Totally.  The super wealthy will perpetuate their extravagant lifestyle as long as possible.  The less fortunate will start to feel the impacts much earlier and much harder.  Kind of like this recent recession.  The people who suffered the most hardship were the poor and middle class.  The wealthier folks experienced a hiccup but recovered much faster than the rest of us.

The frustrating part is I just dont see a plausible solution to the problem   everything that would work requires significant lifestyle changes that most people, rich or poor, simply wont do until they are forced to.

And I agree, the peak has definitely passed.  Its just a matter of how quickly will the decline happen.  And can we transform out society before it hits the bottom.  Ultimately things will correct themselves if we do nothing, it just wont be pleasant for a lot of people who just happen to be alive during the worst of it.

You can look at the history of Argentina and Venezuela, up to current day Venezuela; to get an idea as to how some things will go down, economically at least.

The best term to describe it is, Catabolic collapse. The slow dying off, no bang, no big rapture, no technological singularity; just the standard downwards collapse of yet another great civilization in the history of our species. A few million years from now, it will be the turn of the decedents of Raccoons and Ravens. We'll be the dinosaurs they dig up ;)

I think this makes me a sociopathic loser, which, in turn, makes me cry: I have fantasized about liberating privately held prototypes. I mean physically sneaking into homes. Stealing. Dumping the ROM. Then returning the physical item.

I don't think my behavior is any better, or less selfish, than the hoarder's.

Which makes me cry. Bittersweet tears, though, since we will all be playing some crappy, half-finished Off The Wall prototype.
