Sure, but how often does he focus on Turbo?  Not much, if at all.  His fans are NES fans.  I hope it stays that way. :)

. Yeah but the post I replied to says he is jumping on the turbo bandwagon. I don't think that cause he's had one for years. But for sure, it has received no focus besides fighting street.

technozombie

If he's getting on the Turbo bandwagon it's probably because he's ran out of interesting ideas on other systems or the that that TG is just getting more popular. There is a Facebook page I'm on and TG rarely pops up but when it does everyone wants it and there is always someone who's like what this, looks cool, blah blah.

I can personally attest to this.  The controls get wonky on some games when you use it this way.  System > Tap > Extension > Controller is the proper order for everything to work right.

Fair enough guys. I guess we've just gotten lucky then. I kind of want to go through my library now and see if I can find which ones are borked with the extension coming out of the system first haha.

Is James really the cause of the retro explosion?

Medic_wheat

Quote from: guest on 06/11/2014, 09:37 PMIs James really the cause of the retro explosion?
I thing he is many things....

A guy who did two or three videos when he was in film school that friends thought was funny then a few years later this YouTube thing became a thing and he posted these old film school videos ...

That snowballed into a brand, a name, a series, recognition....right time..filled a need.

But what need?

Well when AVGN became its own thing other smaller scale things had also started ScrewAttack being one of them....the ability for technology to up and comers to do simp,e editing and mass media and availability to talk about Atheir anosalgia...

That breathed life into what many of us liked in the 80s and 90s..that being many of our first home gaming and arcades.....

Many of these individual groups combined into largers organizations their fan bases mixed and over the past few years many of us now earning more money want to reclaim their childhood.....or games and systems that we never got to own or play as a kid.....

Now it is all at its peak.....or many of us HOPE it is at it peak...but no

Their are still systems and games to learn about and collect for to add to our game rooms which only makes those from the beginning find their hobbies harder to collect for......l

My being new to obey am simply one more leech trying to get the same game you may want for a price neither of us wants to pay for but have to because there is more and more demand....

The only reall way for gamers to control the price are to sell and buy from with in the community and cut out the middle man cut out the reseller cut out the horder....

But to an extent that is only partly possible.

BigusSchmuck

You know, I haven't heard about this guy until I read this thread. But I'll say this: Gamesack is much better. That is all.

GameSack is quite possibly the best vg show ever. Metal Jesus is good, too. I'm not sure there are any others that can compete.

dallaspattern

My favorite episode was the Ghostbusters one. Trilogy rather. He did a great job putting them together.

I highly doubt he'll ever focus much on the TG16, there's too little demand for it. Like the Neo Geo, Jaguar, Lynx etc.

Spida's turbo reviews are good

Retro libertys stuff a bit of a spin off of game chasers but less crass and more teeny something meta humor

Game chasers - think American pickers

Happy video game nerd

The gaming historian

Metal Jesus - Rocks!  A very PC gamer at heart

Anything from retro ware

The girl gamer was good but she seems to have disappeared since 2010 ish

A few more....let me look at my subscriptions lol...

Medic_wheat

Projared

Michael b the game genie

Angry joe (funny but just feels entirely to gear to sell out for recognition with in the gaming Comunity. But still emjoy his higher production stuff....anything with commander capitalism (cobra commander for cordite stuff) is a riot

BigusSchmuck

Medic_wheat

Lukemore -pretty much everything Japanies and arcade.

That one video gamer -tries to 100% games and give final thoughts. Good stuff but the sketches grow tiresome. In fact the whole persona need to inject comedy really bores me as I feel more relatable when the reviewers being themselves.

Glennpanet - everything N64 and fun

The rage ahold- funny but talks so fast it is hard to keep up with his word smithing

Gamerzofwar - fun stuff mostly pick up vids and personal favorits in series from various games

Petdore - same as gamers of wars but comes off as more of a horder then gamer...

Clan of the grey wolf - very technical breakdown of systems games and gaming companies

L1games - mostly a blog and gaming thoughts coming from a gamer who also has his own retro shop...it's like being best friends with your comic shop owner that you never get to visit his store anymore

Somecallmejohny - just a dude talking and playing games with a quality mic and good video capture. Nothing more

Satchbagesgoods - an art majors view on game and it's art direction.....just has a zen like way of coming at you ..... His editing and branding (style) is simply refreshing.  No gimmicks no nada just an artist take on a game and it's design elements.

Chargeback foreword - really amazing videos but almost no activity of late

16butbrit - honestly at times seeing things from gamers not from America is a treat. And so is this Brit

Continue - three friends play the first ten or so minutes of a game live and talk smack and try way to hard to be funny.  Then they say if they would keep playing froma 10 minute demo. I use to like it but the premise wore thin quickly.

Oldskoolbrian - think grisly Adams.  Then think if instead of a bear he had games.  And beer.  About it.

Worldofnintendo - really just annual and semi monthly pick up updates and the eviloution of his gaming space. Mostly just seeing the annual videos with recaps of its grow just makes your jaw drop.  It's what happens when a gamer focuses on just one company and goes balls out to make it unique but clean and organized.

Alpha omega sin - game the fuck on.

Arcade impossible - one man and his prigress towards making a arcade in his basement.

Crtchad - really.  It's like old school MTV.  All videos and no talky talky ...of well arcades. Well mostly TVs all set up and hooked up to various arcade boards.

Guizdp - I think a Swedish guy who does stop motion animation with pearl bead art of iconic and reimaginng arcade sprit work......really fun stuff there

I could go on. I honestly have something lie, a 100 gaming centric youtuube guys I follow and almost as many toy and comics stuff.  It's a mixed bag and you'll always find something or someone's work and view you like.

o.pwuaioc

I don't know all of those, but if they're the quality of things such as like Alpha Omega Sin, then I don't need to look any further at your list.

ToyMachine78

I'll say that AVGN is what motivated me to pull out all of my old systems. Watching his shows just reminded me of how much I loved that time of gaming, and I completely identified with his feelings of a lot of the games he rips...in particular Dr. Jeckyl, Hydelyde, and Friday the 13 th

For me avgn doesn't have his heart in it any more. The episodes where James and mike sit and play a game for 20 mins to half an hour are pretty dull. Game sack is much more interesting.

Mike sucks butt and those non-AVGN episodes where Mike and James sit and play random games are dull. The only good stuff from cinemassacre are the AVGN stuff and some other miscellaneous James Rolfe videos.

His current stuff hasn't been as good lately because he has been putting all of his effort into the movie.  The stuff he has been making lately has been quick cheaper filler because he has been working hard on finishing up the movie.

The important thing to remember about AVGN is that above all, it's a comedy show.

That said, some of James's ranting recently has struck me as very forced. I mean, I know it's a character and all, but I could feel more genuine frustration from him before. In the Tiger handhelds episode, I don't think he actually cared all that much, but he probably felt it wouldn't be an AVGN episode if he didn't scream for a while.

Hopefully, the movie has a healthy mix of James the actor and James the gamer. As for the show, I personally think he could easily get away with going more low key at times.

This seemed appropriate here. Perhaps someone from this forum wrote in and asked the question?

Very good post seems more then relivent.

I dont like how they seem to bsck away from the answer as a maybe or a hard to quantify. Bla bla bla.

To me. Clearly game reviewers be them on youtube or other mass media markets such as hard core gaming or racketboy and alike it generates interest. It generates a sudden if not increasing interesting in cwrtian games and systems that collectors will gravitate towards.

I will say this...

he takes what I asume are pod cast that he recoreds with a reseller friend (whome I am unsure if I find intersting, honest, or just plain snobbish) and takes snipits and repost them on his youtube account as though these 2-4 minutes videos are NEW videos to generate additional content.

Even then I feel like what ever micro topic he redirects to his youtube account is more "here is a questiosn" ....

and then gives no real insight apart from stating the obvious .....

If you are going to post a video probing into topics (at times he has mentioned intersting ones) then do a full video on it.  Bring oposining view points, give more insight then questions, make it more engaging and meaty then a 2 minute blurb.

Thank you.

In general, though, most "YouTube" celebrities are retarded. I only watched 1-2 videos of Pat. I can't really judge him unless I were to watch more. I honestly don't spend much time watching new content on YouTube (I prefer watching the old, ancient stuff that has been archived—like SquareOne TV from PBS with my daughter).

Pat the NES Punk is an avid TG16 fan and has a full set. He has made many videos on TG16 over the years, I don't see AVGN jumping prices too much.
