well, i moved into an apartment recently, and i'm starting to realize that i just have too much stuff.
I'm not in need of cash, i don't have any real debts, other than my student loans, which i'm having no trouble paying.
I just am feeling like there's not a point in having all these games when i'm never going to have time to play them all.
example, I've never beaten super metroid, I have a copy, i could even finish it in about 1/2 an hour from where i stopped playing; I just haven't.
example II, parasite eve has proven to be one of my favorite PSX games, but i've never beaten it, i always get to disc II, then i get distracted by one of my other games and forget what was going on.

so, i'm just curious, what do you fine folks think?
should i purge nigh completely and keep only 10 or so games for a given system?
should i hoard and just keep buying games so i can put them in a box or on a shelf?
should i ditch full systems and keep only 1 or 2, but keep all of the games for those systems?

WHAT DO?

keep it all! and box the stuff you wont use - if there is no need to sell then why bother - unless the boxes take up too much space i suppose...

Sparky

Nah don't do it man, apartment for now but I bet your goal is to move into a house in time and that's when "man cave" happens. If you don't have the room dump it on your folks until you have the space, as the best times are inviting people over to hang and play in that one room us males eventually get :)

albatross

agreed - no need to sell so figure something out for storage - no regrets!

PunkCryborg

I say keep it all. You never know when you will get the urge to play something you wish you didn't sell and buying it back might be more expensive than what you got it for originally.

esteban

Keep it. However, nobody is forcing you to keep buying stuff.

Take a break from purchasing and just play your existing library. I've been doing this for years. It is totally fun.  :pcgs:

I rent 3 storage units from my apartment building for the sole purpose of not getting rid of anything. If you divest that collection you're going to regret it dude (not to mention that re-acquiring it is going to cost you 4x as much). Buy some Rubbermaid bins and store that shit until you have a bigger place.

TR0N

Sell what you don't playing any more and keep the rest.I wouldn't get rid of it all because if you miss playing it,then it can become costly to buy it all again.

Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner (extortion/blackmail!), never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

bartre

heh, actually for the most part it has already past the point of being 4x more "valuable" than it was when i bought it.
i am toying with the idea of storing it, but i refuse to rent a unit, and my folks wouldn't allow me to store it at their place (they've always been kinda down on the whole gaming thing)
though truth be told, i'm most likely to trim the fat a bit and then do nothing :P

PunkCryborg

All those pcbs take up too much space, I'll store them at my place for you :P You can play them when you come down for a nice FL vacation.

JapanTokei

Don't dump everything, like everyone already said, you'll regret it later on in your life (when you have some extra time on your hands / disposable income, etc).

I do know the trouble with limited space / not enough time to play them though (that's the situ I'm in now!).  So what I'm doing are forcing myself to cut out most of my "nice to haves".. and only keeping things I want to keep forever, etc..  it's not an easy exercise to choose which goes where, so I used the "will I enjoy playing over and over / will I be able to invest the time to play this title fully, when I will actually have the time to do that??" question..

The first thing I'd do, though it's a pain in the ass, is make a list of all the games you own.

Then, look at all the games you own and rank them A-F through how much you want to play them, I also keep an S rank (above A) for stuff that has sentimental value or is one of my favs.  Then rank each game based on what you know, or if you're unsure gameplay pop it in for a bit or browse online.  For me, anything that was in the C range or below I felt fine getting rid of.

Granted, then you have to go through the process of selling stuff, which is a lot of work!

For me, I go for the "keep one system". I have other consoles, of course, but there is really only turbo that I acquire for (I do not collect). I do not think I'd feel much loose if I had to purge my other game systems. Of course, I live in a house with so much space I can house 20 arcade machines so I have the space for it all.

Best bet for you is to send all your goodies to me and I'll store it in the empty spare bedroom :)

Over the years I have dumped /sold all sorts of gaming items that I have owned.  Each time thinking these are not needed.

Now I am regretting it (for the most part) and I am finding myself re-purchasing some of the stuff.  However I will probably never get around to owning all of it again :-(

Whatever you do just treasure that copy of Deep Blue ;-)

LMAO!

Go the tactile fetish route, those games that you love to pick up and look at the box art and the inserts keep, those other games you don't, then dump and emu ;)

Do keep all obey.

It never hurts to to "trim the fat" but I would keep the bulk of the collection.

Get rid of stuff you have zero interest and keep the rest.

I need you to follow these steps exactly without question:

A. WIN LOTTERY
B. BUY WAREHOUSE
C. ERECT SIGN OUTSIDE READING "OBEYLAND"
D. SET UP AWESOME GAME AREA + SNACK AREA + HOTEL AREA
E. INVITE ALL OF US OVER TO PLAY

you keep all the stuff
it all gets played
we all win

well honestly, the bulk of my stuff comes from N64.
I've been working on getting a complete set for the system, and I'm pretty damned close (less than 50)
I'm debating ditching it and simply keeping the games i like, but it's been a lot of work, and about 2 1/2 years in the making.

I dunno, maybe i'm just getting apathetic with the colder weather.

When my N64 and all my multiplayer games and extra controllers were stolen from my car (the jerks broke my window and also stole my subwoofer) I sold off my remaining N64 stuff (except for Ocarina of Time which I gave to a forum member here) and haven't looked back.  There are so many better games to play on other systems, imo, that I wasn't interested in rebuilding that collection.

JapanTokei

Agreed if it's N64 you're talking about..

for some reason that system never aged well, and the games were not that charming (perhaps b/c it was crossing over to the polygon which are like normal PC games back in the days).

If it's SNES/ Sega / Turbo&PCE / SMS etc... then def dont dump them but downsize.  for N64.. you can prob get a nice $ for an entire collection..  esp since space is at a premium.. those carts/systems / controllers were huge!

BARTRE—DEAREST GODS OF THE HEAVENS, you left out a tremendously important detail.

No wonder you were wondering how to proceed. BURN ALL N64 items immediately.

LE PLAN:

1. On sale, you can get large 56 quart bins w/covers. Bigger sizes can become too heavy, unwieldy, hard to dig stuff out of. Smaller sizes are better for digging stuff out, but if you are ORGANIZED and buy CLEAR BINS, 56 quart is, IMHO, a very nice compromise. CLEAR BINS will make life easier, even if you label stuff, it's nice to see contents at a glance.

2. If no kids/animals around, you can stack these to the ceiling (danger! It won't be stable). Other stack formations are possible, depending on floor space available. But, worst-case scenario, you stack to the ceiling—in the bedroom, perhaps, since we all know you aren't getting any action in there.

3.  TRIAGE your collection.
BIN X = Absolutely KEEP N64 console and stuff that INTRIGUES you.

BIN Z = N64 you are not in love with! You possess it simply because you were trying to "collect 'em all" DON'T put a game here simply because "everyone thinks it is crap"...you may actually have fun goofing around with Superman with family/friends...this game actually provides entertainment, so it belongs in BIN X or Y.

BIN Y = Le Middle Ground.

The REASON to TRIAGE is to accurately assess how you rank different items. YOU DON'T have to sell anything, and you are allowed, over the following months/years, to move things into different categories. HOWEVER, should you decide to SHED, SHARE, TRADE, SELL some N64 stuff, you have a very good idea of what specific items are involved, and where to find them.

4. At first sign of the Apocalypse—Send BIN X to NecroPhile, BIN Z to me, send BIN Y to Bernie.

1) No don't sell your collection. I've never sold anything that wasn't a dupe and not regretted it.
2) (1) goes for any system. You will regret it, I promise.

PS N64 had tons of awesome games on it, wtf. If you are that excited to dump your N64 games, please hit me up.
