12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

Anyone know the difference between Ys4 version 4 and Ys4 version 5?

Are those the 2 different versions in japan? Meaning version 5 would be the expert version?

Thanks!

I'm not sure I follow. There were two versions of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys on the PC Engine and Mask of the Sun for the Super Famicom. From what I've read, Mask of the Sun was considered canonical, while Dawn of Ys was a very different game.

Ys V was only released for the Super Famicom, and had a standard version and an expert version. The expert version was the same game, but with harder difficulty.

Actually, there were 4 versions of Ys 4 released so far.  Dawn of Ys for TGCD & Mask of the Sun for SFC as mentioned.  But also there was Mask of the Sun: A New Theory for PS2, & Memories of Celceta for Vita.  There also was a Sega CD games in the works IIRC, but never released.  Either way, they're all totally different games, but with the same characters, music, & basic scenario.

So what's the theory behind the PS2 version? Is it revisionist history?

EmperorIng

Falcom tried remaking their earlier Ys games on PS2, presumably to make them better and fix graphical archaicisms. They also remade Ys 3 on the PS2, but as far as I can tell, people don't talk about the PS2 Ys remakes because of them being generally low quality (not so the case with the PSP/PC remakes of 3 and 4).

I can't speak for the PS2 version of Ys III, but Arc System Works actually did the port for Ys IV, I haven't played it in a very long time, but I do not remember them changing too much for the PS2 version (take that with a grain of salt). I'm not entirely sure what documents they were given by Falcom, but Falcom was never exactly happy with Ys IV before the release of Memories of Celceta.

The reason for the two different versions for PCE/TG16 and SFC/SNES was because Falcom passed the project onto two different teams (Hudson for PCE, Tonkin House for SFC). For a while  Mask of the Sun (SFC) was considered the canon because it stuck closer the technical documentations given by Falcom. Hudson took some liberties to try and make the setting and plot more marketable (there is a trailer for the pitch for an anime based on this version out there), but in these changes strayed away from the original documentation given by Falcom. With that said it always made me sad that SFC was canon over the PCE game because I had so much more fun with the PCE version.

Ys V for SFC has two versions Ys V and Ys V Expert. Expert was released a few months after the initial release after comments about how easy the first release was. There is also a PS2 remake of this, and was a bit more substantial than the Ys III or Ys IV remakes.

IIRC there are actually two versions of Ys 4 on the PCE CD. Probably a bug a fix.. dunno.

SignOfZeta

I'm pretty sure that's correct, it's just a bug fix. Only identifiable by comparing the ISO. There's really only one Ys IV for PCE.

It's unfortunate there's no translation of Ys V Expert.

Ys V vanilla is way too easy. You can stock healing items and earn cash from gems like no tomorrow.

Even though I'm not thrilled by Ys V, I keep meaning to finally play thru it in english one of these days, possibly before Falcom goes & remakes it!

For a good time, reach out to this wily KKKFarm-crankcaller at (780) 717-9274 or Ryleystuartreynolds@gmail.com up in Alberta, Canada!
His last crank-voicemail: "Gimme a call back when you can. This is Ryley by the way... *giggles*"
He then followed it up with 8 WEEKS of ~DAILY calling! BAN ON SIGHT!!!

I think it's worth playing.  I know it has a bad reputation online, but I feel like that's just a few people's opinion being restated by others.  I had a lot of fun with the game, it's not the best in the series but still worth playing.  I'll say this it's metric tons better than Ark of Napishtim (least the PS2 version I played).

I found Ys 6 on PS2 to be tons of fun, so I take your statement about Ys 5 with a dubious squint.

ParanoiaDragon

Yeah, I absolutely loved Ys 6 on PS2 as well.  I didn't care too much for the 3d models, prefer the original & PSP in that regard.  But that game is great.  Not Oath in Felghana or Origin great, but still great.  Even still, I'm sure I'll enjoy Ys 5 to some degree or another.  I wonder if the music was more rock, less classical, if that would've helped peoples opinions of it?

I've played through Ys 5 twice before and after it was translated.  I've never played the PS2 version, only the one on the SNES.  I find the game to be a Huge disappointment.  What the Ys series has always done right imo is fast paced frantic combat.  The Ys series has almost always outpaced the gameplay from other action RPGs and this holds doubly true when you consider the time period when the game came out.

Ys 5 is a colossal slog through some of the slowest paced combat I've ever seen in any game.  If memory serves, there's a maximum of 3 enemies on screen at a time and when this happens the SNES slows to a crawl.  If you were so inclined to waste time with the absolutely unnecessary magic mechanics in the game you'll find that casting magic spells pauses the action and takes several seconds for it to finish.  Instead you're better off just walking slowly up to enemies (that barely move I must add) and swing your slooooow sword to kill them.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

Did you guys play it when it first came out or more recently/both?  I admit I didn't play through it when it was new.  My experience and feelings come from playing through at the end of last year.  Personally I found myself REALLY frustrated with the platforming, and other game mechanics.  I don't know the game just did not mesh/click with me.

ParanoiaDragon

It was Ys, so I bought it on day one. :D  I'm sure I pre-ordered it from Electronics Boutique or whatever.  I do have the PC version as well(& the PSP) but I don't think I picked that up till later for really cheap on ebay.
