Magicoal Walkthrough?

I suck at moon-speak games.

I've decided to give another go at Magicoal and seem to be stuck pretty early on.  Does anyone know if there's a walkthrough out there for this game?  It looks like a ton of fun, but I'm stuck in a burning village and don't know what to do to progress farther.

Is there a way to switch between characters?  It looks like one of the spells in the spell book allows for that, but I don't have it yet. I have a spell that keeps me from getting harmed by the fire, but the only building that isn't burning won't let me in, and everyone else is dead.  And I can't exit the village.

Any ideas?

CrackTiger

I believe that that was the first place I got stuck at for a bit. I think that I finally progressed by finding people further out (southwest?) than I expected.

Thanks, I'll dig around some more. It feels like I've scoured every inch of that town and then jumped around it again for good measure, but I'm probably missing something obvious.  I can be pretty good at that. :)

ParanoiaDragon

Which town, is it the one that catches on fire?  It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure you can switch characters right away, maybe by pressing select?

Select lets you cycle through your currently equipped spells/weapons and Run brings up your inventory screen.  Maybe I need to pull out a Tap and a second controller to access the other character....

I spend some more time wandering around the burning village and still no luck. :(  I'm in the process of moving and won't have internet access at the new place for a few days, but I'll post screenshots of the dialog that comes up when I try to get in the building and the text that shows up when I touch a scroll/piece of paper near the bottom of the map.  Maybe someone would be able to decipher which would lead to a clue.

From reading other people's reviews/comments on the internet, it seems we're supposed to be escaping from the town...  :-k

Side note: Pressing Run and Select simultaneously does not reset the game!

ParanoiaDragon

Hmmm, while I haven't beaten the game, I have gotten out of that village.  I'll try to think of what I did, not to mention how I switched characters.  If need be, I'll boot the game up & see if I still have my save file.

I may be totally misremembering, but I think there's a location where you can mix some "ingredients" for a potion.  The problem is figuring out which ingredients to use (possibly in a specific order).

roflmao

Once I figure it out, I'll post back here.  It's on the back-burner for the time being, but I'm sure I'll play it again in the near future.

Okay, so I've been playing some Magicoal recently, and here are a few things I've found.

First, I also got stuck in the burning village early in the game for a while.  The solution is that you have to use the key, which should be in one of your characters' inventories, as an item. It will unlock the door of that one intact building in town and allow you to proceed.  Put the key into a characters' active inventory and use it on the door.  Remember that you can switch between characters via the top button in the pause menu that "character select" thing at the game start is kind of pointless.

More importantly, I'm having issues with the Memory Base 128.  Magicoal is supposedly designed to be MB128-compatible, and it's on the MB128 compatibility list, but unless I'm missing something, MB128 support is in fact completely broken.  With both my (real) copy of the game on my TG16+CD (w/Super System Card) or an ISO of the game in Ootake, after the MB128 is plugged in/enabled in Ootake's menu, the game goes into MB128 mode, but always fails to actually load games.  You can now copy Magicoal files between the system and MB128, though not other games' files -- this doesn't have a full memory manager as far as I can see.  However, with the MB128 plugged in, you can only load from the MB128, not the system.  This is an issue when files you load from the MB128 don't work!  After hitting the button to load, the screen goes black and stays that way; need to turn off the power to get out of this, since the usual Run+Select to reboot shortcut doesn't work in Magicoal.  This is really annoying -- few enough games support the MB128 directly as it is, and it's so incredibly convenient versus copying around blocks of backup memory data from the MB128 or Tennokoe Bank that I would at least want it to work in the few games it supports.  Bah!

Third, the magic...  okay, so you have various spells.  Your two characters each can cast a different selection of magic, and you'll get more during the game.  Simple enough.  But sometimes I can't use some spells, and I don't know why!  Is there some magic meter I can't see (or recognize) which determines when I can use spells?  Because like, why could I use the fire shield for some time but not the magic-ball shot?  I don't get it at all.  If there's some kind of meter, it should actually make it clear where it is.  I think some kinds of item fixed this, but I'm not sure why.  I imagine the language barrier is the biggest problem here, but it is unclear, there's nothing I could see that clearly states why the magic wasn't working...

And last, your partner's AI is TERRIBLE!  Basically, both characters are on screen at all times, but unless you're playing the game two player co-op (recommended if you can), you've got to rely on the AI to control the character you're not controlling at the moment.  You can switch characters in the menu, but one is always AI.... and they're USELESS.  Basically the AI will stand around and fire at the monsters, without taking in to consideration things like "walls" or "trees" that could be in the way.  They will also sometimes stand there firing at the wall, keeping you from going around to attack an enemy, because the screen has to keep both players visible at all times.  You could switch back and forth to force them to move forward, but that's awkward (you switch in the menu, not with a button, after all) and annoying.  Even slightly better partner AI would have been great, not because this game is hard -- the beginning, at least, is pretty easy -- but because the partner is a problem sometimes.

Despite these problems, though, I do like the game so far; it's okay to good, I would say.  The game really has fantastic graphics; this is one of the better-looking games I've seen on the system, for sure.  There's almost no animation in cutscenes, but ingame graphics look really nice.  The game also has a somewhat unique balance between adventure and action elements -- don't play Magicoal expecting it to just be all fighting like Secret of Mana or something, it isn't.  You spend time wandering around towns trying to save people (can get items or magic if successful), talking to people to progress the story, etc.  There are also some basic puzzle elements I've already seen, such as that bit with the key I mention at the top of this post.  This is a fairly simple game, but it is fun.  Of course the adventure elements would be better if I actually knew much Japanese, but still, it's alright; the combat in this game is fairly simple anyway, so I don't mind the breaks.

I never finished this game (I don't use guides/FAQs), but I intend to conquer it one day. I skimmed your post because I didn't want to spoil anything... But the only thing I would add is that I thought that the Red Book music nicely complimented the game.

Now I am in the mood to pull out Legend of Valkyrie, too.

I remember the last boss of the game being a real pain in the ass to beat, and sadly with the biggest slowdowns and blinking i ever saw on PcE. But i loved that game, one of the most beautiful of the system as already said.

Not sure of it's the same boss you're talking about but I got stuck at some point in the game were I couldn't beat a boss, so much so that I gave up definitely. Maybe I should try again.

Black Falcon - thanks so much for posting your findings. I got stuck in the burning village years ago. Now I have a reason to play the game again.

As far as the MB128, I've experienced the same problem (posted here). I suppose it just doesn't work with Magicoal, period. At least I can still use it as a giant Tennokoe Bank with the editors on other games.

Here'[s something I forgot to mention: YOU CAN JUMP IN THIS GAME!  You can even jump over fences!  Just about every other top-down RPG-ish game on 4th gen consoles doesn't let you do this, but Magicoal does, and it's pretty awesome.  Great feature!

The only 'spoiler' in that post is for that one puzzle multiple people have gotten stuck on quite early in the game.  The rest is just a description of issues, and things I like, about the game.

The only thing to note is that if you don't have the key, make sure you've done everything else in the village.  The game is fairly straightforward, though -- events happen when you get near them or bump in to people, etc, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Bah, I missed that... the game has a MB128 logo on the cover, it should work!  NEC's shoddy quality control strikes again, clearly.  This, Monster Maker... they needed to do full bug-fixing before shipping games!  The games are good, but would be better without these problems.

If you appreciate that, you should try Fray CD, another RPG'ish-looking overhead shooter.

Shooter?  Magicoal isn't really a shooter... you  do have some projectile magic, but the game has too much exploration, basic puzzle-solving, town parts, etc. to be a shooter.  It's really an action-adventure game, more like a Secret of Mana than Fray CD... though different from either.

As for Fray, I've played a little of that; looks like a non-autoscrolling shmup to me, really.  I actually have the (Japan-only) Game Gear Fray game, and that's basically a non-autoscrolling shmup.

What would you call it?  Shmup/RPG?  Run & gun/RPG?  Just an Action-RPG?  Maybe it's the latter, but it's more of a straightforward action game than most action-RPGs for sure... it looks kind of like Legend of the Valkyrie except with RPG towns and more linear levels, and I kind of think of that game as being a run & gun pretty much (with platform jumping sometimes).

Oh, and the Fray game for Game Gear really is a shmup in which you can choose to stop moving forward.  It's simpler than the TCD game.

I would say that Fray is an Action Run-'n-Gun with RPG elements.

I know this is an old thread but I just got this in the post and quite enjoying it although it has moment where it's quite frustrating.  I also encountered that memory 128 bug so I've had to copy a save file into the base ram unit.

From what I can gather Rhun gets spells from either finding them by searching items, treasure chests or beating bosses to beating bosses in a certain way and from scrolls he finds and even from buying from shops and sellers.  These scrolls seem to be random in obtaining spells.  Some drain all your mana away while others will refill it or give you a complete new spell to even giving you nothing!

Melvy can obtain spells from talking to spirits or fairies if you see them floating around then switch to her.  also she just like Rhun can obtain spells from boss fights, searching places and treasure chests etc.

If you find that one of the 2nd characters acting stupid and you want to move along press bother button I & II and that forces them to follow you.

There a mana bar in the form of a blue orb under each characters name.  As you use more magic attacks the blue mana depletes and turns red which I assume is when your mana is depleted.  Thankfully if you can stand still both your HP bar and Mana fills back up.

Rhun's shield spells will not work with certain spells so you may have to play around and see which ones work together.

It also looks like Melvy's base element is water but you can change this so she can use other spells.  I not sure when or how you get this spell but there is one that looks like a colored bangle which you have to equip and while pressing down the attack button will charge up a rotating element icon above melvy's head.  Here you have to try and time the right element that corresponds with the magic attack. So if you want to use fire magic on Melvy then you need to make sure she is imbued with the element of fire.  You will probably have to do this every time the game loads into a new area.

Ok going to try and translate some stuff here.  Bear with me as I don't know if I can translate things perfectly but hopefully it will work in a way that benefits you guys.

Working on this slowly .......

The Title screen has 3 options.

START
DATA LOAD
BATTLE

This is the BATTLE option and requires you to load up one of your save files and you can only alter the magics/spirits gained from current play session, and while in this room I think you can only Control Rhun or Melvy in here.  You can read up about the game's system but there are 5 books at the top screen.  Here you can battle with each other using which ever save file you have loaded that will contain all the present save file spells and items you have obtained and equip up to 4 of them and use them to battle each other one to one.

This boss unfortunately you have a time limit.  I found it is best not to spam any spells at him otherwise he will deflect them and just stand in the same spot deflecting them till the time runs out and then game over. You should move around a bit till he teleports  and then when he re appears hit him with a magic spells.  Most spells take a moment to charge up so pre judge when and where he will re-appear it might help.  Just avoid his ice attack and heal if you need to by taking potions.  He only takes a few hits and then he's down!

Yes I know this is an old thread but if incase you are still wondering about this.  I hope the below pic helps!
Rhun has no problems with his spells since he is a straight forward Wizard in the making.  Melvy the 17 year old girl who can talk to the elemental spirits and fairie folk can summon their power but......

Unless you can read the japanese stuff I can just advise you to look at the magic icon spells and match their color to the element balls which are present on each game map.

IMG

there are two spells however that can change the element and allow Melvy to use almost any spell at any map but it's random!  However you can try and get it stop on the desired element if you have the patience or luck!  The spell icon looks like a multi colored bracelet

small early tips for early on in the game!

Just before you enter the village try and build up the gold dropped by the zombies in the previous map.  Once you enter the map with the new town....

Some things to do before it burns.

You will witness a young boy Wiz arguing with a water sprite/spirit and he will turn the water toxic.
IMG

Switch to Melvy as she can talk to them and pick the FIRST Option to save the sprite.  Take the sprite to any pond that has clear water (there are 3) in the town and you will be rewarded with a new spell for Melvy.  If you do not do this in time the sprite will die!
IMG

Throughout the game there is about 3 areas where you can buy stuff.  This is one of them, a village store.
IMG

Select the bottom option and buy as many scrolls as you can while controlling Rhun the wiz boy.
IMG

Hopefully one of those scrolls with give Rhun the fly spell.

notice there is an item up there on the roof?  Use the fly spell to land up there.  It's a jewel give that to Melvy.  Jewels are important for Melvy.  Just like scrolls the effect is random.  Best of all they give Melvy some new spells.  You can reset the game and try them again for different stuff!
IMG

Notice the item on the tree top?  It's a scroll fly up there and grab it for Rhun.

There are a total of 64 spells to collect between Rhun and Melvy.  Not all are needed to beat the game but if you just want to complete the spell book then that's cool.

One of the spells I find pretty useless.  Rhun just plays some music and summons what appears to be a 1 arm naked sprite lady thing.....

IMG

Book of Spells list all the spells you will find.  Here I found 61 out of 64.  The rest is items you'll find throughout your playthrough.  If you use up an item in your inventory then that page will go blank again.

I want to give a big shoutout to Digi.k for having yet another helpful translation of the game's menu + some helpful hints; it made jumping into this game so much more smooth.

There are a few parts that will probably trip people up that I figured I'd add in case someone is REALLY stuck.

In the ghost town, you need to get three things to remove the curse. To do this you essentially need to play hide-and-seek with the resident ghosts. All the monsters are invulnerable until you remove the curse. The lady by the well will hop around to a few different locations (well, basement of the large house, and so on), finally cluing you in to the location of one of the items in one of the town wells itself. Some guy with a hat in another house will tell you his item is in his bedroom filled with zombies. The final is inside the large mansion itself. Afterwards you can head into one of the town wells to continue the game.

===

In the water palace, where you have to set the blue stone into the central chamber, there are lots of teleporters. Two of them lead to mermaid statues who will give you clues. Destroy them to open up two additional teleporters. There will be text-boxes that pop up before you enter these chambers. There are three of these chambers in total: left, middle, and right.

You have to enter into them in the right order: you will know which order is correct because your characters will say something each time (if it's wrong they say nothing). I believe the order is Left, Right, Middle.

===

In the castle area, you need to make some type of medicine but you don't know the ingredients. You have to have Melvy talk to the little punk wizard (and I think you need to have some story-related items in her inventory - doll? Book? Harp? I had them all in there just in case) to get him to tell you the right ingredients. Pay attention to the kanji(?). Of the three ingredients in the middle garden, you only need two of them. I can't be sure but I THINK mixing all three makes a potion. I can't remember (will try to confirm this later). This will be useful for surviving the frustrating boss fights ahead.

Also, you will see a guard fiddle with some statues. Make sure you examine them! One of them will have a switch that deactivates the fire-breathing statues a few floors up.

This boss is proving to be a real pain in the ass, mainly because it seems hard to keep your partner from walking into his attacks, which sometimes gets you into the crossfires as well.

The image above seems to imply that you are better off unequipping your AI partner so they don't do anything stupid. I might try that later.

This game has been not too shabby so far, though the game's enemy AI has a distinctly amateurish Japanese-PC tinge to it - everything mostly rushes towards you (sans a few wizards), and the bosses randomly shamble about. I don't think I've found half of the spells available; I can't imagine where they all are, or if you can even get them all in one playthrough.

 I don't think I've found half of the spells available; I can't imagine where they all are, or if you can even get them all in one playthrough.
Yes that is right. two are only needed.

Ah Maybe I should revisit this.  I think after that scene of the punk wizard you have a mini boss fight and after he runs I think you need to catch him with an attack before he disappears and if you hit him on time before he dashes away he will leave you with a spell....

I'm kinda thinking about making a blog on these games with translations of the menu systems at some stage but just can't seem to get the time..

You can get all the spells in one playthrough although a few of the spells you can only get around the end of the game just before the final boss fight..

There is a later stage where you arrange the map and I think you do it in this order.

Yeah, rearranging the dungeon was a surprisingly novel and nifty concept that I didn't expect the game to pull. It's probably the most creative moment in the game though. I think any path to the exit works, though I had to make sure I checked out those colored dots - at least one of them gave Melvy a new spirit to use.

The final area is a real pain. Four elemental dungeons, with midbosses + bosses, and once you go to that chapter you lose any chance of restocking on potions.

There are some real aggravating parts that took me far too long to figure out, so for this topic's benefit, here they are:

===

When you are at a castle after killing the evil sorcerer, after a scene, all hell will be breaking loose at night. The lower-right corner is where you will need to be to trigger a boss and the next scene.

In this scene, you'll need to make your way up the castle, flipping all the switches you find - make sure you start by going to the right, as at the top of that section, is a flip switch that does... something. I don't know, but it looks important.

After rescuing the green-haired girl going further up will bring you to a chamber where you fight a trio of assassins. If you are good, killing the last one by the crack in the wall will reveal two chests. This is usually too hard to pull off, so don't worry.

The green-haired girl will be outside and tell you something. Go just outside the doorway and examine the torches to open the locked door.

===

In the next scene, in the assault on the castle, examine all of the shields; on two of the shields (opposite sides of the castle), they can be moved to reveal passageways.

After beating the hammer boss, return to the knight towards the beginning of that screen. He will give you a mirror which reveals false walls. There is a false wall right before the hammer boss's room. You can tell because the tiles are different than normal wall tiles.

===

On the mountain leading to the magical realm, a winged guy will blow you away from the gate. You first need to talk to a boy selling stuff (this is your last chance to buy spells and potions, so make it count). Talk to him a few times (maybe having important things in your characters' inventory?) and something will trigger to allow you to approach the winged man, who will release a tiger. Defeat the tiger and confront the winged man on the southern-right corner of the map.

===

In the wind realm, take the teleporters until you see a fairy, and have Melvy catch her. Afterward, cast a green barrier spell on yourself to make it past the green tornado in the center. You will have to do some platforming to reach the boss.

===

In the earth realm, you will need to have the knight midboss be charging at you to hurt him. Use Rhun and fire projectiles as he does so.

That last part during the trial of the 4 element dungeons.  The water dungeon has to be the last one so you cannot select it first.  Instead try and complete the wind one which I think was green color.

The boss is a little tricky to beat but if you can defeat her Rhun can summon her as a normal magic attack for devastating damage especially on all those bosses.

I haven't tried otherwise yet, but I figured the water dungeon had to be last because that demon-general tool is hanging out there waiting for another one of your righteous ass-whoopings.

And by asswhooping I mean spamming that rock-needle spell, or that shadow grab spell while your partner runs around.
