busted hucard or pce??

I've been looking around the repair forum for answers and could use some help on this one

Recently I purchased Hana Taka Daka and once it arrived, put it in my white pce cdrom2 setup and it worked fine.  I shut it off and came back to it a few hours later, but it wasn't working the same.  I noticed that if I watched the demo, the screen froze and it would not respond to a soft-reset.  I manually restarted the console, and now the game freezes right as the first level is starting.

My first reaction was to clean the game's contacts with 91% isopropyl alcohol.  Didn't change anything.

Then I pulled out my US Duo w/ Kisado converter...and the game works fine! weird...

The PCE was region modded with a switch a few years back, and I wonder if that has something to do with it.  I found this old post, which indicates that pce mods might cause some games to crash:

could this be the problem?

I've had trouble using a Neo Flash on this system in the past as well.   I also noticed recently that my jpn 3.0 card crashes before a game can load too.  I didn't really pay attention to that b/c my arcade card pro works.  I have about 50+ hus, and have tried quite a few tonight, which all seem to be working fine.

Also... since I had my kisado out, i switched the PCE to USA mode, stuck Hana Taka Daka in the kisado...but the game won't load at all, just a blank screen.  All of my other jhus will work using this method.

any input is greatly appreciated.  please don't tell me the hu is dead

I had this exact same issue on my duo-r. It was region modded by doujidance and bought on ebay. I sent the unit to thesteve and he discovered issues with doujidances work. He was able to repair the system and no works no problem. I hope this helps at all.

Trust me, the Hu is not dead.  I played it quite a bit.  Just the fact that you are able to play it on your Turbo with a converter proves the game is ok.  But, if you aren't happy with it, I will gladly refund you and you can send it back.    Its quite a fun little game.

out of curiosity, which game(s) were you having trouble with?  my mod was done by someone else, but i'd hate to call them out on the forum because I have faith that they normally do great work.  this must just be a fluke.

and Bernie, it's all good man.  I have no reason to believe you would knowingly sell me a bad hucard.  You have a good rep on these boards and I appreciate the great deal you gave me.  The more research I do, the more I believe that my issue is with the mod job on the pce.  I appreciate the return offer, but I want to keep the game.  If anything, it gives me a good excuse to fire up my duo.  And I'm already addicted to this game anyway, it's awesome! 

i'll have to find someone to fix my pce and replace the cd laser too, as that is starting to go.  maybe it's a sign i'm playing too much... haha

it was very strange. only a hand full of hucards would work at all, most would not. most cd games would run, but would look terrible. it was unexplainable is the only thing i can think of saying. After thesteve found the mod messup it works great now.

I had a bad mod job on a PC Engine Core system... It played Japanese games fine but US hu cards played music out of key.

I used to own a standard white pc engine with no mods at all that would show weird colors in the backgrounds for the game Burning Angels only. Every other game played just fine.

!!!??? It's because that game was too HOT for PCE.

its a power problem with the region mod from what i read low 5v i am shore thesteve posted this in another post.
