As you guys already know, me and a couple of other guys(thesteve and Brraap) have been working on the component video box.  We were only going to build a few but we've been getting a lot of request for them so we decided to take it to the next level and do a kickstarter.  We just launched our kickstarter last night.  Please help spread the word and thanks for your support.

For those who signed up when I announed my 5 intial builds, I asked that you pledge through the kickstarter page.

I like the idea a lot and the product looks very cool. Sorry if I'm going to come off as critical but there's a lot of gramatical errors that should be fixed in the kickstarter. Also the video is pretty bad. I recommend looking at other successful old school game kickstarters and see how their videos look. You don't have to have a cheesy comedy act but some good lighting and somewhat scripted video will help tremendously. It honestly looks like an afterthought and isnt selling me or anyone this idea.
Didn't meen to be so negative but these are things that can easily be fixed and will benefit the kickstarter a ton.

I appreciate the feedback but on the contrary I think the point I wanted to make came across well.   It's too late to fix those issues you pointed it out now that the kickstarter is live.

I wish you guys lots of luck with your Kickstarter.  (I have a Framemeister, so don't need one).

One concern I would have if I were going to support this project is - most newer TVs don't support 240 directly do they?  Isn't 480 the lowest most will support?
glazball's game collection and wantlist

thesteve

yes and no
no TV ever officially supported 240P and they still dont
480I compatibility depending on how its implemented can work with a 240P signal
thats why you really must try the input on your TV to see how compatible it is

It's not ideal to play 240p consoles on HD/digital TVs anyway. Upscalers are a compromise for people who can't have a crt or don't care about authenticity.

I get why some people stick to modern TVs, but I'd rather just play emulation if I couldn't use a crt.

Yep imo crts are the only way to play retrogames! Granted i run them on a bvm :P But if you have to play on real hardware and wont get into crts (even though a nice sony triniton on craigslist will run you $10-20 at most...) i guess lcd/plasma, i don't think led tvs do 240p, then this could be the way to go.

turbokon

I have four lcd's including a sony bravia 52" LED LCD (KDL-52EX700) and all works with 240p.  So lcd's that doesn't work with 240p is in the minority.  I get why people rather stick with crt's because that was what these retro systems where designed to be played on.  I have two CRT's myself that I use those for testing purposes in my office.  However for my gaming needs, I rather sit comfortably on my couch and retro game through my 52" sony bravia because 240p looks amazing on it.

Btw you can easily test to see if your hdtv lcd with 240p by connecting the composite video rca (yellow rca) to the "Y" input.  If it display a black & white pictures, your set supports 240p.

I really like playing 240p games using my DLP projectors on a 96" screen. But when I want to have the full experience and not just functionally play a game, I always play on one of my four crt TVs. I recentally moved and have gone from having three rooms to myself to one. I'm still setting the single room up around my newer 27" crt which takes component. Everything else in the room will scale back as necessary after that.

So I spent some time going over the hdretrovision guys kickstarter campaign page.  Their is really good.  I don't think we will meet our goal this time so we're already planning for the next one.  We will have more pledging options (rewards) and a better video for sure.  Thanks to those pcefx'er that pledged, we really appreciate the support.

A successful Kickstarter is like 80% marketing and maybe 20% product.  You really need to have a very solid plan and push to other media outlets in place before you actually push it live.

That said, the main reason I bought one of your component chips originally was to build a box like this on my own.  Might I suggest that if you do this again add in some more options.  Like in addition to offering a bundle with all three cables, offer just the box on its own, plus box and 1 cable type.

Maybe even have a low pledge level tier which basically sells someone the component board on its own.

I'm already selling the component board on its own but never thought about having it as an reward option tho.  I do plan on an award for a bare boards of the version 1 for a lower tier pledge.

The kickstarter campaign is already coming to an end.  It's obvious we won't meet our goal but we are not giving up just yet.  We have been hard at work putting together another campaign.  We believe we have a great product and the current campaign just didn't get the point across.  Our next campaign will be better with more reward options (different configurations of our product) and at lower price points.
