10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Is this list just for US releases or can we included Japanese releases as well?

Re Dragon's Trap, play it on the SMS with an FM chip, I think it sounds awesome.

Since this is the TG-16 post I think only US releases should be included.  and also the first post mentions US releases specifically.  However I've been curious about PCE games so I made a PCE list: https://www.pcengine-fx.com/forums/index.php?topic=13235.0

BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I find it interesting that the top games here are a good mix of late TTI, orange label and black label games. Also, it is nice that the top 10 can all be found easily for under $40, aside from Bomberman 93.  Even into the top 20, only 4 games cross the $40 barrier, which means that a person can get most of the best titles for the system, without paying an absurd amount for an old game.

That said, I don't know how Soldier Blade and Magical Chase made it so high, especially the latter, given that it is the rarest game on the system. Do the 37 voters actually own the game?

Another head scratcher here. How the heck is Dynastic Hero #6? Do we really have 44 members that own it and love it, or is it all based on emulator/burned copy play? Ys I&II and Gate of Thunder make great sense, since they are the pack in games, and would be most prolific. Once again, it is nice, that the top 4 titles are reasonably priced, even on eBay. (Reasonable, when compared to the rest of the Super CD library.)

Remember that it's not the number of people but a point system.

Quote from: Damon Plus on 07/28/2012, 07:06 PMYou now how this works. Everyone gives a Top 10 list in order, first game gets 10 points, second gets 9...
So if one person thinks a game is worthy of a top spot then it's 10 or 9 points. ect. Based on most of the people that responded with lists, If i had to venture a guess I think they are there based on both people having them and also emulator/flash cart play, not just on hype alone. Of course I think some of the hype of these games may be the rarity and "treat" for lack of a better word of playing them.

if we do have 44 members with the game, they should donate a copy to me.  :-" lol.

You are posting on a forum dedicated to the system. I wouldn't be surprised to see <1% of the game owners post here.

I don't have MC, but I do I have a flash card. I don't think that makes the experience any less valid.

As turboswimbz has pointed, it is a ranked based system. So, if just 6 members gave 6 points each to Magical Chase, that is all it would need to have about the number of points it has. With the limited library of 94 titles, TG users can play on an emulator the games they can't find physical copies of, and determine it is one of the best games on the system for them.

turboswimbz

BUMP, because I want to see more people add their lists!

I think as far as US titles go, there are far more exceptional HuCards than there are disc-based games.  Looking at my PCE Daisakusen collection, I've only got 11 US disc games (though I have a couple JP versions of games that were released in the US).  Coming up with this list wasn't as easy as the HuCard list. :D

After a little while, here's an update. I've counted the list from Nec Game Head as it is, if he wants to change the order, please tell me. Sonikthehedgehog, for your list to count it has to be either a Turbochip or CD only list.

Thanks for the update.
I still plan on posting up my list eventually.  It's just that I want to be fair to all of the games, and there are still quite a few that I either haven't had a chance to play, or that I don't have enough play time under my belt to give an objective score.

On a related note, has anyone done a similar thread like this for the PC Engine games?

My list games (just ten? hahaha)

7-Boxyboy
8-Ghost Manor
9-Shockman
10-Cratermaze

US HuCard Releases:
1 Parasol Stars
2 Alien Crush
3 Ninja Spirit
4 Soldier Blade
5 Super Star Soldier
6 Dungeon Explorer
7 Blazing Lasers
8 Devils Crush
9 Military Madness
10 Legendary Axe

I had to make a lot of cuts, but Damon wants only 10! I based my votes with the idea if I could only have 10 Hu's and then some was taking away one at a time. My opinion is very biased on my ownership and hours of game play.

US CD Releases:
1 Ys 1&2
2 Lords Of Thunder
3 Buster Brothers
4 Gate Of Thunder
5 Cotton

There is not enough disc games in the US, or I just have not played them all.

Devil's Crush is freaking fantastic.  It's one of those games I've been playing since it came out and am still finding new strategies and it's still tons of fun to play.  And the music.... And it plays great on the Express!  I cannot count how many hours I've spent over the years playing DC on the Express.

Major update! Not even a single point from the last lists make Air Zonk loose the third place. There are some games that I'm surprised haven't got more votes (Super Star Soldier, R-Type, Cratermaze, and Keith Courage even because everyone has played it. Having 2 points doesn't speak too well about the game). Also, you may have noticed the lack of CD games update. I have to count points again from the beginning. Some people posted 5-entries list, while others did 10-entries list. The problem is, between updates, I've forgotten how did I count points of the Top-5 list. Did I give number one 10 points and so on, or did I give it 5?

Maybe it's a expensive game and not that many people have it? I don't have the game, wish I win that raffle :)

Seriously, looking at that list puts you into perspective of what a great library the TG-16 has. Even with less than 100 games released in the West, any of the 10-20 games could make Top 10 with no problem, and some even up until the first 30 (Galaga 90? R-Type? Legendary Axe 2? Super Star Soldier?)

esteban

I really haven't submitted my lists....it's too difficult.

However, looking at the results of the last major update has motivated me: I have moved from Phase 1 to Phase 2...

Phase 1: Impossible. I can't do it. I'll make a list and hate it.
Phase 2: Nearly impossible. I'll make a list, hate it, but consider submitting it.
Phase 3: Nap.

Bump, because this thread deserves to be on the first page.  Sticky anyone?

I had a thought.  How about doing this list fresh every year?  This would make it easy for people to update their vote's as they are able to play more and more of the TG-16 library, since they could simply post up a new top 10 every year.  This would also allow the list to be more 'alive' and reflecting current favorite games of current members instead of having votes from members who haven't posted in the last 5 year's to influence the totals.  Or, you could have the yearly list and the ongoing list, or something.

MrFlutterPie

I love the idea of doing a yearly edition.
