Quote from: EvilEvoIX on 10/29/2013, 01:21 AMWhy all the Chrono Trigger hate?  It's such a good game, plus this is just preference, no one can prove over all superiority of these games especially on the RPG genre which relies heavily on the story and fighting system.  Have I played all 16 BIT era RPG's?  No not by a long shot, but to me Chrono Trigger has it all, I love the music, the Graphical Style,  I'm a sucker for Time Travel,  14 endings, being able to run through the game from the beginning after beating it with all your new found powers intact, mixing all your characters super powers for one combined fatal attack, it's great, no flames needed.

I understand this is a PCE site and many gamers on this forum will lean towards PCE titles so maybe I can start playing these games in the future but for now Chrono Trigger has my vote.
Lol i don't hate CT, how could I? Such a good game. So I'm just saying.

I don't think anyone was saying they 'hated' Chrono, just that there were better games out there.  Even in the '93-'95 time span.  :)

Sorry, vestcunt. You're wrong. Thanks for calling me an asshole just for being interested in playing good games I didn't have back in the day on genuine hardware, though. Silly me for owning a Genesis back in the day! I should've known better that SNES games would have their prices jacked up so high. I'll be sure to pass on to anyone complaining about how expensive Turbo games are that they're being assholes, and that they should be grateful that Magical Chase only costs as much as it does.

Hell, yes! King's Quest, and most of the other Sierra adventures, were awesome. KQ was one of my earliest memories of gaming, and I still have a love of point and click adventures to this day because of it. Ah, the memories...

By the way, if you haven't seen it, I HIGHLY recommend Paw's Let's Play of King's Quest 5. It is without a doubt the most hilarious look at that game that I've seen:

Me too. :) It's too bad that the entire PCE RPG library gets written off by Nintendo and casual game fans who aren't aware of many games in general, let alone play them. I know how much fun it was to play Japanese PCE CD RPGs before and after Chrono Trigger, which I bought and played to death as soon as it came out. Like most SNES RPGs it was cool for a cart game, but CD RPGs in particular are a whole new level. Finishing Kabukiden before CT came out and seeing original backgrounds and enemies for every area of the game (let alone everything else), really magnified how painfully repetetive CT's visuals are and how much mirroring it abuses (even with the lack of battle background graphics).

I think that a big part of the mainstream appeal of CT, after the SNES/Square connection, is that it's such a short and easy RPG for beginners, that casual retro fans can manage to finish it.

I've made it about halfway through DKIII (at least judging by how far down the faq I've gotten) and while there are some pretty risque stills, I don't think I've seen anything yet that couldn't be posted on these forums.

It's a really fun game, and pretty easy to work through without much reliance on said faq.

Dude, you are hilarious.

You are also a fool if you think this behavior/mentality is unique to SNERDS.

You think only SNERDS do this (circle-jerk to Square-Enix-Et-Cetera)?  MOST FOLKS, ON ANY GIVEN PLATFORM, are TRULY ONLY FAMILIAR WITH A HANDFUL OF GAMES. Furthermore, the games they are familiar with are always the "popular" titles (akin to the "TOP FORTY" playlists on the radio...actually, do radio stations still do the "Top 40" format? It seems like "Top 15" these days...).

AXIOM: Popular shit captures most of the attention, period. That's why it is "popular"...audiences are fickle and fads fade, so once-popular franchises (Ultima, Wizardry, Might & Magic) are replaced with new fads/blockbusters.

You can rag on SNERDS all you want, but this behavior is NOT UNIQUE TO SNERDS and, I would argue, this behavior is worst in WANNABE-RETRO-PSEUDO-GAMERS (95% of the folks out there).

Disclaimer: I AM NOT A HUGE FAN OF RPGs, JRPGs, ARPGs, CRPGs, or your sweaty asshole because I like old-skool pen & paper D&D and I have a life. MY DAYS OF PLAYING THIS SHIT ON A REGULAR BASIS ARE DISTANT MEMORIES.

There's nothing wrong with playing Genesis BITD, but what stopped you from checking out the SNES over the sixteen years since the Genny was discontinued?

There are plenty of attractive SNES games that are now outrageously expensive, but no one should have any cause for surprise or regrets. Ebay inflation has been painfully obvious since at least the mid-2000's. Hipsters fired the first warning shots around the same time with retro Mega Man & Mario t-shirts. We've all lived our lives, made choices, and had access to the same information since the 16-bit era ended. If you were truly interested in the SNES, you'd own SNES games.

For myself, while everyone else was wasting their money on Playstation, XBOX, Wii, and every other piece of plastic crap that came out, I bought all of the TurboGrafx and PC Engine games I ever wanted. I bought the SMS set. I bought all of the NES RPGs. I collected a shitload of D&D books and music CD's. I basically bought everything I was interested in as a kid, all while recovering from alcoholism, putting myself through school, and living below the poverty line. I'd love to have a Saturn, Sega CD, and a few more SNES games, but I'm happy with what I got. I own more games than I'll ever play and my video game consumption has to stop somewhere; it might as well be staring at an asshole's $100 listing for Demon's Crest.

I used to play lots of SNES but once I played through the staples and started looking for more obscure titles I realized how crappy the majority of the library is. A bad SNES games is BAD but a bad PCE game is still fun. I think it's mainly that crappy tinny trumpet reverb music in 90% of the games that makes me want to turn it off.

The fact that the PCE doesn't have hardware support for tile flipping kept it from being spamned all the time. CD2/SCD games would likely have looked like SNES games otherwise.

As impressive as those screenshots are, for the most part, the later SNES RPGs look better in motion during the time when you're actually playing and not just watching some cutscene. Which naturally is about 99% of the time.

I'm about halfway through Kabukiden right now, and the tile repetition is pretty heavy, including its fair share of mirroring and palette swapping. So far it looks like if you stripped out all the cutscenes, voice acting and CD audio tracks, you could possibly squeeze the whole game on a 16mb cart. That's not to say this makes the game bad, but it is a prime example of how so many "amazing" PCE RPG visuals are actually fairly basic between occasional punctuations of extravagant cutscenes. I'd say Kabukiden's in-game stuff is at roughly the same level as FFV.

^I have to agree with SamIam. Though I like TG better than both Genny and SNES I say the later released games with that weird "realistic" rendered look. We may have better GAMES on TG but comparing raw in game graphics, later Square releases dominated the look of the SNES

Cut scenes don't count in an RPG because they're not really part of the game?  You two are hilarious.

Oh, they count. But when a 30 hour game has maybe 20 minutes worth of cutscenes, the cutscenes can only add so much strength to the overall visual appeal.

NecroPhile

Right.  28 hours of the same attack animations against the same two dozen or so legitimately different enemies in front of bland backgrounds is where the action is.

Quote from: SamIAm on 10/31/2013, 11:12 AMAs impressive as those screenshots are, for the most part, the later SNES RPGs look better in motion during the time when you're actually playing and not just watching some cutscene. Which naturally is about 99% of the time.
I honestly think this is mainly due to artists being more comfortable and skilled in their craft than anything else.

If you see games like Bahamut lagoon, released in 1996, you see more secondary animation and just overall more principles of standard animation being used than was used in most games in the past.

Some games on the PC-FX demonstrate this as well.

The art style and even the color range to an extent can be similarly achieved on the PCE.  Just check out some of Black Tigers Golden Axe remake BGK's BKG's.  A box of crayons doesn't make a great picture ya know?

The problem with snerds is they pretend to be diehard gamers, but they only play half the RPG's on the system and they never shut up about the same handful of games.

I've been hearing the same fuckers rave about the same games ever since my younger brother and his annoying friends had their video-game/body-odor parties in my living room in the Nineties.

Chrono Trigger. Chrono Trigger. Chrono Trigger.
I replied to another thread with a list of top SFC/SNES games and no mention of Chrono Trigger, in fact I included only one Square Soft RPG in my list.
I can't believe I forgot to mention
Super Metroid
Contra III
Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
I could keep going and going naming excellent AAA games for the system, nothing beats it.
