(Chosen by roflmao)

I think the timing is just right to bring out a classic, and what better choice than Bonk's Adventure? It's also just the right occasion for me to beat this game for the first time, and I hope it is for at least one or two other members, too. Feel free to mock me if I don't post a picture of the ending screen by next Wednesday.

For those of you who have beaten it a billion times already, feel free to use the thread to wax nostalgic about the experience of the game. After you beat it for the billion and first time, that is.

(If you have any questions or comments about the GOTW system, please either PM me or post in the old thread)

PunkCryborg

I haven't beaten this one yet either so I've been looking forward to this. I didn't get much time to play drop rock last week, like 1 hour of game time only :(

SuperPlay

Great game choice.

I am not sure how much play that I will manage as I have a packed week already :-(

GohanX

I just played through this a couple of weeks ago, and it's currently my daughter's favorite game.

I didn't like it at first, but something clicked with me Couple of years ago. One thing that is crucial for beating the game is collecting the extra lives, usually through points. It's essential that you collect the fruit, smilies, and do well on the special stages. The last few boss battles are very, very brutal and you'll need them.

munchiaz

I played this a few years back and got to the end, but couldn't beat it due to lack of extra lives. I will be trying again. Hopefully i can find some time today after work, and school, then more work to play tonight.

Psycho Punch

I just got my ass handed to me in calculus (and tomorrow in statistics) so I'm definitely going to play the crap out of it this week to chill out. A classic!

roflmao

I'm looking forward to playing through this again.  It's been a few months. :)

FiftyQuid

I might play this one using a walkthrough.  See if I missed anything after all these years.
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

dallaspattern

Still love milking the worms in the gut of the dino. Easy 5up!

whisper2053

About to load this up now...I've never given it a full playthrough, so I'll be doing my best here :D

Also, Lost Sunheart got shorted a day up there...  [-(

PukeSter

Incredible game. The best Bonk imo.

Controls are sort of clunky, but they are perfect too. Still work great. Bonk has a giant head on a small body, so he moves appropriately. ;)

Kinda "primitive", pun intended. For the graphics. But they are colorful, and stuff like the moon in the sky is amazing.

Funny though, I never use the Turbo switches.

It's pretty easy to 1CC too.

Xak

the only Bonk i have beaten.

i have reached the end boss of Bonk2 but i had no more continues. and bonk 3 just bored me, it seemed to take a step back in the lush graphics of Bonk2

SuperPlay

Managed to get to 2-5 don't think I have ever got this far ;-) lol

yoyo

Very nice choice. Think I'll play this later on today.
The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.

I made it to the last boss today using 2 continues. Sadly I died on him and could never get past the Dino tank thing with only the 2 lives you get when continuing. Weirdly, I find myself in "Super Mario" mode, where I feel like I need to be in a hurry and have to keep reminding myself that I don't have a time limit. Once I started to change that mind set and started looking around for hidden stuff and spending more time getting points I do a lot better.

roflmao

I remember the first time I beat it, it took me roughly 3.5 hours.  And that was after playing it for weeks, if not months. (This was back in high school when it was new)  Nowadays I can beat it in about an hour, and I bet I can get under the 1 hour mark if I don't spend so much time early on juggling for extra lives.  But it's so much fun!

I have a youtube playthrough, but I won't post it until this game timeframe is over.  Some of you probably already know about it. :)

I'm looking forward to playing it again this weekend, when I'm not so busy and worn out.

munchiaz

don't forget the hidden secrets out there. Also i got to the boss of the stage and stopped playing for tonight.

IMG

PunkCryborg

My first time beating it!!
1cc  :D
Last boss fight was intense, I started with 4 lives and was down to one heart on my last life
I really enjoyed this one. I've owned the game for about 4 years and this was the first serious go at it. I would always pop it in when I wanted something relaxing and was putting off playing this one seriously for a rainy day.
My wife usually isn't interested in my games but she started watching when I got to the last boss and now she's playing it.
Great game, 10/10 because there is nothing there is nothing I would want changed in this game  :D

SamIAm

I gave it a go last night and made it to stage 2-4 or 2-5 before I ran out of lives. A thoroughly charming game. I'm sure I'll make it further tonight.

Gogan

Such a classic! Picked it up at a garage sale for $5 bitd. Play thru it probably once or twice a year. I loved finding the secret rooms and bonus stages. And was excited when I found out you get points for juggling! I was jus messing around and found that out. From then out, I always 1cc with 25 lives left after the game is over. Does someone have the record for most lives left after the game completes?

(PS. Don't forget about the 1up at the VERY beginning of the game.  For those not in the know..on the first level, walk to the left on the other side of the level marker, jump and bonk the ground and grab your 1up.)
Nothin beats the real thing.

There's another one just outside of the dinosaur you go though, on the screen with the elevator.  Once you're pooped out, jump up and to the right.  It's hidden behind the dinosaur sprite. :)

dallaspattern

Goddamn, I forgot about fighting all of the bosses again in a row at the end! Harsh strain!

GohanX

Congrats Punk! Beating this game is a pretty nice achievement.

turboswimbz

Played through it again last night. 1CC, forgot how hard it was when you get the end of it, like punk I was stockpiled with lives for the end, but was whittled down low just 2 bonkys left!

DAMN YOU KING DROOL. Eat It.
IMG

And so the first GAME I EVER PLAYED.
The First Game I ever Beat.
The first game I beat without a continue.

Is once again played through and put back on the shelf.

I slept wonderfully last night!  Thank you all for letting me share.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

SamIAm

Made it to Stage 5-4 last night.

I'll be interested to compare this to Bonk 2 later on. Bonk 1 seems to have an emphasis on learning how to deal with enemy behavior and less focus on the terrain itself, but I recall Bonk 2 being much richer in terrain design.

Le truth! I got my ass handed to me by the boxing dude on stage 4. Man what a tough stage.

This game is a classic, and I find myself playing it a lot more than the Mario or sonic games. Although I do like Bonks Revenge better. The graphics are more colorful. Bonks Adventure can look sparse at times.

FraGMarE

<3 Bonk's Adventure.  I like Revenge a bit more, but Adventure is some definite platforming goodness too.  Revenge definitely has the better graphics, though.  Hmm, I bet it wouldn't be too terribly hard to hack some Bonk's Revenge graphics into Bonk's Adventure.

Ah, the game that hooked me onto the TG-16.

Of all the cavemen and prehistoric characters that the 16-bit era gave us, Bonk is no doubt my favorite. Playing Bonk's Adventure was a blast for the first time, and still an enjoyable romp decades later. The first week or so had me picking up my own ass off the floor, but later, I got better and forays into the later levels were just amazing (although relentless in terms of difficulty).

Remember the tune that played in the bonus rooms of Bonk's Adventure?

Bonk's Adventure (TG16) Music- Bonus Area

Oh, I so love this tune.  :)
My past-life would've surely led to our demise, and I had left it not a moment too soon. Our escape, though dangerous, had gone well. The train ride, sunlight, and passing snow-covered pine trees came together in a flickering show of our bright, new future together. Her head rested on my shoulder as she soundly slept to the gentle rocking of the passenger car. We felt freedom. We felt peace.

Xak

Bonks Revenge looks better than  Bonk 3 oddly

Bonk's Adventure and Revenge are two glasses of a sweet, refreshingly cold and fruity beverage. Bonk 3 is the same except the ice has melted and the glass has sat on the table for several hours.

The PSG music in the Bonk series is also VERY underrated, imo.

Just played through this on the Express. This game makes a fantastic portable game, with the exception that it's a tad too long.

Ah, got in under the wire!  Whew!  I played through it again this evening and it was as fun as ever.

Tonight I decided to try to beat the game without doing any juggling to see if I could make it.

I did.  And still had 16 lives left over. :)  I think my record is somewhere around 30 lives left over, but I also skipped a lot of the secret rooms and bonus games this time around.

Since the week is about up, here's a link to my playthrough on Youtube from about a year ago:

(This is a playlist. Each level is it's own video so I can't embed it properly.  :? )

I wish I had been recording tonight's playthrough, though.  I think I did a lot better tonight on the mini-games and bosses.  Oh well.

I bow to your Bonk skills.  I truly have much to learn.  With that said, I had a great time playing for a little bit over the weekend and also uploaded footage of my experience.  I don't beat it (Again, I'm rusty/no good), but I had a great time playing!
Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Josh and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner (extortion/blackmail!), never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

Thanks guys.  This is one of those games that I picked up back when it was new and I only had a few games.  So I played this one a TON.  And my one other Turbo friend also played it a lot, so whenever we got together we would show off new things we'd found.  Some of my fondest old-school memories were playing Bonk with this guy.

And I've never gotten tired of playing it.  I mentioned in chat last night that I found another hidden room during yesterday's playthrough that I never knew about! Mind=blown!

Looks like you made it pretty far, Joshua!  I'll definitely watch it once I have a good chunk of free time.

That's a great analogy.  Bonk 3 is definitely missing that something special that made the first game great and the second game pretty dang good.

I always liked how the hidden bonus room cave entrances have eyes.  I call it Doorio-kun.

Agreed. Very atmospheric.

I have beaten this game multiple times. Sometimes I just sit down to play and listen to the musics then I end up playing through the whole game.

Don't forget that there is a way to skip the underwater levels by spin jumping over the bridge later on in the game. I can't remember the stage number.

And I LOVE the music for Bonk's Adventure.

This awesome read has motivated me to try giving this game another go. It's such a fun game with great music but unfortunately for me I'm totally lacking in the Bonk's Adventure mastery department !!
Finally playing these games I couldn't get my hands on back in 91' !!! Nec fan always !!!

Just flip the turbo switch up and juggle the enemies across the screen the whole game to milk points for lives and take your time to find more fruit/bonk smilies and the secrets and you'll be loaded with lives by the end and it's a cakewalk then.
