10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

So thats where that went, it was there 2011 at the Retro Gaming Convention in Portland but not 2012. Wasn't sure what it was then and still don't know what it is now. lol

Bernie

Yeah, really... wth is that?  The video, I cannot explain..  Is it supposed to look messed up?

it's a circuit bent TG16, that means it got castrated to make some fancy hipster musics.

hah as soon as I saw that I came here to see if there would be more info.  idk, i think it's awesome. Circuit Bent 80's electronics can be fun to mess around with.

I uh... watched the youtubes on that auction.  I'm trying to figure out what part is awesome... lol.  I can see slowing down the clock would be a good cheat, but the rest?  I'm just lost.  The hardware itself looks cool, though.
Well in a video game playing context, it is useless as this is not meant to enhance that experience.   But when it comes to art (sound art, video, performance art, etc), this modified system becomes a unique vehicle to use the graphics from TG16 games as the basis for an art piece.  As someone who not only loves retro video games, but also has a passion for glitchy art installations, this modified system is very exciting to me.

...but not for $499, lbr.

also, if you search around the internet for circuit bent items, you'll find that it is fairly common for toy keyboards and misc 80's electronic toys to have been manipulated outside of their original intended use.  It is not always for artistic purposes, sometimes it's just for fun, and other times it is to enhance the original experience of using the equipment (i.e the pxl-2000 pixelvision camera).

In the experimental music community, it is also common to see musicians tinkering with circuit bent casio keyboards, guitar pedals, or the ever popular Speak And Spell.  I'm starting to sound like wikipedia, so I'll shutup now!  8)

Heheh, yeah, for $499 you could pick up an standard turbografx with those games and some psychoactive party favors so you could enjoy the circuit bent experience at will without any hardware mods.

I think the original Gameboy is really popular for this synth whatever. Not sure why.

Seeing that poor booster hacked up like that makes my cry inside a little...

Obfuscate

I have a studio and play and make electronic music (used to be a Rave promoter and DJ) and you could do some cool things with this in a Live PA or in sampling. The video doesn't do anything for me.

I know, right? I nominate elseven for post of the year! About made beer come out my nose when i read that.
I have to agree that post was brilliant lol.

SignOfZeta

I'm semi-hip to the whole chip tunes/circuit bending scene, but this thing is way overpriced.

PCEngineHell

I saw this thing this morning. He has done the same thing to a super famicom, xeye, and other stuff. Just meh, whatever. His stuff, his money, but what a shame.

TheClash603

The system looks really cool with all those wires coming out of it, in a Frankenstein kinda way.

...then I watched the video and it was terrible.  The scrambled video and terrible sounds I heard were awful.

I went to a pretty good digital art museum in Cleveland a few years ago and this thing wouldn't have been allowed in the door.

no shit, cleveland has a digital art museum? was it connected to the art museum in university circle, or is it something else entirely?  just curious as I'll prob be traveling there in a month or so.

It was about four years ago when I went and it appears the museum is closed?  I forget the name of the place, but I remember it was on Carnegie St.  I know this because I had to stop and ask directions and I was corrected for not saying car-NEG-eee.

Sorry to get your hopes up.  Art must not pay the rent.

Arkhan Asylum

This thing is the result of hipster dumbfucks trashing good hardware to be hipster dumbfucks.

These are the kind of people that turned the whole chiptune thing into an over-arped retard fest of songs that all sound the same.

FUCK EM.  PLAY TURBOB OR GTFO.
This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

Now I've seen everything... So, he randomly soldered wires around, somehow managed not to destroy it from functioning at all, and now he's willing to part with it for only $499 ?? "Circuit bent" indeed! Yeah, somebody needs to get bent alright...

Lets hope you never do again. EVER.

Ouch, that video hurt.  He just needs to pull out the turbochip and blow on it some.

I am tempted to use the BIN so I can replace my toilet with this thing.

Wow, what a waste.
That TG looks like it's on life support.. someone needs to pull the plug.

420GOAT

is this fucken autotune like t-pain? i love that shit!! not really listen to but i love the ridiculousness of the idea. experimental music was like Sonic youth and shit like that.
I want to be more like 337.

That's a shame.  Looks like it was good working TG hardware that was intentionally ruined.
