I know there are quite a few members here that live in TurboGrafx saturated areas but here in NW Ohio it's amazing if you even see a loose Keith Courage at a game store or resale shop once a year.  About a year ago I was surprised to see someone had traded in a few TurboGrafx games at a place I frequent.  The good part of Turbo stuff not popping up very often is that many people aren't familiar with the value or demand.  This shop must not have wanted to bother looking up prices on the Internet (praise the lord) So I was able to pick this up for $5.00.
IMG

At the time I had only owned my TG16 for a month or two so I thought it was odd that this had the box and instructions but no case.  Little did I know that this was a release that did not have a case.  I also picked up Alien Crush CIC for $5.00 that day.  Although Griffon's box and manual are in sad shape it still stands as my best find in the wild and it was especially cool to find in my NEC deprived area.

I know that there have to be many of you who have amazing finds that allowed you to add a gem or two to your collections.  Please share!

I think my best score was this lot...  If I remember right I paid $600 for it all.  Everything in it was absolutely mint.  All the hardware and games had their boxes and everything.  Had to get it picked up by someone local to the guy hehe.  As he put it when he picked it up for me... "Dude everything here is absolutely cherry!"

I took an entire rental store's stock of TG-16 stuff. I paid maybe... $50 total for it? Some of it never rented. It was moved into a back room. I asked where it was, they told me where. Long story to it, at first the games were priced for me at $5 a pieces, maybe $3 for 10. Now, these games were complete, with cardboard box (You'd take that off the shelf and exchange at the counter for the game), etc.

Later, after a while, doing odd jobs for the video store, such as plastering coupons on cars for TG-16 games, the owner just told me, as a gift, to take the last 50-60 of these old games for free, as a gift.

It was awesome.

I can't recall the exact number, but probably 80-100 boxed games. I also got a rental case, some spare hucard cases, rental tg-16 system, a controller, and a tap.

This was in the mid-late 90s. Best time to pick up discontinued stuff, when it is freshly discontinued.

What was amazing, is I thought to ask. I hadn't seen them for rent in a while, they were removed when it went under new ownership. So, I hadn't seen the games in maybe 6 months, a year? I asked the owner, and he told he took it off the shelves since it wasn't renting, and put them in the back. The TG-16 stuff was wasting real estate where stuff that rented could be.

Sometime during that time, the boxes were thrown out for the NES games. They were still for rent, since a few people still rented the NES games, but the price was lowered, and they were set out, spine first in their rental cases. I guess he didn't care too much if and NES game was stolen.

I still recall spending time, looking through the games, trying to figure out which ones to buy, reading the descriptions, etc. I spent a long time, that first time seeing the boxes of the games, just looking through them that summer day.

I was into movies at the time, and the guy got along with me. I rented stuff, sometimes got free rentals, plastered coupons for him, I figure, he thought after I bought so many, fuckit, Merry X-mas, take the last of this non-renting stuff from my store's back room!

I also recall that's how I found out about the movie Mallrats. Back then, video rental places held onto demo/preview VHS tapes, in case the studio contacted them for them to be returned. So, shitloads were back there. I saw Mallrats. The VHS preview cover was mostly a Magic Eye image, with a blurb in the corner or something. I have to search on ebay, that may be the VHS poster art... yeah, it looked like the Advance poster art. I no longer have that Demo VHS, though. I grabbed that, and others, sometimes. I recall first viewing that movie around the same time as that TG-16 haul, and finding it really funny, but not knowing many other people who had seen it or even heard of it. Now, well, it's different.

Not the greatest deal, but I paid 100$ for a complete Air Zonk (instructions were a photocopy though), a sealed Splatterhouse and a sealed Galaga 90. The seller added, for just 0.5$ each.:

Alien Crush
JJ & Jeff
Chase HQ
Night Creatures
Double Dungeons
Tv Sports Football
Silent Debuggers
King of Casino
Time Cruise
Battle Royale

All of them CI. Not the most amazing but living in Europe and just started collecting, I think it was pretty good.

Keep these coming guys!  Mr. Fulci that haul is stuff of legend.  No rental places rented TG stuff in my area.  This is probably a big reason I didn't know anything about it growing up let alone know it even existed.  I don't even remember seeing them for sale in toy stores though I'm sure they were.  I've recently talked to people around here that had them when new and sold them years ago.

fixed the Turbo Express (it cleaned up real nice) and sold it with a copy of victory run on ebay for twice what i paid for the original lot.

This was the 2nd place, somewhat local to where I was at that time, I knew of, that rented TG-16 games.

I saw it for sale in Lionel Kiddie City, Children's Palace (At one point they had a TG-16 TV displaying a Laserdisc on loop, of the titles and such), It was at Toys R Us, that was the first place I played Air Zonk, though I can't recall if it was a Duo and the 3-in-1 demo CD, or if it was a TG-16 with Air Zonk. It's been nearly 20 years, so I can't recall.

Also, some department stores had them. I recall when a few went out of business near me, and they were clearing stuff out of their store room, sometimes TG-16 stuff showed up. This was when Playstation was new, so I guess this was 1996? 1997? I picked up a system and games when that happened, all new.

The best time to gather stuff for any system, or nearly anything else, is when interest is not really there and it is being discontinued or is freshly discontinued. That's when a lot of people just want the stuff out of their way since it is taking up space other more popular, profitable merchandise could be.

Hi guys! :) I picked up a TG-16, dozen HuCards, 2 Turbo Express (1 broken), 1 controller regular, 1 controller arcade stick, 1 turbotap, 1 turbovision, lots of adapters, wiring etc. plus bunch of empty cases and sleeves, and a bunch of other small stuff...all for FREE from my girlfriend's girlfriend.

This was in 2006, but I bought a used TG-16 with instructions that was in like new condition on ebay for $18. It looked like it had never been used.

Best post of the thread right from esteban :).  Now it seems impossible to find most any game for under $20.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong  :-k

The best deal I had was my first:  at TurboExpress with no sound but a lot of good card only games:  Cadash, Chase HQ, Military Madness, Final Lap Twin and Alien Crush for $100 shipped.  This forum back then had the cap fix for the sound, but while inside I saw that the power plug was smashed so it only runs on batteries.  Still, that is the best I've got...and I still own all of it.  That TE has saved me from boredom away from home many, many times.
THANKS TO ALL PCEFX members who have helped fix my hardware and add to my games library!  What a thrill!

I did that recently as well.  I bought a broken TurboExpress with 6 games, TV tuner and boxed AC adapted for $80.00.  The games were loose and nothing special other than the fact I didn't have them.  I recapped the TE and it cleaned up nice and it re-sold for like $120.  Hardly a profit but I consider that I basically got 6 games for free.

I haven't got crazy good luck so my deals are a bit weak.

I got a CIB Turbografx system with all of the paperwork with a CIC Splatterhouse and a loose Bonk's Revenge for $85.

I picked up my CIC of Cadash for $20.  The manual was pretty worn but still.  I had been searching for the name of that game for years after playing the arcade machine at my local Zellers.

I am pretty happy with my purchase of Last Alert for $23 a few weeks ago considering the current pricing trends.

It's funny you mention last alert.  I bought that before I even had a CD system.  The only reason I bought it was because I knew it was a run and gun and I got it on eBay CIC for $20.00 including shipping.  This was only a few months ago and I kind of thought that was the going rate.  I've seen them recently be offered for quite a bit more than that.

Mine was last week. I have a pc engine duo in canada that is having trouble reading the music on super cd, so while i'm in Japan, I decided to ask my local shop if they have a pc engine duo for sale. They do not, but they offer to call another place. i go to the gym meanwhile. When i come back, he informs me that they do not have a pc engine duo, but they have a pc engine duo R if I want. I know that these usually command huge about of money for no real difference, so I was about to pass. Just for the laugh i ask how much they ask for it. He looks at his screen and i can see in his eyes that he is surprised by the high price. He said shyly ; " It's  ichi man (100$)".

My heart jumped. I ask calmly if its a complete set. He says that yes it comes with all cables and controllers. I proceed to ask him to call again the other store and order it for me. Meanwhile i walk around the shop and check for more pc engine games. He comes to me again with the phone and he looks sorry. I knew it was too good to be true. He says "I'm sorry, i made a mistake, it isnt complete. It doesnt include the box, but the manual is included" I tell him i dont mind, we finish the order, i sign a paper and go back home. 2 days later, i was the proud owner of a non yellowed pc engine duo R. that thing is soo beautiful!

that was my best score, that and finding castlevania rondo of blood for 55$ in the wild, which is what started my passion for the pc engine.

That's awesome!  I just paid $20 more from that with a non-working disc portion.  I'm still waiting for it in the mail so I'll be stoked if it's an easy fix.

I am super jelly of Rondo.  I don't have a (real) copy of it yet and am only willing to spend up to $100.00 CIC.  I'm sure patience will pay off eventually.

I know it's not rare by any means just in high demand because it kicks so much ass.  I've played through it many times on my CD-R copy but that's not going to stop me from getting the real thing.  Seems like internet minimum these days is like $140.00.

Hey another Toledoan! I can only remember a couple times I found Turbo stuff in the wild around here.

In 1997 when I was going to school in Bowling Green I scored a TG-16 with a Turbobooster and around 25 games for $50 at Goodwill. That got the ball rolling. :)

My best ever find was in June of 2007 at the Goodwill on Reynolds Rd. Hidden in the CDs were about a dozen games including Dungeon Explorer II and Neutopia II for $3 a pop. No system, so I always suspected whoever bought it missed the games. Always check the CD bins!  I don't think I'll ever do that good at a thrift again. :)

Back in the late 90s Allied Records was a goldmine for games before collecting and eBay went mainstream. I truly miss those days, but Turbo stuff has always been hard to find around here. I only knew one person who had one while they were still current.

Good luck!

Yeah, in thrift stores, the areas where CDs are kept sometimes have TG-16 stuff.

I found Keith Courage and Neutopia n a thrift store's CD area once, Priced about $2 or $3 each. This was in 2000 or so. I haven't been to thrift store's much since the early 2000's, since now most of the goodwill stuff is checked out for ebay first, and there are also more people who go to the thrift store's looking for either this type of stuff for their self, or to resell.

There were times, I could find awesome stuff in goodwill, but that ended in the late 90's, early 00's. I remember finding a huge amount of MAD Magazine paperback books. 50 or so. I bought all of those. I also recall a large shelf/bin that had easily 100+ Atari 2600 games, I bought lots of those. I guess someone's collection in their parent's basement was dumped at goodwill.

Every so often I go to look in a thrift store, but it's only at certain ones where I don't think they scan everything for ebay first before putting it out there for sale. Even then it's only twice a year or so I visit a thrift store.

Now, thrift stores are becoming more mainstream and "Cool". It's even got a song now!

It had no idea what to expect, but after the intro, I had an idea what I was in for. The intro where he talks about the cats. That intro right there set the tone.

I recently watched for the first time the extended edition. Wow, other than a few scenes, it is not as good as the theatrical release. It's also missing that entire intro. An instance where I prefer theatrical, the extended release.

That's awesome!  I always look in the CD sections at thrift stores for this very reason.  My score from my first post was actually at Allied on Reynolds.  I have also gotten a few items from Mike at Video Game Underground.  He used to have a large collection he sold years back but he's sold me a few leftovers he's found here and there.

I've gotten lots of good deals, but nothing really stands out head and shoulders above the rest.  There's been many good deals from peeps here (sealed Bazzy, Dead of the Brain, Faucet Armor, Illust/Print Boosters, LA and pacs, and I've won a couple raffles too), lots of nice stuff from TZD during their sales (including a TurbobExpress bundle with link, ac adapter, car adapter, and a couple games for $150ish), quite a few sealed Turbobs from those UK peeps a few years back (around $13 each shipped), and of course plenty of generous goodies from Secret Santas.

To be honest, I usually don't remember things like this, but I do remember buying a brand new Y's Book I&II from TZD back in the day. Not PCE/Turbo related, but I picked up a LOT of Sega Saturn stuff as it was being discounted, including a few JP releases and the US Panzer Dragoon Saga for not a lot of money. How I wish I had done this during the later days of the Turbo. ](*,)

It doesnt include the box, but the manual is included" I tell him i dont mind, we finish the order, i sign a paper and go back home. 2 days later, i was the proud owner of a non yellowed pc engine duo R. that thing is soo beautiful!
Duo R/RX systems do not suffer the same leaky capacitor problem that the regular Duo does and are much sturdier. Any time you buy a regular Duo you should have the caps replaced unless you can confirm that it's already been done.

Nice haul and Mallrats was the first Kevin Smith flick I watched BITD with a bunch of friends. Good times.

An instance where I prefer theatrical, the extended release.

.
Yeah the intro narration from Brody (Jason Lee) definitely gives you a pretty good idea what's in store.

As for the extended edition, I only watched it once. For a reason. lol the whole extra storyline was not necessary and I'm glad they axed it.

Their PCBs are inferior, decidedly less sturdy.

A couple of years ago I  picked up a Super System Card for like $50 or so at a store in Seattle.  Not at all the best score around but I thought it was quite reasonable and was glad to make the purchase.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

I may have something, as part of a Saturn lot I bought, the seller threw in a Saturn Cleaning Kit. It turns out it's quite rare so I kept it for a few years (back in my Saturn Collectard phase). I recently gave it away, well I threw it in with a bundle of games.

A gamer friend of mine here in Japan offered to let me take as many of his old PC Engine games as I liked. He had about 30 total, and among them was Sapphire. I told him how much it was really worth, and he decided to keep it to sell later, along with a few other valuable games. I took Cotton, Spriggan, Bomberman 93, Aero Blasters, Street Fighter II, Anearth Fantasy Stories, and two or three more.

I also picked up an unboxed Duo-RX for 7000 yen, or about $70, and another unboxed one in mint condition for 9000 yen, which I was pretty happy about.

Finally, I picked up a new PC-FX that had been opened once but never played (this was apparent by the sealed packaging of everything inside) for about 10,000 yen. Later, I got a quite used one for $30, which I sent to a friend as a gift.

That's quite the gift if he lived overseas. :)

I bought a lot of 3 PCE games off ebay around 2010 and I noticed the guy was in my city. I messaged him to see where he was and see if I could just pick them up and asked him if he has more pce games he was selling. He said he was selling off almost all his game collection and to come check it out. So I went to his place and he had tubs and tubs of games. He said he has had almost all of them since new and was just tired of looking at all these bins of games and just doesn't have the passion for gaming anymore.
He opened up his turbo bin and it had maybe 40 games including several sealed games, soldier blade, some pce games, a TG16, ave 3 pad. We talked for a bit and after realizing I was just another fellow hardcore gamer like him I think he was very happy to negotiate a price and I ended up with the lot for about $150.
Looking back I wish I had more to offer him but that was more like the price he threw out there for everything. I didn't follow turbo collecting and prices much since I've always been more into the pce side but I know he was happy for it all to go to me instead of another reseller.
He had more bins of games including many mint Sega CD games and most other consoles. I wish I could have bought more but I hope they went to good homes.
Anyways cheers to you fellow gamer that sold your whole turbo collection to me, I'm still playing and enjoying them all!

I have always had some dirty good luck finding games and such, but the most crazy one was many years ago I found a bunch of rare Atari prototype boxes and was asked if I would trade just 1 of them ( the Incredible Hulk, just the box) for a complete US MC, still had the plastic wrap on it.. Take that high rollers!!!

I have yet to pay over a $125 for any game. Most I have got in trades or just good finds over the years (( patient grasshopper pose))

Quote from: Desh on 06/22/2014, 09:25 PM...  I am super jelly of Rondo.  I don't have a (real) copy of it yet and am only willing to spend up to $100.00 CIC.  I'm sure patience will pay off eventually.
I hope that you can find it for $100 or less, but  I wouldn't wait if I were you.  It's a great game, and for an extra $20-40, it's still worth it.

graffias79

About 3 or 4 years ago I found this baby lurking with the board games probably wedged between a partially complete jigsaw puzzle and a scrabble box from the 70s.  The only thing missing was the game Keith Courage.  The controller, and all the logos still have their protective plastic covering.  Not a scratch on the system and barely any dust.  It also has the manual, the Keith Courage comic, and a couple other things in a plastic bag with a placard saying "Thanks for buying the TurboGrafx 16...".

The only bad thing is the box is a little beat up and has along piece of Montgomery Wards tape wrapped over it, and a MW price tag for $199.99.

Goodwill price? $6.99.

I SCOURED that store for a CD-ROM attachment and looked through all the CDs for games but found none! Damn!
