Just picked this game up. I do remember this one in the arcades but was never a arcade hound so never played it much. I have never played a home console version until yesterday when I tried the PC Engine/Turbo Version. Couple Questions for those who have played it:

1.) The controls are super funky even though I have an Ave 3 Pad. I know it will get easier with practice but is it still awkward even when you get the hang of it? My satelight gets out of position and I have a tough time getting it back in front of me then take a bunch of hits trying to get it in line.

2.) When you get the controls down is it a very difficult game to clear? I quickly got to stage 5 but seems like this may be one tough game unless it's just seeming that way for now. Stage 5 Boss (centipede thing) destroyed me.

I had high hopes but after a couple hours play I think it's OK but hoping it gets better.

I never have gotten used to the controls.  :|

The controls def take some time, but I adjusted.  Games not overly difficult, I beat it on my second try.  Having played the arcade version this last weekend (beat it with Jef_ made me appreciate what a solid port the Turbo version really is.

Only played the Sega Master and Genesis version.

I'm curious if there is a screen comparison of the PCE version of Forgotten Worlds and the Genesis version?
EDIT:
NVM found it on the pc engine bible:

Yes, "where are the scrolls?!?"

You'll get the hang of it.  You're good at shooters.  I loved it on the Genesis, but after buying my Duo at launch and getting Forgotten Worlds it was like night and day.  Yeah there's no parallax, but the game has all the levels the arcade version does.  Plus, the sprites and color are way more accurate.  One down side though is the missing two player mode :(  To this day I still only have regular duo controllers.  So my ass is still using the start button as another rotation.  Haha after 20 years I'm just used to it.

PCEngineHell

If its a big deal you can build a dedicated arcade stick for the game using a straight across 3 button pattern for the button layout, keeping the rotating buttons on either side of the fire button. It will help with your response time on the rotation of the orb and your aiming. Its a awesome port, though the last boss can be a real motherfucker depending on how well you have powered up during the game since you have to battle him alone.

Here you go. Has all the ports of this game.
The Genesis version has some nice multilayer scrolling. However I like the overall picture/colors and music of the Turbo much more.

Wow. The SMS version looks surprisingly good. The Genesis version deserves some credit for coming out 2.5 years before the PCE port, using new technology, and being only a 3 or 4 Meg cart. I still prefer the TG version though.

I still don't have this game on Duo, but I played it on pc emulator and it's a hard game.
I remember playing the arcade long time ago too
Has the Duo version an optios screen? Hard mode/level/music...?

Yes, it does have an Options menu. All that I remember about it is that the sound test includes the Japanese voices.

Played it a few more times, game's not so good IMO, although it does have some real nice tunes and decent graphics.

If you could just easily reset the satilight in front of you when it gets out of place it wouldn't be so bad and actually would be really fun. Also, being a arcade game there are some spots that you'll be taking a few hits no matter how well you memorize a pattern, which bugs me about many arcade shooters.

Anyway, made it to the level 7 Boss, plan to chip away until I clear it and the music is probably the only reason why it will be bearable to keep playing.

bartre

aww, i like FW.
that said, never played the PCE version, though i've beaten the Genny version a couple times.

lol the genny version.

I figured out how to work the satilight to get it back where I want it. It sure would have been nice if the manual explained it!!

Basically use button 3 (run) to spin all around, when the satilight is in the area you want use button 1 to straighten it out. You need a second or two so you can't do it in crowded areas. Made it much easier, made it to level 8 Boss but need to learn his pattern before I can beat him.

Not that anyone really cares but I like to talk about shooters I'm playing.

geise

Talking about shooters you're playing on a pc-engine/turbo forum is the right thing to do. :D

Thanks.

Here are my final comments on the game. Overall once you learn how to control the satelight and know what weapons to use where the game is pretty fun, not great, but better than average.

I have two main beefs:

1.) The Controls - They are not properly explained in the manual! Using 2+3 rotates the satilight in full circles around you, Using 1+2 keeps the satilight in place, it just rotates the shot in a 360 degree angle. Using the combination of these two is how to properly control your shots. This not being listed in the manual added some undo frustration in early plays.

2.) The Final Boss - Way too unbalanced, the only way I have figured out to beat him is this: You need to find all the large bonus Zenny during the stages to have enough money to buy at least 2 potions plus fully loaded weapons. You also have to get there without losing a life the whole game. Basicaly you need a near perfect run to the final boss so you have 5 lives and full power weapons. Then he will desroy you with those lasers you have to get lucky enough to avoid enough of them before you lose all 5 lives. If anyone has a better stategy I would be super interested in what it could be.
