No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Having read the Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania comparison threads I was inspired to start another one. I think this one is very interesting since the game engine (or how the game plays) is pretty much identical, even the music and graphics are the same although slightly enhanced for PC-Engine. No problems with scrolling like in the Ninja Gaiden.
I grew up with the NES and Nintendo World Cup so I know that game inside and out. To my suprise I was able to beat the Nekkutsu Koko Soccer in one sitting without much sweat. Pretty much every trick I learned as a kid with the NES game I was able to pull off. I'm aware that the Nintendo World Cup was a reskin of Nekkutsu High School Soccer for Famicom but I really I think that the world cup theme adds a lot of flavour. In today's perspective slightly offensive national stereotypes, the intermission tunes/pictures etc.
I don't have the Famicom cart so I wonder if the PC engine game is just a remaster of that or continuing the story where the Famicom game ended, not that it matters unless you can read japanese.

I have never really liked the other Nekkutse games but both these football games are just blast to play.

The story seems to be the same. Kunio-kun, who is in the dodgeball club, is asked by Misako (talking with Kunio for the first time) to join the soccer club so he can help them out of a pinch and win the championship. The cut-scenes in the HuCard version seems pretty much identical to the Famicom version. The CD version has more detailed cut-scenes with voice acting.

BTW not to be rude but you misspelled the title of the game quite badly so I think people will have trouble understanding what game you are refering to (I was confused myself). The full title of the game is:
"Nekketsu Kōkō Dodge Ball-bu: Soccer Hen"
or more easily type out:
"Nekketsu Koukou Dodge Ball-bu: Soccer Hen"
and it translates to Nekketsu High-School Dodge Ball Club: Soccer Edition.

Both the Pce cd and mega drive versions have extra levels.

Megadrive has an extra charge shot button and runs better. I'm not sure how to play it though especially with a different interface for setting up teams.

Do you mean that the players run better or the game? I haven't spent much time with these games as they don't interest me, but the main difference I noticed is that the PC Engine version has more shading and detail while the MD version looks equally close to the Famicom and PCE versions.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

MD version runs better. Even the sound quality is nicer than the Huey. It's honestly pretty impressive

Pce version is great but it's more a 1:1 port. A little more sluggish than the genny

JoshTurboTrollX

Kunio Soccer PCE meaning Huey or Super CD?

I find that the all versions are fun, but the two PCE versions are less flickery/slowdown.  To me that makes them better.

4 players on PCECD is pretty much the most perfect way to play.  :D
Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Sorry about the spelling, I corrected it.
Interesting to hear about the story differences. Would be neat to play these with a translation patch. So the CD version retains the gameplay of the Hucard version but adds extra levels and cutscenes.
Multiplayer sounds like a blast, the NES version also supported the four score. Would be cool to gather old mates whom I used to play the NES version with as a child and play few games.

I didn't even know that a Megadrive version exist. Gotta try that one. Does the extra charge shot button have the same function as pressing both action buttons on the NES and PCE versions (scissors kick)?

Based on what I have played so far it seems that for me the ultimate version would be the PCE game combined with the World Cup theme of the western NES release.

What's wrong with the Kunio-kun theme? I love Kunio-kun games and the story is great.
