I'm trying to figure out what battery to get.  I want a li-ion, probably a rechargable camera one, but I'm thinking that if the screen is 12v, I need a 12v battery, I have no idea about the ampage.  Can the PC Engine handle a 12v input ok in this way?

Doesn't the PCE run off a 9VDC input to a regulator that drops that to 5V? 12V is probably a bit much for healthy operation. It might work but I think it would produce more heat, but that might be ok. And if you have the screen running off that 12V source AND the PC-Engine the actual Voltage to the regulator in the PCE might be less and more favorable.

Bacteria is running a PAL Turbografx and a 5" screen off I think 2 packs of lion batteries, same kind I used on my Turbo Express (but he is using 2 of them I think wired together). The way he wired them it is supplying almost 9 volts.

The JAMMA TG16 (really a PC engine) setup seemed to send 12V from the JAMMA edge to the power jack of the PC engine.  The 7805 regulator is good for up to 16v I think, so 12v should be fine it'll just make more heat than usual.  The heat sink on it in the PC engine is pretty healthy though.

I am sure that screen has a 7808 or 7805 inside, so you don't need to give it the full 12.

But if you are looking at 5" screens why not the PS1 screen? You could even give it RGB so the picture would look amazing.

Huh, I thought I replied to this.

The PSOne screen is high quality, but I hate the bezel, and I'm not good enough to remove it.
I bought the screen, so it's on it's way now, but I doubt I can afford the battery this month now.

So you actually know the regulator on that screen and how much voltage it needs?  I can test it with ... I think I have a 6v battery at home, so I can see if that powers it.  Man this is exciting!!!

Yeah now that I think about it I think I have powered it with 7v
