Decent $$$. Too bad we can't all be as awesome as GameSack Joe, the coolest dude that I know! With 100,000k+ hits on videos and his site, he must do pretty good. I forget what Aaron told me the 2 ads on the forum here make, either $100 or $1000 a month, but it pays the bills for the web service, that much was true...

Aaron would be lucky to get $100/month, so $1,000 for the year would be great.

I WOULD LOVE TO BE WRONG, of course. If he is pulling in >$100, then he deserves it.

Aaron deserves $$$$ for keeping our community together.

Yeah, it was probably $100/month and I was thinking of the yearly total >$1,000, etc. Makes more sense. And that's still great, it fully pays the web hosting bills and leaves some change for other things! Anybody would be lucky to achieve at least that.

Well, to be fair I said that the plot was amazingly stupid.  Although the game is pretty freaking mediocre.

Nice vid. Since you mentioned the Turbo at the beginning of the episode, I figured we'd see a comparison between it and the Genesis with Forgotten Worlds, Daimakaimura, or Power Golf, but all good. Very nice run through of 1989.

Latest vid is up.  I'm going to start making shorter, single-game videos to upload in between the longer-form retrospectives.

Great overview man. Your quality production values shine through this new format. Keep up the good work

2 updates.  First, JoshTurboTrollX-16 and I ran our mouths for a couple of hours on Google Hangouts last night and he live-streamed it for his channel.  He edited it a it and re-uploaded it today.  Secondly, I uploaded a new "quick hits" episode today.

Very cool! I'll check the podcast-type/google whatever thing out real soon.

Not at all.  Great game.

Edit: If I thought it was bad, I wouldn't do an episode dedicated to it.  Unfortunately, on episodes that cover whatever games came out within a certain timespan, I am forced to cover games that are not good, at which point I am honest about them.  But Shinobi is the shit, which is why it got its own episode.

I can understand that, I'm hoping the chatter videos get a bit more to the point/interesting/fun when I get more comfortable with the whole sitting and staring at a camera type interviews.  Also, this video had some horrid echoing effects that had be very confused for the first 45+ minutes.  At first only I could hear it in my headphones, then it was coming across in the audio of the show!  Blech....

We'll be doing more in the future, so if you liked 'em stay tuned.  :)

CrackTiger

I was disappointed by how in the video the Saturn launch is overshadowed by a Kalinske biography, especially since most of that stuff is in dispute and it takes away from the actual Saturn talk.

Virtua Fighter for Saturn wasn't an improvement at all over the 32X version, because it wouldn't be released for another year and a half. So it wasn't disappointing in comparison to anything, since the only competition was 3DO and Jaguar. The 32X version was a surprise to everyone when it was announced after the 32X had long been considered dead and everything was already discounted. Fighting games were insanely popular at the time and the Saturn was targeting a mature audience like the Genesis, so it was the best killer app from what existed at the time.

The early launch period Saturns came in all kinds of bundles, one of which advertised at Consumers Distributing, included Panzer Dragoon. I actually went down there to buy the PD set, but found out that in my small town, the local outlet only brought in the VF set. They could have ordered it in, but not wanting to wait any longer, I just bought the VF set and got PD not long after. Consumers Distributing had a promotion where they gave you $100(?) off the Saturn if you brought in an old video game console to donate to charity. I brought a table tennis system which they took no questions asked.

The single reason I wanted a Saturn and had no interest in future consoles like the PSX, is Daytona USA. Ever since I first saw it in an arcade in a big city, I was dying to play it every chance I got and the Saturn version was far better than I imagined the upcoming generation could possibly do.

The best game/console commercials I've ever since were pre-early launch Saturn games advertised on Much Music. The were just straight game footage with the music muted. WWS used the up-close camera, so you were looking at massive player sprites running in and out of the screen. The commercials in this style for Panzer Dragoon WWS and Daytona blew my mind and stopped me from buying a 3DO just for SFFIIT. The fact that Sega ran those commercials in advance of the early launch shows how it wasn't as much of a last minute decision as most people believe that it was.

WWS is one of the only sports games I've really enjoyed since Intellivision.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! CGQuarterly

I'm definitely taking some heat over this latest episode.  I'm really happy with how the whole historical narrative section of the episode turned out.  I already covered the history of Sega up through the Genesis in a previous episode, so I had fun trying to really set up the history of the Saturn by talking about what all was going on with Sega at the time.  Although it wasn't a conscious decision, Kalinske kind of became the central figure of that narrative.  Over a pretty short period of time, he went from being this guy who took on Nintendo and made SoA a success to someone who was basically pushed out.

I can see where the way I worded that line made it sound like the 32X version of the game came out first, which was not my intent.  That being said, the fact that the 32X game came out in late 1995 is not a good excuse for the Saturn game not being superior.  I'm not saying that it *is* better, but Virtua Fighter Remix looks a lot better and is what they should have worked towards in the first place.

Completely agree about Daytona USA.  Complaints about the draw-in really annoy me.  You can certainly tell that you aren't playing the arcade version, but it re-creates the experience and looks quite good.

ConsoleGeek

I just want to say I'm a fanboy of your videos, you really do a great job and I always make sure to watch them as soon as they come up.
No criticisms here, keep up the great work!

That's fair.  My priority when looking for still images to include in my videos is the quality of the image.  So while it would have been really cool for all of the images to hail from the early 90's, it would have meant lower quality pictures in many cases.

If you do a similar video in the future, maybe just pick up a complete set of one of the overproduced hockey card series for that year? I still find cheap sealed boxes of packs from the early to mid 90's at random corner and dollar stores.

I think NHL '94, as odd as it may sound, is my favorite video game, ever.  I am not sure of a game I have played more over the twenty-two years it has been out.  I can always pick it up.

Thanks for the video, J.

Gredler

Jibb - I commented on the video but also want to follow up with you here too and tell you how much I enjoyed the episode. I thought it was great, and really enjoyed how much you talked about Jim Simmons, and wish I could've talked to you and told you some stories from him and George who I worked with a couple years ago for a while, and they told me a bunch of great stories. George (Jim's brother who did most of the art for the game, a fact that might've added some more flavor to the video) did the sprites in 3D and baked them down and then painted over them. He told me that it allowed him to animate one character in 3d, then have consistent scale and not have warping/morphing in the different directions. It was awesome working with those guys, and am so proud to have a credit along side them on a title :)  I probably could've gotten you an interview with them, hindsight doh!

Sadler, I totally agree.  I miss Retroblast and wish he hadn't switched formats.  But I understand where he's coming from.  He got that Vive deal and it's all he cares about right now, gaming-wise.  So doing a retro podcast would just seem like a chore for him.  Hopefully he comes back to it.
