THis thread is for movie reviewing. Here you dudes can tell of good and bad experiences. I guess I'll start.

So I bought the Doom movie at walmart last night for $7.50. THis movie sux; don't buy it. It has nothing to do with any of the games in the series, especially doom3; which is supposed to be based on. Ya, I want my $7.50 back, lol. Anyways they twisted around the story so bad that it just seems like some lame movie. Oh well.  :x

I saw Doom in the theatre and I think I am one of the 2 people in the world that actually liked it. It's tough making a movie out of a video game because there are all sorts of expectations of what it should be like, and everyone's got their own ideas.

I didn't regret paying the 8 bucks or whatever to see it on the bigscreen, and it entertained me for the hour and a half I was there. I'll probably buy the DVD some day. Yeah, it's no Oscar winner, but it's "fun."

House Guest (1995, starring Sinbad and Phil Hartman) - A cheesy mid-90's comedy flick where the vibrant and goofy Sinbad pretends to be someone else in order to stay with Phil Hartman's rich, yet psychologically disfunctional, family to avoid getting killed by the mafia because of a money scandle. Lots of funny ghetto moments and a bizarre fascination with cheese burgers.

I have the DOOM movie and I could give a rat's ass whether or not it follows any of the existing DOOM storylines. The movie is bloody and violent, with lots of neat weapons and a really cute female co-lead. What's not to like? :D

I like the Evil Dead series. Even the first two movies have a kind of cheesy humor about them, but Army of Darkness is just over the top. I mean, they went way too far. It's like a self-parody. I still like the movie to a certain extent, but I enjoy the first two to a much greater degree.

The Day After Tomorrow

It is an awful movie! I was hoping everyone would die quickly so the movie would just end. But nooooooo.....

First off am I the only one who has a hard time telling the difference between Toby McGuire and Jake Gyllenhaal?  They both suck.

Spoilers:
First of all, the CGI in this movie was unwiped-ass quality. They definitely farmed a lot of the effects work out to the lowest bidder. The people who did the tornadoes (probably an effects house in India) have obviously never seen a tornado before. The fact is that The Wizard of Oz has a more realistic looking tornado BY FAR, and that movie is older than the projection equipment generally used at film festivals (ie: older than the planet Earth). The tornadoes here seem fatter at the bottom, have little or no debris clouds, and move exceedingly slow. My guess is that German director Ronald Emmerich told the people in India "We need you to make computer tornadoes for us! Tornadoes are basically funnels of wind or something. Achtung!"

Then there are the wolves who just happen to be wandering around a frozen New York City. How they survived the massive tidal wave that went through the city is beyond me.  Obviously they enter a huge Russian tanker which has somehow floated down the narrow streets of NYC to chase Spider Man and his amazing super-friends. What the group doesn't realize is that these wolves can't actually hurt them because they are incredibly fake-looking CGI. Maybe they are running away because they hate bad graphics? That must be it. Why don't the wolves freeze? They've obviously been outside for a very long time. Also where did the huge tanker go at the end of the movie? It's not by the library. It's just gone!  And as you look at the wide shot above the library at the end, you see that there was no way the tanker could have ever have gotten there in the first place.  That makes me gaseous.

Then there are the sappy side stories which amount to nothing at all. I don't care if Toby McGuire/Jake Gyllenhaal has feelings for the smart chick. She's actually not very smart at all.  She knows enough to heat Toby/Jake/Spider-Man up when he comes out of the water, but she's too much of a dip shit to do anything about a giant gash on her leg.  She is a stupid whore and she deserves to die.  And while I think the 30-something asian lady in the movie is indeed desirable material, the way the young guy looked back at her as he was leaving and the way she looked at him almost made me puke up pizza bits. And what is up with the homeless guy's dog? SHUT UP ALREADY! Ronald Emmerich loves having barking dogs in his movies, and they never die like they should. The scene in Independence Day where the dog narrowly escaped the explosion made me go diarrhea on my seat. Also, am I supposed to feel sad when the old guy cuts his own rope and falls down to save the other two assholes? My reaction was "Good riddance! You should have died 10 years ago you old fart!"  I would have killed myself too if I were in this crappy movie. Oh! And the 3 idiots in England drinking 12 year old scotch worrying about the loo was just retarded. Am I supposed to care about them? Their contribution to the story is about as essential as picking the lint out of my belly-button before I shoot myself for having to watch this P.O.S. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!!! There are so many side stories in this movie that you may think that some of them are commercials in a TV show. Spider Man's mom is caring for this dippy kid in a hospital bed. We are supposed to be worried and/or concerned for the kid who needs transport to some place. For some reason he can only be moved with an ambulance even though the only thing hooked up to the little bastard is an oxygen tank which could be carried by hand. Sela Ward should be frozen and thawed out when they find a cure for lousy acting.
End Spoilers

Sucks.

Turbo D

They Live.  A pretty good late 80s B sci-fi movie starring Rowdy Roddy Piper.  That alone will raise some interest with some folks.

Anywayy, it came recommended to me by my dad of all people.  It's basically about roddy stumbling across a pair of shades that allows him to all these subliminal messages everywhere (such as consume, buy, marry and reproduce, do not question authority, etc), not to mention alien creatures that are all over earth.

After seeing it, I can see why my dad recommended it -- he's a socialist at heart (him and I have our differences in thought :-s), and this movie basically criticizes capitalism, after all.

But even without the political messages that the director John Carpenter intended, it's good as a B sci-fi movie gets.  As a lot of you grew up in the 80s, I recommend it.  =D>

I watch a lot of movies but, like my taste in music, I'm sure few will enjoy what I do. Still I'll list some that I've seen recently that I enjoyed for one reason or another.

Angel-A - I like most Luc Besson films (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, etc.) so I figured I'd like this too. I did.

Paprika - nightmare of my dreams. great visuals

Inland Empire - David Lynch. Enter at your own risk.

Tekkonkinkreet - cool.

Ok, not exactly reviews, but I liked 'em.

i love it and watch it periodicaly (as most of the greater carpenters > the fog, princes of darkness, the thing, snake plisken...). when i watched the movie the first time, i was kind of dissapointed that not russel could took over the main role. but that's now about 18 years ago, and in the meantime roddy became the best fitting actor for this specific movie just possible.

Great call! Bullitt was a great mystery. I was totally fooled the first time through!! Also, did you catch the part when the Congressman wanted the black doctor replaced because he was "too young and inexperienced"??

When I first saw it I thought that character was being a total racist, but the second time I saw it, it seemed like the Congressman was more concerned that the doctor was colluding with McQueen's character.

What are your thoughts, if you remember the part I'm talking about?

Robocop: Who is he, what is he, where does he come from?

What many people see as a special-effects showcase with little substance, to me, is one of the most politically explosive movies I've ever seen.

Robocop takes a major shot at the capitalist system and western society in general, by showing how big business and private enterprise do not ensure a healthy or safe society.

Totally my favorite movie as a kid. When I first rented it, I watched it over and over until it was time to return it. It's still up there as a favorite.

The Thomas Crown Affair (Steve McQueen original version): Very unique among McQueen's movies.. this is one of the few films where the "king of cool" really loses control of his emotions and laughs out loud!

This movie was really quite deep in a spiritual sense, and it was another politically subversive movie as well. McQueen's character was very wealthy are a result of his currency arbitrage activities.... but was spiritually unfulfilled. He organizes a bank robbery and ends up getting mixed up in a love affair with the female insurance investigator who is on his case!

I never thought there would be a movie I would enjoy as much as I enjoyed Robocop but this one is it. I've seen the remake as well but being a McQueen fan I have to go with the original!!! (Also, the ending was very different)

NecroPhile

The last three movies I sat through:

300 - shit with annoying narration, junk CGI, and half of it's in slow-mo
Transformers - shit with decent CGI
American Pie Naked Mile - shit, but funny shit with boobies

Paprika is on my Christmas wish list.    Been dying to see it.

Inland Empire I saw at the NY Film Festival- Lynch was there and answered questions.  When I first saw him I turned my head and he was in this little balcony spot looking exactly like the lady with the weird hair in the Club Silencio balcony in Mullholland Dr.  Anyway Lynch is my favorite director- I'm not an apologist- some of his stuff is trash but I feel that there's a handful of complete masterpieces there.

I saw Teekonkinkreet over the weekend and fucking loved it.

Are these reviews only about DVDs?  Last couple of movies I saw in the theatres was No Country for Old Men (similar in ways to Fargo- only much better and more hopeless) and The Mist.  The Mist was enjoyable- but I couldn't help feeling that if it was on the Sci-fi network I would have thought it was incredible.  Then again- I probably would have said "wow!  this is good enough to be in theatres!"  I would have been wrong.  CGI is pretty bad.  The first creature looks the worst - the cgi in Dreamcatcher was better.  Not a big Thomas Jane fan either.  There are however- some shout-outs (I counted five) to The Dark Tower series.  Recommended only for King geeks.

Yeah my feeling through all of Bullit was definitely that the Congressman was up to no good, but that's only because the actor that played him ALWAYS plays the corrupt asshole politician type character, hah.  I really liked how they left the mystery partially unsolved at the end to keep the realism, it was great to see it end up like I assume most real detective work does.

You guys really liked Tekkonkonkrit or whatever its called?  Man that was the worst animation I've seen in ages.  Fucking awful character design, a story that made no sense whatsoever and never went anywhere, and everybody's motives were flimsy at best.  The writing was horrible, the story was lame and boring (not to mention leaving TONS of unexplained occurrences), and if it wasn't for the really good CG backgrounds I'd say it had the worst animation since those old Hannah Barbera cartoons.

Should be interesting to hear what you guys think of Paprika after you've seen it. I have a feeling it's gonna be a real love it or hate it type of thing. I thought that the character designs in Tekkonkinkreet were at least interesting in that they were different than similar movies. I will agree that at first I thought the animation was a little weak though by the end of the movie I didn't care.

On a totally different note, watched Superbad the other day. Thought it was pretty funny.

nat

Superbad is one of the funniest movies released in a long, long time. To be completely honest I thought it was going to be one of those stupid high school movies that relied on tits and ass and lame attempts at humor that, more often than not, failed.

What I found instead is a movie that actually has a hint of intelligence and some of the funniest character moments ever to grace movies as we know them. The humor was spot-on and hit the ball out of the park nearly 100% of the time which is more than you can say for it's contemporaries. I've seen it twice now and I bought the DVD the day it was released.

Superbad is like a Jenga tower. If you remove just one piece, the whole thing could fall apart.

Superbad was awesome.  I also loved Hot Rod- the fight dance scene was the closest I've ever come to literally pissing myself laughing, I thought I was going to fucking die.  I think I'm wired to find fight dancing incredibly awesome, I just finished watching Flight of the Conchords and the episode where Bret fight dances out his anger had me in tears.

Paprika is out on both Blu Ray and regular DVD here in the USA but I watched it subtitled so couldn't tell you about the dub. The special features are pretty interesting on the dvd too. I did find this list of features for the Blu Ray disc on the animeondvd website -

    * Chinese (Cantonese) 5.1 Language
    * Chinese (Mandarin -Taiwan) 5.1 Language
    * French (Parisian) 5.1 Language

Just saw the 1973 Fantastic Planet for the first time last night.  I highly recommend it - as long as you go in knowing that the ending is ludicrously abrupt and cheap.  The animation is great- looks like Dali meets Gilliam meets the old Star Trek cartoons.  It was funny- while watching it my girlfriend screamed out- "that guy has a penis slung over his shoulder!", replaying the scene- in which a bunch of humans (or Ohms) are standing around debating- sure enough one of the guys standing there had what appeared to be a big penis slung over his shoulder.  Highly unusual to say the least.

OK, Final Fantasy Advent Children for the most part was a good movie, but the ending...

=SPOILERS=

OK, so they're in a church, Cloud wakes up in a lake inside the church (being born again) and then he baptizes a little kid while Barret says "PRAISE THE LORD!". After this, Cloud notes that he will no longer be alone.

I mean, come on, you should have had Aeris nailed to a fucking cross, for a movie that caters to the Buddhist idea of a "life-stream" for 95% of the flick, it's weird to see all these Christian overtones come out of the woodwork from nowhere.

Spirits Within was almost as bad with the Scientology shit, but it wasn't as obvious, only in hindsight do you realize what they were trying to say.

So what we have is two great movies marred by religious agendas. It doesn't have to be that way, you don't have to preach anything to make a good movie, hell Crank was a FUCKING FANTASTIC movie and all it preached was "LOOK THERE'S THIS GUY WHO WILL DIE IF HE DOESN'T STOP DOING CRAZY SHIT, SO LET'S MAKE HIM DO CRAZY SHIT!".

Theoretically, I could edit Advent Children to start from the scene when the three androgynous Sephrioth clones enter the city and end when he kills Sephrioth, and I'd have the best CGI movie ever made, and it would fit on a CD-R to boot. I think I might do that.

Just got done watching Rush Hour 3.

It was deliciously cheesy. At first, the cheesiness bothered me, but when I got used to it, I had a lot of fun. It's a fun movie.

When it was all over, I had a smile on my face, so for anyone who liked the first two and who likes cheesy movies and cheesy humor I would have to recommend it.

My favorite thing about the series is the Chinese/black dynamic... it's something that really should be explored more often, with other types of characters from each side.

I hear ya. I'm not generally into those kind of movies, but I'm a sucker for the Rush Hour series. I'm definitely going to check that one out.

I just watched AVP:R the other night. I had low expectations going in so I wasn't too disappointed. Some of the action/fight scenes were pretty cool, but the human characters just got in the way of the fight scenes. It would have been OK if the human character scenes actually helped to move the plot, but that wasn't the case.
