Wedged it inbetween some stuff but still gives out that awesome feel. I'm really happy with this piece.
Apologies for the non Nintendo post but had to get this out there. I ran into someone selling old stuff and they asked if I would be interested in the cabinet. Of course, i was eager to add a piece to my "wife is going to kill me collection" I got it for a great price but wonder is this from a store or a home made deal? It's quite a unique piece. Also forgot the TG plexiglass for the top front. What do you guys think?

Thanks guys. I did photo the nice side. The other side the *grafx's* are a *bit scratched up/more wear* but still presentable. There was certainly maniacal laughter coming from me as I drove away from the buy. I could just see this being in a radio shack 20 years ago. Man, I love games. The best part about it is the randomness of it. It was just some dude who was getting rid of nes games and "oh, by the way would you be interested in this cabinet?" Truck tires just SCREAMING. Haha.

Im still buzzing from that grab. what a gooder. Thank you for those who express interest (towrds the display, not me) I'm not sure if I want to sell I wouldnt even know what to ask. It has very sentimental value to me for all of the time I have owned it. I might even think there are special powers being omitted from it. I will clean it up and glam it up some and post pics then. Please stay tuned.

Looks pretty awesome.  He doesn't say how much he paid for it, but he said he got a good deal on it.  I am guessing these are pretty rare.

This one you linked to seems to be in excellent condition.  I'd love to have one. I don't care. I want that damn thing.


UPDATE: Your post reminded me that there were actually several different designs for different upright kiosks.

Sometimes, for example, the kiosk simply looped a promotional video. The hardware was on display under plexiglass.

Now that I look at the one Sparky has, I don't think it was the one at my local Toys R Us back in the day... TrU had hardware locked up.

Other stores, though, had playable TG-16 demo units...but not always in a kiosk like Sparky's.

I have one and paid $100 for it.

Yeah, that's pretty cool.  I remember a similar one at my TRU running a promo video that must have at least had the CD-Rom attachment, because I specifically remember Valis II running on it.  I'm sure it was covered in plexiglass, too.  I suspect maybe the cabinet above is missing that part, some kid would have stolen the game for sure.

I hate it when people in this hobby refer to games or gaming items as "pieces" in their collection.  I've actually tried to drop the word "collection" from my vocabulary, because every game in my *library* is a game that I enjoy or appreciate playing.

That being said, that kiosk looks badass.  I'd love to have something like that.  I bet one of my desktop PVMs would fit right in there, and then I'd just use it as a baller TV stand.

I totally remember seeing that kiosk back in the day. I'd like to say a babbages had it in the corner. People had ripped out some of the laminated pages from the book though.

There was a guy selling one in Quebec City a few years back.  Never assembled, but he took it out of the box to snap pictures and post on eBay.  It did not have the plexiglass.  He wanted $300 and you had to pick up locally.  I offered him $200 over 3 years ago.  He turned me down cold even after I pointed out the kiosk was incomplete.  He reposted the eBay ad over and over again for the next two years.  The last time I contacted him I offered him $150.  That was over a year ago.  I don't know if he ever sold it, but the eBay ad is gone now.

They had standard televisions. NEC sold a line of home electronics, including tv's, I believe.

NEC's North American consumer products division didn't stick around super long. In visiting goodwill's checking Craigslist I occasionally would find NEC televisions but they were usually very very large (25 inch or larger which is too big to easily fit into my Corolla). Eventually I picked up an NEC XM29 CRT monitor to fill my need for an NEC CRT.

In about 2 years of specifically looking for NEC's at thrifts (my local Goodwill's quit taking CRTs around December though I've seen a few show up on occasion) I've found5. Keep in mind I live within single digit miles of where NEC Home Electronics former HQ was so it's quite possible that these are a bit more common in suburban Chicago than other places.

 One I couldn't fit in my car, but I bought it and had to give it back. It was an NEC DM monitor, it had internal speakers and some sort of weird RGB connector.

 One was a huge woodgrain, appeared to be working but just too big to transport or store. This was a regular television with svideo, RF and composite jacks.


Another one I found I made a video of.

I've found two 25 or so inch ones that were DOA over the years at two different goodwills too.

In the US their consumer electronics division wasn't around too long. But in some other countries they were a far more ubiquitous brand for home electronics.

There was a whole line of them called the "Authentic" series.

That TV is probably within a long walk of my house. It's just too big to fit in my car and I don't have room for a woodgrain TV of that size.
