10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I'm looking for some info on controller variations. Specifically, the difference between TurboPads marked NEC Technologies Inc. HES-PAD-01 and those with just the NEC Home Electronics (U.S.A.), Inc. on the back.

I had initially suspected that as a Canadian, I had a mix of hardware from two countries. Since the Canadian power supplies (molded/printed info with CSA certification) are different than the American ones (black/silver label) I thought I'd try that approach first.

Thanks!

Yes, someone posted about this in the last year or two...but how to find it?

If only the search function was decent...

I'd try HES-PAD-01 and see what happens...

Thanks! I tried several searches before I posted. Fortunately your idea of using the part number yielded great results. Seems there was a discussion posted just today in fact. An undoubtedly handsome Canadian asked this very question and the part number was mentioned in the one and only reply to his thread!

Sadly it didn't help me with my question. Last night I searched through the first 30 pages of forum topics. I guess I'll take a crack at another thirty and cross my fingers.

The Turbo Pad that came with the system is different than the one that was packages separately. The differences are the info on the back is different, the "TurboPad" logo is slightly different, the circuit boards are different, the Select/Run buttons are different internally and you cannot swap the board from one to another without modifying the case.

Thanks for the info. I had almost given up after searching through 60 pages of threads! I assume then that the HES-PAD-01 is the one included with the system?

Thank you for the link. That was an interesting read. I appreciated the pictures. It saves me from cracking my controllers open for my own curiosity. These things are hard enough to find as it is.

If only Google was allowed to search the forum, the answer might have been found more quickly than the built in forum search.

Yeah, at some point Aaron changed robots.txt because the forum was having lots of problems and/or eating up a lot of bandwidth.

It was the best solution given the $$$ and time/energy available.
