10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Yeah, believe it or not, it's still running. It's loud as hell, but it works. I'll snag a picture of it when I get back home tomorrow.

For now, consider this advertised irony for this topic about "always-on DRM:"

I still have my launch Xbox360, which has survived 7+ years of abuse, annual Madden tournaments at work, 4 moves and has been on display and played at two Midwest Gaming Classics. Damn thing still runs like gangbusters; it just won't die.

I know a guy that has a Japanese launch PS2 that still works, which is pretty incredible. When I worked at EB during the PS2 era, the last wave of the PS2 Phat specifically, I saw assloads of broken PS2s, several that actually shipped defective.

Well Mr. (or Dr.) Professorson, here you go:

In the bottom left corner is a launch XBOX which has survived through numerous RROD's (the three ring kind, and it will occasionally scare me by doing it again whenever the power goes out.) as well as some idiotic yet official Microsoft tinfoil rigging. Ahem...

And yet the bastards flat out denied they did it, even with solid evidence... scary that they want to us to buy into a console that will require a connection to some servers in their offices...

A console that has been repaired multiple times isn't the same as one that has been going since launch without any RRoDs.

My original PCE/CDROM2 combo has never been repaired once. It's a survivor. My original black Duo has probably been recapped by now meaning that it isn't as reliable.

if you buy any M$ consoles, you have only yourself to blame.

Guess I'm not too surprised. With that kind of backlash even a hard-headed company like Microsoft would have to listen.
Still, a relief, even though I don't plan on buying this console... at least not at launch.

It isn't a matter of them "listening". It was never going to happen in the first place.

I have absolutely no interest in Microsofts new console. What, pay a premium just so you console will fail 54% of the time? No thank you, I rather spend the money on a high powered gaming pc.

I am glad to see Microsoft wise up and listen to all the backlash. Whether or not they intended to do it at least companies have seen the public response if such plans are ever thought of being implemented.

I am kinda thinking in along these lines too. A high end gaming PC could be a less stressful route. I doubt I would leave consoles behind completely though.

Exactly. It was never confirmed. Just speculation based on "unnamed sources". But we know how people love to run around telling us the sky is falling...

SmaMan

Actually a good friend of mine who works at Microsoft seemed pretty convinced it was going to happen... nothing confirm worthy, mind you, but the possibility was out there, and that's what got gamers all up in arms.

That Adam Orth thing didn't help things either.

EDIT: Actually, it was pretty damn well confirmed. The Durango SDK spelled that out in black and white.
