Hey all! Who here among us is a mecha anime fan? If you are one, which mechas should people watch and how completely badass are they?

I'm saying this now: To any mecha fan who has not watched Zeta Gundam yet, your ass is getting a visit from my foot.

nectarsis

Oh you know it baby

I would like to add

Gurren-Lagann
Heavy Metal L.Gaim
Zone of the Enders
Eureka 7
Tekkaman Blade (Teknoman or something like that in the US)
Macross

and of course Code Geass

to Nec's list.

Rainbow_Bright

Does Patlabor count? I watched that years ago, I thought it was really boring.

How could I forget Geass. Tekkaman Blade has been redone as a sub only set (well 3 small box sets) that areVASTLY superior to the bastardized Teknoman.

A few more missed :oops::

Macross
Genesis Climber Mospeda
Southern Cross
Robotech
Orguss
Megazone 23
Armored Trooper Votoms (all)
Escaflowne
Full Metal Panic

I like some giant robot shows, but not most of 'em. pretty much everything Gundam is meh-tastic. (except 0080, that was interesting.)

My favorite giant robot shows:

The Big O
Voltron (I'm gonna pick up the Golion box set when I get the chance)
Evangelion (well, the beginning - the end gets really fucking weird.)

...that's pretty much it.

Edit: I forgot Robotech! it's been a long time since I've seen that...

I agree with most of this post. But Gundam wasn't meh-tastic man.....and you managed to pick the UC Gundam Side Story I like the least......:D. On a serious note if you like lots of death in your mecha give Victory Gundam a try.

Yup simular taste to yours as well.
Though i can think of another one that i didn't list.
The Super Dimension Century Orguss
It's a shame it had a limted release run for the u.s on dvd by imagin asian.

I've watch the whole thing on a bootleg set with fansubs and it's not bad,for a show made in the 80's.

Interesting that the show was done by the same studio that did macross.

I'm a huge fan of giant robots. Check the user name, after all.

I'm not sure what the last robot show was that I actually liked though. It wasn't recently. Big O? Maybe. Jeez, that things almost a decade old.

My favorites:

Macross (TV, DYRL, Seven, and Plus)
Gundam (original, Z, ZZ, CCA, 0080, 0083, 08th MS)
Mospeda
Giant Robo: The Animation (I can't say enough about how fucking great this show is)
Gunbuster (see Giant Robo)
Transformers (original, Movie, 2010, Masterforce)

I do the models too:

I do love big-ass robots, but I'm totally old school.

Growing up going back & forth between Korea & the U.S., I became fans of bunch of mechs that were popular in that era, some in the West, some in the East, some on both sides of the pond --

Atom/Astroboy
Mazinger/Tranzor Z
Grandizer
Mechander Robo
Transformers
Voltron
Gobots, etc...

But above all, for us kids in Korea, we had the Robot Taekwon V (or more precisely for my generation, it was the sequel, Super Taekwon V) Yeah! =D>
IMG

As for Gundams, I loved the designs of the mechs as a kid, but I never saw a single episode of it at that time (saw it only through books & magazines). I guess the story was for a bit more "mature" audience, so it never made it past the Korean censors in the 80s. I tried getting in to it as an adult, but to be honest, story didn't pick up fast enough. I just don't have time to be watching 500,000 episodes just for the sake of watching it.

The only one that really impressed me after becoming an adult was Giant Robo. This one had the opposite effect of Gundam. The design of the Robot wasn't particularly slick looking, but the presentation was just rad. It's been awhile since I've seen it though... 10 years or so?

I love patlabor!! but only the TV series and manga the two movies were just soooo long and slow..

I don't understand the fascination with Gundam I've always thought it slow and too political.. Macross now thats a mecha show!!! Also check out Detonator Organ but its quite an old show.. and Giant Robo and who can forget Gainax's Gunbuster! & Neon Genesis Evangelion :O

Tatsujin

as a kid, i liked Thierry Grandizer V-Z 109 the most!

The success of that show is the reason there hasn't been a good anime show in a decade. The first ever Gainax thing I didn't love.

Yeah, I didn't quite think he fit in the catergory as I typed that in, but meh. (I do recall parts of the show where the whole story revolved around how human he could be, rather than a robot).
