@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Hello chaps, nice to meet you :) and thanks to the Powers That Be for allowing me to register!

I recently purchased my very first piece of PCE gear - a broken CDROM2. Yep, I'm doing it a bit ass-backwards, but as it was damaged it was cheap, and I hope to get it fixed.

So I have no doubt the people here have plenty of experience in these things, but as I live in the UK, can anybody recommend someone who would be able to fix it for a reasonable fee? (and what do you think reasonable would be?)

Thanks in advance.

Oops, my very first post has not got to a good start  I meant to post this in the PCE section, not PCFX. Could the Mods oblige?

Welcome aboard!

You're out of luck, as there is no "repair" that will make a PCE-CD play PC-FX games.  :P

Welcome. I'm in your neck of the woods but have zero repair skills. Is the problem known?

Hi chaps,

So managed to test this gizmo with my Mega Drive psu; as soon as it received power, it has a constant unending mechanical whirring sound, the laser won't move, and it won't read audio discs. The track display always shows '0'.

I suspect this is one of those notorious gear failures. I understand they sell replacements aroundabouts. Would anyone eventually be willing to fix it?

NecroPhile

Is a megadrive psu sufficient?  Googlerins says it's 9v 1200ma, whereas the beefcase psu is 9v 1450ma.

Welcome to the forum gladders and also welcome to the glorious world of PC Engine.

After you have checked the PSU ratings and confirmed that an MD one is good enough, the next thing you need to do is open the CD Drive up and check the middle cog on the laser mechanism as these are prone to crumbling. If you do then be careful (there is a guide on here somewhere) as there are a couple of tight wires you need to be careful of when removing one half of the case.

Get some pics up if you can and hopefully someone can help you.

Out of interest, where abouts in the UK are you..?

London.

I'm away this weekend, but I'll try opening it up sometime next week. I saw an opening-up vid on Youtube so I saw there are some cable ribbons to be careful with. I'll do my best to avoid damage :)

gladders

Right, I've opened it up and taken a few pictures. It looks like the answer is a new laser gear. I'll post a new thread in the repairs section, more relevant maybe :)
