective of a dude that loves Falcom- and this game has a bit of an Ys feel to it, BUT they each have a special charm to them.

From a gameplay standpoint, Dragon Slayer has seamless transitions from roaming to battle sequences, while CF2 has terrible random battles that can completely throw off your direction when roaming about.

I would say DS has far better gameplay and playability while CF2 has slightly better presentation.

thanks for all the tips guys. I am getting a copy of cosmic fantasy 2 with my purchase of a duo-r. I will def be getting exile (im trying to collect all working designs games). So as far as platformers go. what are the must haves?

I agree with that for the most part.
I think that DS has better gameplay, engine design and music. I think CF 2 has a much better story, dub, artwork, localized writing, graphics and overall presentation.

I'm not terribly familiar with the PC Engine library, but at least as far as US releases go I think you are better off with HuCards for platformers. New Adventure Island and Bonk's Revenge are my favorites. As far as CD games go, I guess the Valis games have quite a bit of platforming. There's Bonk 3 CD as well, which isn't a bad game, but good luck finding it.

Realy good luck on trying to get them all ever since wd went out of business any thing they have publish,went up in value.Also i have to warn you about exile wicked phenomenon if you ever go afther it.When wd localize exile wp they had a glitch wich up the games diffculty making it frustrating to finsh.

Wonderboy III: Monster Lair is a great platformer/shooter hybrid and a damn fine game.

Other notable CD platformers:

Faussete Amour is a cool, unique title with an interesting soundtrack.

Taito's Bubble Bobble II: Rainbow Islands is a virtually arcade-perfect port (probably the only one in existence, and certainly the only one of its era).

Shape Shifter separates the boys from the men. I must be a man, because I fucking love it.

Everyone knows about Shadow of the Beast.

I'm a huge fan of cartridge-based Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure, but if you're really only going for CD games Bonk 3 CD is more or less the same, with a slightly inferior (in my opinion) redbook soundtrack.

A re-titled Wonderboy V, released on the system as Dynastic Hero is a worthy purchase as long as you don't overpay for the U.S. version. It is the direct sequel to the 4th Wonderboy game, Dragon's Curse.

Monster Lair is definitely cool, I guess I always considered more of a shooter. Shaper Shifter is better than I initially gave it credit for, but its platforming elements aren't the high point of that game.

Sticking to hueys only would make you miss out on Camp California, Shadow of the Beast, Prince of Persia, Dynastic Hero (pricey but good), Exile and Exile: Wicked Phenomenon (half RPGs, half platformers), Shape Shifter, Valis II, and Valis III; including PCE games makes it even sillier, as few huey platformers are even close to the awesomeness of Dracula X.

That's fair. I wasn't trying to say he should play only chip games, I was trying to say he should play chip games in addition to CD games.

I guess part of the problem is genre definitions. When someone says "platformer" I think Bonk, Mario and Sonic style games. I don't think Exile or Dracula X, though I freely admit both have platforming elements. At some point the definition is vague enough that we might as well be referring to "side scrollers".
