Yep.  It is.  I mean, collectors like to do stupid shit that doesn't make sense (Buy games, don't play them), so, why not do something nonsensical that doesn't affect anyone but themselves instead.

and it also gives the rest of us some entertainment at their expense.

Where do you hail from anyways, KingofGames.

King of Games is a mighty big claim here.
This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

KingofGames

Yeah, it was a nickname I was given from my co-workers at GameStop. Started with Yu-Gi-Oh, then converted to King of Games. I had a solid collection for a 16 year-old with a part-time job. I remember saving up my paltry paycheck and selling some stuff to import a PC Engine Duo with a copy of Akumajo Dracula X: Chi No Rondo. Cost me around $350 shipped, but it was worth every penny. Still one of my all-time favorite games. Damn, I can hear that soundtrack now! Sooo good! But that was so long ago. I ended up selling it to buy another gaming dream of mine, a Neo Geo AES. Of course, that soon went so that I could own something else. I wish I had unlimited resources. I would keep everything that came into my possession.

Arkhan Asylum

Sounds like a janky nickname.  Not surprised, considering it came from a GameStop.

At least you probably aren't the same as "GameKing", who is one of the most retarded resellers I have ever seen.

Believe me, when I do resell, it isn't motivated by greed. Up until this past year, I was working part-time. I'm in a much better place financially, but I've always had to sacrifice items from my collection to gain new pieces. In the past three months, I've spent thousands of dollars on stupid collectible gaming shit that I'd love to keep. However, I realize how ridiculous it is. Along with that copy of Soldier Blade, I'm selling a copy of Little Samson on the NES that I paid $550 for. I don't want to get caught in the trap. Would I love to keep Soldier Blade? Hell ya. But unfortunately, I see dollar signs every time I look at it. It sucks, but it's the nature of collecting, at least for me. The more I have, the more I want.

Arkhan Asylum

If you're broke why the fuck are you paying 550$ for little Samson?

I think you should rephrase it to

"I've stupidly spent thousands of dollars on collectable gaming shit".

You're not really collecting.  You're reselling.  Collecting implies keeping things.  You're just buying things for idiotic prices, reselling them, and moving on to the next thing that gives you a boner.

Etc. etc.

Maybe you should stick to emulators and stop fucking up the market for everyone else.

Also, your sob-stories are a waste.  When I was still in highschool, I bought a Turbo CD while working part time, among other stuff.

I agree, but sometimes people buy/resell/buy again/etc, just to get a psychological high kind of like gambling in casinos and the like. They don't really care how much they spend, only that it's within reason because they know (or think) the monetary loss is temporary, and hope they get back all of what they made and then some.

I wonder how many guys are watching this with $$ in their eyes, thinking "let's see, I can get $100-150 for each game, $200 for Soldier Blade, $300 for the deck, plus $100 for the Turbobooster.  I'll be rich, I tell you!  Rich!
Twenty pages later, I'm right on all counts except I underestimated this parasite's greed by a few hundred bucks.

Christ, listen to his sob story about being broke (ethical appeal) and then his life story about saving for PCE Duo and how much he loves Drac X and how he would keep everything if he could (emotional appeal).  This is some serious VoyBegas bullshit.

Let's see... stupid nickname... worked at gamestop when he was sixteen... I'm guessing twenty-year-old fuck with a beard.

I should turn the box for Soldier Blade into a crown. Now that's certainly a worthy crown for a king (of games). I think I'd rather go swimming in the pool of money I'm going to collect from selling it, to be honest.

It's one thing to resell stuff as much as you do, but another thing to gloat and brag about it. That's what is causing everyone else to flame you. Unless you like the attention. Keeps you going :P

Not what I wanted to write for my first post, but here goes:

This thread is so full of butt hurt, it's hillarious. Wah! TG games are going up in price - let's all get mad and take it out on everyone who doesn't have enough forum cred (noobs, resellers, collectors, people with spending money, theives of childhoods, murderers lol).

I've been lurking here for over a year as I've been a stalwart advocate of the TG16 since it first was released in north america and I was really excited to find a community of people who have the same passion - but the sheer vitriolic mob mentality expressed in this thread makes this otherwise awesome site feel like a clubhouse for angry cliquey TG elitests who lack even a basic understanding of free market principals. And then to whine about hipsters LOL!

I LOVE ebay! I spent $250 on a boxed Soldier Blade last year (or was it $340?) - guess that means I'm an impatient idiot (because waiting 18 years to get a game I really wanted is the very definition of impatient and frivilous). I spent $150 on a boxed Ghost Manor (ya, that was me) and about $120.00 on a boxed Jackie Chan. I'm not going to waste time telling you how hard it is to find this stuff where I live and how many good auctions are not available to people outside the continental US or even share my sob rags to middle class childhood story about getting 2 games a year, but keeping them in mint condition (yes, CIB lol) until this very day..

Hi. I'm OrangeArmy. Longtime TG16 fanatic and north American CIB HuCard collector and I'm proud to announce I'm doing my part to inflate HuCard prices. I'm taking this stuff out of the market permanently while I can afford it, and I fricken love it. If you're reading this, I'm willing to pay $100 of my hard earned cash for a CIB super star soldier, $200 for a minty CIB Cadash. Please, take advantage of my stupidity! Popularity contests were never really my thing anyways...

Hey OrangeKoolaid, newsflash: All forums for all consoles/computers have the same thing:

Actual fans, tired of seeing stuff go for retarded, over inflated prices.

Why?

Because some of the buyers are people who don't know any better and think eBay is the only place to find the stuff.  It pushes people away from trying the system out because everything on eBay is so obnoxiously priced.

We only take it out on people who are fucking up the market.

Noobs are one thing.  Its great when they show up looking to game, and have fun here.

What really sucks are n00bs that show up and turn out to be dipshit collectors or resellers.

KingofGames just outed himself in this thread.  He's not a real gamer.

Someone in the market for a complete copy of Soldier blade is not a gamer. They are a collector. Buy a HU-card, buy a jp HU-card, buy a Wii, or play it free through PC. If you don't want to pay a premium on cardboard and paper, don't. You have many options.

It could go both ways. Some are satisfied with just having the hucard, others want at the very least, the case/manual included. Others want the outer box (complete). Doesn't mean one isn't a gamer for wanting the complete package and the others are.

Hi Arkan,

Nice to meet you. Your posts are always funny and entertaining, even when you're just parroting some of the other butt hurt economicly ignorant drones on here. I guess I have to accept that game collector is the new wall street speculator. Now I know how the Jews feel. I'm not a fan of resellers, but I don't lose sleep over them and I'm certainly not going to post endlessly on how they're ruining my hobby. That's like posting 100 posts over 3 months being angry about the weather. Who needs the high blood pressure or the ulcers?

I love ebay because it gives me an actual chance to find stuff. I don't have the connections a lot of you good ole boys round here seem to have and after years of comming up empty handed at pawn shops, garage sales, flea markets etc, it is incredible just to be able to have a fair shot at owning some complete titles. Sure, if I layed low on these forums, built up my "cred" wracking up hundreds of puff posts in top ten threads, not calling people out for acting like elitist douche bags, and pretended not to be a collector, I could probably have made a few nice trades or buys in the wtb thread. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Some of you people remind me of the Vampires vs the goths in south park. You know what? Burn down the hot topic, don't let it take your soul. Burn down the hot topic. And take control.

Hey Arkum, were you a Nickelback fan before it was uncool to be a Nickelback fan?

Welcome to the forums OA. I don't know what the hell a "stalwart advocate of the TG16" is supposed to be, but if you truly have been building your collection slowly since 1989 (unlikely, considering your recent ebay purchases) then I don't really have a problem with you.

You just accused everyone of a lot of things, but it's only really me, Arkhan, and a couple others ripping into these guys. If you've got a problem with anyone you should be specific, because if you go over to the raffles or the repair forum or virtually any other thread outside of Fighting Street and Gouging Much, you'll see a completely different side to the people around here (but hey, if you've been lurking for a year, you already know that!).

I don't know. I used to keep my mouth shut and try to empathize or even defend dickbags like KG while everyone else, even the mods, would attack them. Things would get out of control, threads would be locked, and time after time I realized that the guy with the inflated prices in the sales thread, or the noob collector, or the reseller, really was a jerk and I was wrong to give them the benefit of the doubt. Despite their lip service to the community, the most anyone like KG has ever given in the way of research, or game advice, or troubleshooting, or lively discussion has been posting pictures of a collection.

Anyway, I don't really know what you're complaining about. Like Arkhan said, ebay bitch threads like this are par for the course if you've ever been on a video game forum before. You should see what happens to the idiots who pull this reseller crap at smaller communities like the 3DO forum.

One more thing - capitalism is great, but even economists acknowledge that the "free market" doesn't exist outside of dismal, ninth-grade textbooks and republican primaries.

and, OrangeArmy, the point is, seeing the market take a giant dump due to retarded resellers over the years is really awful.  It happens in every scene.  The Commodore 64 scene is pretty bad too.  It sucks to see it because it makes it hard for people who will actually PLAY this stuff.

also, Nickleback was never good.  Their CD sounds like 1 really long song.  it blows.

Gamers want to play, yes.  Also, some gamers want to have the entire experience which includes the manual.  They are entitled to it, really.

Ever try playing Ultima or Wizardry 1 without a manual?  Good luck.

Stalwart advocate meaning back in the day I was the only kid I knew who owned a TG and ever defended it's awesomeness, tried to promote it and expose my friends to it. I always wished there were other kids around with one so we could trade games, talk about how great it was and what not. Finding a whole site with NEC console fans blew my mind!

I completely understand the scourge of resellers coming in here and basically gaming the well intentioned, often generous fan community to make a quick buck, and I agree that shit is LOW, but not every new guy fits this bill.

I don't understand the hate for collectors. Most of us are gamers too and in my case I'm not interested in sealed. Games are for playing. That said, I kept my 8 original games I've owned since childhood in immaculate condition (box and all). I used to go to the game store and study the box art (of all the titles I'm finally able to add to my collection after all these years) for what felt like hours, wondering what each game was like and which one I would choose to be my Christmas present. Looking at those boxes, I imagined and played each one in my head many times over. I enjoy the nostalgia and sense of accomplishment that holding a boxed TG game I've finally earned and added to the shelf brings. If I had the money 10 years ago to get this stuff cheap, believe me; I would have.

I've been called out in this thread many, many times for past purchases (Soldier Blade, Neutopia 2, Ghost Manor, Shockman) but those games were worth what I payed for more reasons than (I'm retarded, I'm a trendy retro hipster, I got mommy's credit card, I'm a reseller, I'm cobbling together a collection with my student loan) so I feel like a lot of the hate I see over and over in here is misdirected and partly a symptom of crowd mentality. If I'm going to get flamed before I even post because I'm a 'collector' then fuck you all, you elitist dicks - is kind of the mentality in my first post.

Is that specific enough?

Edit: I'm Not a Nickelback fan either but I don't understand the hate. It's not their fault the radio played them to death and it's not their fault most of their fans tend to be douchebags.

Having the games from when you were 8 doesn't count.  You obviously played the shit unless you were some OCD kid with 8 games that you just stared at and never touched.

Collectors are people who just horde shit, and if you ask them about it, the farthest they can tell you about it is "ITS WORTH $$$$$"

No, a real gamer would stick with the PC Engine! That way you can find complete copies of the exact same game with better cover art for around 15% of the cost and play them on the actual hardware. See this minty copy of Soldier Blade? Got this shipped to me last week for around $30. It's practically brand new. How did I get it so cheap? I knew where to look and I waited for a good deal to pop up.

I could see why you'd want the US version if you are nostalgic for the US box art or whatever, but the game is exactly the same. And screw the virtual console; sorry to break it to you but paying for emulation is like paying someone to let you breath air. Just download the ROM for free if you are going to go that route. Or save all the money you'd be spending on the VC and buy a flashcart for your TG-16 or whatever other system you like. Or buy a modded Xbox and load it with every ROM for every game system up until the 32-bit era and be done with it. You'd never have to buy another game again!

Or buy a modded Xbox and load it with every ROM for every game system up until the 32-bit era and be done with it. You'd never have to buy another game again!
cant say i agree with that approach..  i dont want to jump on the piracy band wagon, but if you cant afford the us version then BUY the jap or virtual console versions.. Flash carts are great for those of us who OWN the game and cant be bothered getting them out of the cupboard when we have to switch to a different one.  point being WE OWN THE GAME :)

OrangeArmy - OK, I understand we're you're coming as far as collecting. IMO, the prices are generally prohibitive these days, but CIB does have a certain appeal if you find it cheap and if you grew up with this stuff.  Personally, I'll pay an additional, I don't know, 20% for a game in its box if I'm feeling nostalgic.  For example, I recently bought Dragon Warrior 4 loose because I'm not going to pay $100 for a box, but I grabbed Hillsfar CIB for $30 because it's a $25 game and I'm a D&D nut. Also, taking stuff off the market permanently is cool if you're going to play it - the purpose of this thread is to bitch about those who do the opposite (reselling and/or not playing).

I gotta say though, it's a really funny coincidence that you've not only happened to buy multiple ebay listings that we've bitched about in this thread, but that you've been lurking, reading, and internalizing our complaints until you finally blew up on your first post.  It's a strange way to say "hi", but now that you're here, go post in some of the other threads!

Nickleback sucks, but I don't have any hard feelings otherwise.

OK, I was debating all day while reading this at work as to if I should post in this argument. However, several things made figure I say something.
@OrangeArmy :
First of all, welcome to the forum. Second, I noticed you say that you do not have the "time to build cred" at this forum. I really do not think any cred is needed at all. Simply asking at the sales thread made it abundantly clear how painful some of the prices are on ebay by contrast. As for the cred part I got 2 sapphire boots for free(one for me and one for my friend) with literally 1 post on the day I registered here. Yes, people here are that fucking awesome. As for the reason people are so miffed at the fact that prices are insanely high on ebay, one need to look no farther than good sellers like Samurai Ghost for a quick comparison. Every single sale he does here is done with being considerate in mind. I had to do 0 "cred" crap. I asked, people here offered and so far every single deal I have done here makes ebay look weak by comparison.

@King of Games :
While I understand that making profit can be a motivation for people looking to do a quick buck, there is a line where morality should take charge after a certain point.  Now when it comes to the gouging portion of this argument, I am no one to judge. Just keep in mind that you are doing a disservice to gamers everywhere by driving the prices of games up (this also goes to people that buy shit at ridiculous prices)
Good Sellers (in my experience)
Samurai Ghost, Keith Courage, Bernie, tggodfrey, bartre (hoping to add more to this list soon)

People who are just plain Awesome:
BlueBMW (to this day i thank you for hooking me up with Sapphire and getting me started with collecting PCE games)

Quote from: OrangeArmy on 04/23/2012, 06:36 PMStalwart advocate meaning back in the day I was the only kid I knew who owned a TG and ever defended it's awesomeness, tried to promote it and expose my friends to it.

Crowd mentality LMAO.....you've been lurking here over a year, and haven't figured out that people say what they feel, and have the brains to think for themselves?

"If I'm going to get flamed before I even post because I'm a 'collector' then fuck you all, you elitist dicks - is kind of the mentality in my first post."

It's not because you're a collector, as much as you defend overpaying due to being stupid/impatient, and respond like a mongoloid 3rd grader. ;)
Just becasue you don't value the item, or the box for that matter any more than some number you have in your head, dosn't mean I over payed. Sure, I payed a lot for an uncommon luxury item but then you could say anyone who's ever shelled out for any luxury item is stupid and impatient. I've seen a boxed Soldier blade appear on ebay exactly twice in the last 3 years. That's partly because I'm on Canadian ebay so I have access to a lot less of the stuff than an American would. Anyways, you do yourself a disservice writing me off as an impatient idiot. I'm always looking for the mythical reasonably priced TG16 games, but I'm not going to wait for ever. Hate to break it to you but this pricing bubble is not going to burst. Its a simple supply/demand scenario. What is a better indicator of an objects value than a 99 cent auction? Oh, right...the price in your head lol

nectarsis

Seeing as there's nothing stopping you from using the US Ebay, your point is moot.

Funny this constant "bubble will never burst" is ignorant..at best.  EVERY pricing bubble bursts at some point, plus many of us have GREAT collections (including OMGZ SOOOOOOOOOO PRICEY RAREZ) without overpaying (and yes on ALL the titles you listed you got hosed $ wise).

Prices in in our heads??   Seems like someone is desperately clinging to Nintega logic "I NEVER find deals/you guys are SO lucky/these prices just don't exist" etc. etc.

P.S.  If you pretty much stick with Ebay you're missing out on many, many, many good deals.

Alright, pretty sure NecroPhile scowls every time I post in here, but it's been long enough that I'll pipe up again. First, yes, watch this board and you'll find great deals, hard time find items, and stuff you simply can't get anywhere else. Second, there's a hierarchy in my mind of people that buy these games. In order of respect:

a) Old school fans with a deep love of the system who actually play the games they buy
b) New school fans with a deep love of the system who actually play the games they buy
c) Old school fans with a deep love of the system who collect who buy the games, but rarely, if ever play their collection
d) Resellers.

Anyway, I've got nothing but respect for (a) and (b). Truthfully, I don't care what you guys pay for a game, I'm just happy to see people enjoying the system. (c) I respect, but I can understand the disdain for. You are pulling games out of circulation and that sucks. (d) we've got problems. If the only thing you care about is flipping a title you got a couple months ago for a 10x profit, you suck. You are just inflating the price of games.

Sadly I've been more (c) than (a) recently, but I'm turning that around. I've recently picked up some incredibly awesome PCE and US titles I've not played before and I'm really enjoying them. The past couple months I've been weak on actually playing the games I own though. I'm not proud of that.

EDIT: I haven't given up on LoX either! :D

What stopped me from using US ebay in the past has been international shipping restrictions. A lot of the nice turbo autions and especially quick catch bins are only open to continental US states excluding Hawaii and Alaska. I've recently found a great package forwarder but there's still a surcharge to consider.

PCE intimidates and is alien to me. Never got into emulators or wiiware and I still play on my original 23 year old console with one I found on clearence for $20 in the mid nineties on hand for back up. I'm having fun slowly finding the 50 or so US HuCards I want to replay or experience for the first time in my library (TV sports and the like, no thank you). I have no experience with the CD stuff never owning one or knowing anyone with one and thus never playing one. The cost of entry has always been high and so I have to admit I've never played it. I really want to, but I'm a patient man and there's a lot of other great game systems that need to be played also.

Necro, sorry for derailing your thread.

One of the last copies of US Soldier Blade sold here with Hu card and manual for $60 so you'r $300 copy is some pretty expensive cardboard :P

True, but this is a close knit community where fans look out for each other as opposed to an environment representative to all consumers for whom the barriers to entry are location, membership and trust. Were that game to be posted on ebay at a 99 cent auction open to the entire world market, it would fetch a great deal more.

Sure, it would. But a few of us would rather just sell our extra games for a reasonable price directly to other fans then to someone who will just take the same game and sell it to a reseller, who will sell it to a reseller, drive up prices, etc. If you stick strictly to eBay you can probably make more money, but this is a PC Engine/TG-16 fan site, not a How to Make Money on eBay site, so a lot of us care more about the community and actual gaming than making an extra $20 or whatever on a game. I'm not trying to say that making money selling games is necessarily a bad thing, but you're not going to much of a positive reaction on here detailing how much money you made flipping a game you bought a few weeks ago.

So far every game you've shown to prove your point people pay dumbass prices for cardboard are old NES games when every kid including myself tossed the box. So the few that did survive are rare. But TG16 boxes aren't rare to me. In fact I gave my Shockman cardboard to my kid to cut up for a collage. I didn't care I know I could have made a $100 off it but to me its just cardboard.
