@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

This was a CD that I somehow couldn't burn properly from all the usual sources, so I picked up a copy on ebay a few months ago.

I haven't had a chance to play it much but I liked what I have played, I hope I can play it more this week.

This is my time to be a star!

When I was a kid I used to watch Robotech all the time.  Later on I enjoyed Macross + and Macross Zero a good deal.  The rest of the series, not so much, but I digress.  I saw a preview of this from some year's CES and thought that it looked really cool and was sad that it never came out stateside.

I've still never played this game but I've always thought that it looked interesting.  I think I'm going to go ahead and buy all of the game of the weeks that I want to play but don't own so that I can participate during said weeks rather than just get them off of ebay/wherever and then wait a week for the game to show up in the mail too late to really join in on the fun.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

VenomMacbeth

As a huge Macross fan, I've been meaning to pick this one up.  The only Macross game I have is the one on the Famicom...and I call myself a fan -.-

Is this one better or worse than Scuramburu'd Varukyrie?

EDIT: I just realized I also have DYRL for the Saturn.  I always forget about that one for some reason.

I don't really know, since I need to try mine out for this GotW yet. But you could give SDF Macross on PS2 a shot, since it includes both the 1982 TV series as well as the 1984 movie as playable storylines. Made by Sega and has pretty intuitive controls which can't be said about all 3D Macross games.

I hope I don't spur anyone to buy Alice in Wonderdream / Fushigi no Yume no Alice on my behalf. Ootake is your friend.

I need to download an ISO and play this; need to see if it's worth picking up.

This is one of my favorites and most played shooters for the PCE, and I have always treasured both this game and Love Song alike.  I love the giant full screen bosses and classic Macross soundtrack.   Scrambled Valkyrie is an amazing game also, no need to compare the two - get both for sure.  And I second PS2 Macross by Sega AM2, it's one of the best Macross games ever made IMO.  I have them all in my personal library except for Scrambled Valkyrie, but I have borrowed that from a friend and played it extensively.  Want it, just never really bought many Super Nintendo/SFC titles and it's not a focus of mine.  But I should think about nabbing it soon!  These are the top 4 Macross games (on console, anyway) if you ask me.  I enjoy the arcade games also, especially Macross 2.

ClodBusted

I played Scrambled Valkyrie before on an emulator, until I bought it on cartridge last year. 1 month after I got the game I finally had time and the right mood to play it on my SNES. Just to find out I received a corrupt cartridge that played Ok but with scrambled graphics. D'oh. Talk about Scrambled Valkyries.

Whatever, sounds like I'll be in the need for an SD2SNES thing someday. I wish they'd finally support ALL mappers and the FX chip.

I still wonder if there's an English version floating around out there.  If no one remembers, this is one of the games that the secretary at TTI told me was basically finished, but had some glitches or something near the end of the game, & it just became unprofitable to release by that time, as the Turbo was on it's way down. :(

I was always wondering this since all the mags had the release as August 93 and it was only two months away from that release date.  There's gotta be one floating around, but by now you'd think it would have gotten leaked.

I would rather see a translation of Ein No Love Song personally. Do you really want to hear the Robotech version Lynn Minmay's songs? Ugh..

geise

Lol.  No I don't want to hear that.  However, we don't know what they did to localize it.  It could've just been the text when selecting your weapons and possibly subtitled cut-scenes.  Doubtful but I can dream.

ParanoiaDragon

I'm figuring it was dubbed, with maybe exception of any vocal tracks, but that's only a guess on my part.  I haven't played this game in forever, so I don't recall any vocal tracks??  I have no idea what there budget was., & I really can't say for sure it was was indeed Macross 2036 or Robotech 2036.  Me thinks that calling it Robotech would up the price tremendously from what I used to hear in regards to Harmony Gold.  But IIRC, it was being touted as Robotech 2036 in publications......

I don't see how original Macross music could not sound nostalgic to anyone, even if they heard it for the first time today. It's some extremely romantic old fashioned sounding stuff, even for 1982.

I like some of the Robotech tunes, not Minmei's three songs of course, but the opening and incidental. The voice acting is also extremely good. The voice actors were so much more natural sounding in those old dubs.

Like all things "Robotech" though it should go permanently out of print forever so we can get the Macross stuff flowing back into the US. Harmony Gold has screwed Americans out of a half dozen Macross things at this point because of their squatting on the rights of a 30 year old dub made by a guy who is now dead. Releasing a remixed version of Love Live Alive decades after it came out in Japan is not taking proper care of a franchise. Fuck those guys.

As for 2036, it's great. I like the SFC game a lot more, also the arcade shooters based on DYRL, Macross II, and Macross Plus, but my favorite thing about 2036, and also Love Song, is that it looks more like a genuine sequel to DYRL than anything else I can think of. The character and mecha designs are terrific. Nothing made now would look that right. I have an old issue of B Club that has some of the image art made for this game printed larger than it is the game manual.

Sliding strips.

Stuff that sticks up and some of the stars, little ships and maybe garbage are sprites.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! A Black Falcon

This is a fun game when you're actually playing it, but the cutscenes are annoyingly long!  It isn't a long game, but like half of the game is cutscenes.  It gets tedious.  And it's a somewhat easy and basic game, too.  It looks pretty good, but while it's fun to play the low difficulty, the somewhat simplistic gameplay, and overlong cutscenes hold it back.  It also doesn't help that I have very little nostalgia for Macross, so I'm just judging it as a game and not as something connected to something else.

I mean, this IS an above average game, but I wouldn't call it the incredible classic I've seen some say it is.  It's 'just' a fun little shooter with nice graphics but some issues.

EmperorIng

At least you can skip the cutscenes. This isn't Right Stuff garbage we're talking about.

SignOfZeta

The cut scenes may "hold it back" for some but they were the major selling point of this game when it was released.
IMG

EmperorIng

Wasn't it conceived as some semi-official sequel to the SDF Macross anime anyhow? In the same vein as Southern Cross and whatnot?

ClodBusted

I'd say Macross 2036 belongs to the Macross universe, while the TV series Superdimension Cavalry Southern Cross, Superdimension Century Orguss and Superdimension Fortress Macross itself were released under the "superdimension" banner without having been connected storyline-wise in Japan.
However they all feature transformable fighters and similar themes about space exploration and contact with alien life forms, just as Genesis Climber Mospeada did.

However, regarding Orguss keep in mind I haven't watched this one TV series yet.

Its better than Southern Cross and they only transform into two different modes. Been some years since I have watched it though.

Back when this game came out there were very few Macross things out there. Just the (then decade old) TV show, the movie, and Flashback. Seeing new VFs and new Hal character designs with music from the movie made this as official as anything could be at the time. However,  considering when it came out, I would assume this timeline has been retconned out of cannon, much like Macross II. I can't say for sure since I don't recall hearing anyone talk about it specifically, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Macross canon is pretty crazy. This thread sums it up nicely:

EmperorIng

So playing this game for the GotW convinced me to pick up the game to try it in the comfort of my own Duo.

My second time playing it, I 1CC'd the game. What an easy game! It showers you with lives (courtesy those cute Minmay icons), and the game is a pretty smooth ride, even up until the final boss.

Does anyone know how to activate that second menu, with the "Unrivaled" / Player options? And what the unrivaled option even does?

There's a lot of things to like: the Area 88/UN Squadron "shop" to select weapons - though since you don't "spend" any points to buy weapons it's made even easier to get the good stuff. Great boss designs, even if most of them were pushovers. The enemy design is pretty lame though. Circles, triangles, and the occasional battlepod. I see this game compared to Thunder Force in some reviews; well Technosoft had much better stage enemies, for sure.

My favorite levels have to be the huge armada fight, and the interior of the giant warship. The former for its grand scope, and the latter for a stage that finally had some interesting terrain as opposed to the flat levels that typify the game. It was both neat and a little disappointing to learn that you could safely touch the walls and floors in the game (contrary to most shooters). It took the sting out of trying to navigate the narrow corridors of the ship. Boss fights seemed to be designed to cheese your way through with the VF health-bar - your ship is now so huge that it's significantly harder to dodge. The last boss really drove this home with the annoying, erratically-moving snake attack.

I'll have to see what Hard and Very Hard offer - in my heart of hearts I'm hoping for more enemies and more aggression, instead of the lazy "up the boss health" stuff. For what it's worth now, it was an enjoyable easy ride through what is (going by Zeta's post) essentially high-quality Macross fanfiction.

PunkCryborg

Everyone says it's so easy but I haven't been able to pull it off. Guess I need to find out where those lives are. Some of the weapons that you can get are awesome and some are terrible and that throws me off.
I just picked up Scrambled Valkyrie for SFC last week which is supposed to be pretty good too but was hoping to clear this first. The arcade game by NMK is also worth checking out

EmperorIng

Scrambled Valkryie is very good. Better and more difficult than Macross 2036 (which I like quite a bit), and with a much nicer "transforming" gimmick.

Since there are so few enemies on Normal, i naturally spent a lot of time moving up and down, looking for the hidden icons/invincibility buffs.

I still need to check out the arcade games.
