I started playing Dungeon Explorer and found it to be pretty awesome. I know it's a favorite around here but was hoping to get some advice. I die...alot. Any tips? Also, is it worth it to play both?

I mean... if you like it, finish it and then play the second one :P

It's a great game.

Don't worry if you die...you probably haven't had a chance to improve the stats of your player too much...with every boss you beat, you will be able to make yourself stronger/faster/etc.

This game is like Gauntlet in that (1) sometimes you want to clear out an area, as long as you don't lose much life, (2) but other times, there is no shame in just running past an enemy and diving for the exit.

I always want to kill everything, compulsively, but that isn't always the best strategy unless you have enough offensive power/in a party with others.

WHITE POTIONS.

Drastic Measure: You could consider changing your character if you really are frustrated. I have beaten the game with every character, but it's the very *beginning* where their differences are most drastic...when you level up, you can decide if you want to "fill deficits" or "accentuate your strengths"...but, considering how many nooks and crannies are in tight corridors, "superspeed" might not be as useful as increased offensive attack or strength :)

Although, being able to run laps around a boss is fun.

Remember your mantra:
EAT. PLAY. DIE. PLAY. DIE. PLAY. LOVE TG-16.

Both are great games.

The second one is bigger and has more to explore. Also, more hidden characters than the first game and even better colors.

Experiment with the different characters and see what one or ones you like the best. Then upgrade them to your play style.

Make sure to test the black and white potions on each character as they do different things.

Dicer

Both are fantastic in their own right, that said I gotta give the nod to part deux.

That intro, the presentation Cd sound and just more of everything that made the first so great.

Can't go wrong with either though .

Psycho Punch

Dexplorer 2 is awesome and has a larger map but the first one has a charm on its own... plus II is crazy expensive unless you CDR it or play it Tobias style so that kinda counts against the CD sequel.

I personally prefer Dungeon Explorer 2 but that's just because I don't have the first one...

Still pretty cheap for a very playable Japanese retail disc.

Anyway, both games are great. Definitely play both OP.

No reason not to play both. The graphics are dark and lack detail but the music is incredible

I've only played the inferior dungeon explorer 2 port on the snes rather than the original, but it's a good game

All these elitist bastards talking about DE2!

DE Huey is a great game that is every bit as fun and satisfying as its successor!

DE has some of the best PSG tunes...and the gameplay/mechanics in the two games are identical.

So, finish the Huey first.

It's awesome!

Plus, you need to defeat Natas in the Huey before you earned the privilege of playing the sequel.

NO SPOILERS, people.

:)

Holy Cannoli!

You owe it to yourself to play DEII CD :)

No, the irony of this comment following the previous one is not lost on me.

You know, sadly, I still haven't sat down to beat Dungeon Explorer II, and Bernie gave me a Tobias repro too... What is wrong with me... *sniff* :(

When/if I do, I'm gonna start with the Huey again, since that was rented and beaten when I was a kid, so I don't remember much.

The correct answer is nowhere on this poll, and that is: Both games - back to back

NecroPhile

Agreed.  Ya gotta play both!

As for tips, try to find a player that fits your play style.  I prefer to take it slow and kill everything, using heal magic as needed.

I like the original better than the sequel. In the original, even when your stats are low you still control really well, whether you move quickly or slowly on-screen. In the sequel, if your agility is low you feel very sluggish and unresponsive, not just slower on-screen movement. I found it very hard to get into the game because of this. It takes a while for the character control to get up to the level immediately available in the original HuCard title. That alone made the original a much better play experience for me.

ParanoiaDragon

You can change the crystals you picked up in DE2 however, so you can up your agility stats.  I played thru the game with most characters, adjusting where need be.  I don't recall being able to do that in the first game, but, then again, I only beat it via DEBDE DEBDA.......

spenoza

In DE1 the crystals change color, and the color it is when you grab it affects which stat gets boosted. But I also know which enemies to farm for key stat boosts.

crazydean

Thanks for all the responses, guys. It looks like I need to give these games some attention when finals are over. I'll start with the first and move to the second if I can beat it. Guess I should start by getting to know the characters better.

It's totally fun to play/explore different characters. :)

You have chosen wisely.

^Same here. Great game but I also die a lot. You can usually get 2-3 dungeons in before I'm out of credits. LOVE the music...like Esteban is right about the PSG tuneage. I've never played DE2...but I've got so many other games to play, it has never bothered me.

My main is the Warlock.

It's all about farming for stat upgrades. Find out which enemies have a chance to drop which stat boosters and farm the crap out of them early on.

How to farm? I thought once you beat a boss, he was gone for good.

NecroPhile

He means the temporary buff items that go away when you die (like the crown and boots), not the color changing crystals.

But if you don't die, they stick around.

Got to some stupid tiger boss. I beat him but died twice, losing all buffs. Also, is there anything that can be done with poison? It's pretty annoying.

Tiger is the worst boss of the game...

in99flames

I got all the way through in dungeon explorer....couldnt beat through the last part. Needed to stat up more....so i did the logical(maybe?) thing and cheated. I put in the password code to walk through walls and be invincible....btw i suggest doing that to see the secret ending....quite humorous :-)

I certainly intend to do this when I finish. But I want to get as far as I can without cheating.

I'm guessing the farming trick is quite time consuming. I tried to do it some and didn't get anywhere. Of course, I didn't know which enemies to farm either...

Dungeon Explorer II is like the first, but it does everything better.  Love the game being larger, love being able to save your progress, love the redbook audio and the amazing cutscenes.

They're both great games, but man, nothing tops DE2.
Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Josh and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner (extortion/blackmail!), never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

crazydean

So far, the theme has been: kill a boss or two then get a game over. It's alright since there is a password system in place. I just fought Judas (real surprise that he turned out to be evil...) and died. As long as the rest of the game isn't much more difficult, I expect to beat it next time I play.

crazydean

DE 1 is down! I beat it with the Fighter today. That final boss was pretty tough. I died like 3 times during the fight, but the ending was nice. I didn't even see any engrish. I even beat it a second time using the code to get the secret ending, which was awesome!

Overall, I'm really happy with this game and will definitely recommend it in the future. I'll be starting the sequel here in a few days.

NecroPhile

Did ya unlock the Hermit?  I usually use him, else I'll start with the elf or thief and switch to the princess after freeing her.

Only by resetting and using her password.  As far as I know, there's no way to play as Princess Aki from the start.

I played him a bit. Couldn't figure out what the black potion was supposed to do. The attack looked cool though. It's difficult to really get a feel for each chapter without playing a significant portion of the game with each one.
