so, this will likely be a tough one.

what're the must-own pce hu-cards? (oh, ones that either don't have a u.s. version at all, or ones who's u.s. version is somehow really inferior)

i need to justify a potential investment in a dope region+svid modded duo-r

Odonadon

The games you definitely need to own are the ones you like and you feel have good re-playability :)  It's personal preference.

What types of games do you like?  Perhaps we can recommend some in the same genre.

OD

CosMind

really, any fun game that doesn't require knowledge of the japanese language to get through/fully enjoy.
honestly, i'm very open-minded.

For me at least:

Bonk's Revenge/PC Genjin 2:  I think it's one of the best platformers going and has awesome replay value
Gunhed/Blazing Lazers:  Fantastic vertical shooter.  Well balanced, nice graphics, fast, good sound
Alien Crash:  I'm a sucker for video pinball and this is my fav.  Devil's Crush is the same but different.  Time Cruise is cool too
Baseball games:  I love baseball and I find the Power League series (which World Class Baseball is the first game in)  to be a lot of fun.  The Namco baseball games (RBI Baseball is the first) are good too
Neutopia and Neutopia II:    best RPG going

Gomola Speed: If you like puzzle-action games, especially the classic Snake / Worm games, then you should give this a chance. Be forewarned, however, that you might get blisters on your left thumb (you have to circle your opponents and the direction pad gets a workout). This is a great game, IMO, that is rarely discussed, even here!

ccovell

D-Lite and Keranu, did you notice that he asked for games that were unavailable or inferior on the Turbografx?

So, some recommendations:

After Burner II
Bomberman '94
Coryoon
Detana!! Twinbee
Final Soldier
Kyuukyoku Tiger
Out Run
Parodius
Salamander
Street Fighter II'
Valkyrie no Densetsu

[edit] I second Gomola Speed, though it may not be for everyone.  Esteban, did you know that I found several debug/cheat codes for the game?  Check out this link for the info: http://forums.magicengine.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=1821

I syand by the baseball thing and also agree with your list.

Gomola Speed is very cool and is different than any game I've played.

All the must-haves other than SFIICE actually made it over here intact, so I guess thats one good thing NEC/TTI did. :P
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

I heartily disagree!  See ccovell's list for many Japan only gems, and don't forget the Arcade Card, Batman, Photograph Boy, Don Doko Don, and Image Fight.

does valkyrie no densetsu require knowledge of japanese to play?

also, darius plus, or super darius?  i'm guessing that likely the only difference is the music - if so, are the tunes more preferable on the hu or disc rev?  if there are more differences than the music, what are they?

Didn't notice that, but I now that I think about it, I wonder if he meant "inferior" or "superior". Either way, J.J. and Jeff is superior to Kato and Ken :D .

As far as I remember SFIICE was never released for the TG-16.I agree with all the games that Covell suggested. And A couple others-Jigoku Meguri (aka Bonze Adventure) and Mizubaku Adventure (aka Liquid Kids).

:) stevek666 is my other moniker :). As I posted at magicengine, I was tempted to cheat and see the ending, but I couldn't do that. One of these days I'll finish the game the old-fashioned way... then I'll have fun with the debug codes :).

Now, Horror Story & Chris' Adventure (Hihou Densetsu Kris No Bouken), those are two games that have been frustrating the h*ll out of me (maybe I'm losing my skills, or perhaps its too humid in New Jersey, but progress has been slow and painful for me). I wouldn't mind dabbling with debug/cheat codes for them... but I won't.

I assume that by 'must-haves', CosMind is looking for a list of some of the more enjoyable HuCards that stand out from the rest of the good ones. Otherwise, listing the crappy HuCards would make a shorter list.

I started a list, before quickly realizing that they were all also on Turbo.

Yes it does because there are some npcs that ask you questions and you need to get the right answer otherwise you be sent back a bit on that stage.. but you can get round it with trial and error.  The real hard bit is killing that last boss which I'm having difficulty with..

Oh I also wanna add:

Gradius
I'll second Salamander (basically next the to the MSX version the pce's has fantastic music not to mention its one of the hardest shmups)
Bomberman '93 (mostly because out of all the bomberman HUcard games imo this has the best BGM's although '94 has the graphics and presentation)
Splatterhouse (japan version since its uncensored)
Devil Crash/crush
Magical Chase
Parasol Stars
Dungeon Explorer
Hana Tahka Dakka!?! (hope i spelt that right)
Bloody Wolf

Nope not kidding. I prefer the J.J. and Jeff characters and the spray attack method (it's a lot easier and funner to use than having to turn your character around to rip ass). And as far as the piss thing is concerned, I think it's a lot funnier that the character just stands there bouncing up and down without piss coming out :D ! It's like "WTF is he doing!?". Perhaps it's even more extreme and he is humping a light pole or something! :D

Yeah this is something I have always agreed with too. We missed out on a ton of great CD games, but there are only a few REALLY good HuCard games we didn't get.

All most valid but you can get those two on,Taito Legends 2 for the PS2  #-o

Still there worth it if ya don't have a PS2.

I have Liquid Kids for the PCE not a bad port.. but it is missing some background scrolling effects.

just the top 4's for ya :-"

That's the only difference I noticed.

I remember finding an actual Liquid Kids cabinet in an obscure arcade in a small eastern Washington town in the mid or late '90s. I was just visiting some friends who lived in a nearby small town so it was the only time I ever got to play it.

I was so pleased with my find since I was already a fan of the Turbo/PCE port. I remember thinking how well the port graphics held up after playing the arcade for a bit. They were basically spot-on save for an extra background layer or something.

That's some thing to find Liquid Kids in the arcades back then.

As for myself i never ran into one back then.

I think the frist time i herd about it is when i was into collecting "imports for the saturn.

Herd alot of buzz about and how obscure it was if you got it for the saturn.

By the time i found out what it was going for i said no thanks.

Pretty much i got it for the pce since it was cheaper to get instead.

I still have my copy for it still even though i have Taito Legends 2 now, and i can play it like was in the arcades. I do perfer to keep (Liquid Kids) on my PCE for my collection any ways
