I NEED YOUR HELP GUYS
I think my ps3 just kicked the bucket. I was playing U3 and it just shut off on my. and the red light just kept blinking, i tried to turn it on, and i saw a yellow light for a second, then it would just turn off again. I turned it off by hitting the power switch in the back, and when i turned it back on i help the eject button, and was able to get my copy of u3 out of it. But when i try to turn it on now, it just shows the green light, then the yellow light, then it just blinks red. If someone can let me know what i can try to do to repair it that would be appreciated

ParanoiaDragon

Yikes, that doesn't sound good.  I know I've had a couple of times when my system tries to shut down, but doesn't.  What you're describing though, doesn't sound good.  I think there was a firmware quite some time ago that was causing some problems, but I'll assume you're all up to date on the firmware's.  I actually like to atleast wait a day or 2 before getting new firmware, just incase there is some kind of problem.  All I can say it talk to Sony & see what they say, but maybe somebody else here can figure out what's going on??

^ i looked it up. its basically what plagued the xbox 360 with the red ring of death. ps3 version is called the yellow light of death. basically the heat sync stopped doing its job, so now there's an issue with the solder on the board. I would call sony and pay for a fix, but i have a Japanese ps3, so they won't touch it, they would want me to send it away to japan for repair. so I;m going to attempt to fix it myself tomorrow. Wish me luck guys

Oh for the days when you could just turn a PlayStation on its side to make it work again.

So do you have one of the original PS3 systems... the backwards compatible one? As my buddy had to retired his as the heat was doing a number on his board it seamed like every month. The newer ones are much more durable. So my buddy got a new slim one.. works great but when she heats up sometimes you hear the plastic "pop" expand on the case... there cookers!!!

I thought sure my '06 60gb model would die playing MW3 the other night.  The fan was working overtime!  I really hope it doesnt die on me :(
[Sun 23:29] <Tatsujin> we have hard off, book off, house off, sports off, baby off, clothes off, jerk off, piss off etc

munchiaz

Its not a backwards compatible model. It is a fatty 40 gb white japanese model

ParanoiaDragon

I've often thought about getting one of those laptop fans to plug into my PS3 to help cool it off, has anone ever tried that?  I have ye old 60 GB model, I'd prefer it not burn out on me if I can help it, I do sometimes play PS2 games on it if I can't get them to rip properly on my PS2.

i was able to fix it. I reflowed the solder using a heat gun, and applied new thermal paste to the cpu and gpu. I suggest you guys with the old models look up how to do it. It seems like its only a matter of time until the thermal paste dries up and the heat sync stops doing its job

Samurai Ghost

Sorry to get off topic, but it makes you think about how well-built the old game consoles are when you can play games on a 20+ year old system and it still works like a charm while newer systems seem to kick to bucket after only a couple years.

Samurai Ghost

Yeah I've got a few busted ones, but the ones which are still trucking after all of these years really stood the test of time! Basically anything with moving parts is bound to fail at some point, which is why I really love all the cart/card based systems.

munchiaz

^ indeed. even though i fixed it i picked up one my friend won in a raffle. a 120GB slim for $100. My original will only come out when i need to play a Jap ps1 games (its a jap ps3 if you were wondering)

This!

And this is also why I won't pay a dime for a 360, PS3 or any other system that will come out in the future. I'm a classic gamer and damn proud of it! 8)

^ you should play Nier. It is such an awesome and under appreciated game. the game play is a bit repetitive, but the story, and especially the music is some of the best this generation IMO

I enjoyed it so far i just recently finshed dark souls got %100 in it finally, one of the most addictive arpg i've ever played.Btw ever try (3D Dot Game Heroes) ? It takes a retro style of grahpics done in 3d fun stuff there for a PS3 exclusive.

Also i do miss cartridge based console in this day and age.No load times to mess with and far more reliable but i doubt the market would ever return to that.

Well, in a way, portables have kinda returned to carts.  The Vita uses some sort of SD type card, rather then the UMD's that the PSP used.  And yeah, I'm loving my PS3, the Uncharted games are great, 3D Dot Game Heroes, the upcoming Jak & Daxter collection, Red Faction 3 & 4, the 2 downloadable Bionic Commando's, DC Universe Online, the Sly series, the Ratchet & Clank series, War for Cybertron, Batman Arkham series, Borderlands, the InFamous series, the Marvel Ulimate Alliance series, the Spiderman games, the Metal Gear Solid series, Mirror's Edge, Nier, Prototype, Tomb Raider series...probably more I'm forgetting.

Ahhhh yes I remember the days of pulling on the controller and the whole system comes flying off the shelf. Yes your gam would reset but they was made DURABLE. My dad once threwmy NES up against the wall cause I wasn't aloud to play it. The case chipped but it still worked lol.
Welcome to Prime Time B!tch

Dark Fact

I wonder if anyone here took a baseball bat to their NES to see how durable it is? :-s

I have one of the original models, the guy selling it on Ebay said that some of them had power supplies that were prone to overheating, so he replaced those in the ones he was selling and put new thermal paste in etc. I have never had a problem in the 2 years or so I've had it and it's seen a lot of use. The only problem I've had is freezing and some lag on games like Skyrim and Fallout NV, but I'm pretty sure thats the games.
