10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I just got this game. It's the first, and so far only game I've ever bought that was by Working Designs. Pretty fun so far! The voice acting's good too. Reminds me of ADV Films, and that's a big thumbs up. :D Haven't gotten that far in it yet. It's about an elf girl that's a bounty hunter, she can't catch a big break with what she does or whatever, then she hears about a big reward for an evil magician or something, and then she goes on an adventure to defeat him. Along the way, she meets some good magician or whatever called "Tatt" (I can already tell him and Mail are gonna end up falling in love or something later on), and some strange creature called "Gaw". The only version available in english is the Sega CD version, and it's really fun. People say it's an RPG, but it's really not. There are RPG ELEMENTS, but it's a platformer at heart.

It takes awhile before you get Gaw, so if you haven't gotten very far yet, I doubt you have him.

It's a good game, but it is far too easy.  I was surprised there weren't any poop jokes in it.

ParanoiaDragon

I don't remember it being easy, I do remember though, not being able to defeat the last boss.

Last boss is easy, just like the rest of the game.  Even I was able to beat it, and I have a hard time getting to round 4 in Samurai Shodown 2 on a difficulty level of 4.

You will eventually turn the voices off, as they become annoying after awhile.  Then you'll keep switching between voices on and off like I did.

MotoRoaderMike

I ain't tired of the voices so far. Like I said, they remind me of ADV Films, and that's awesome. :D

Well, you will eventually die at a boss, likely Sven T. Uncommon or whatever it is that he throws at you.  You WILL turn the voices off after you fight him 2 or 3 times just so you can skip the dialog sequence and get to the action.

Popful Mail (North American Mega-CD version) is not easy! :o I find it to be incredibly hard. I guess I just suck (that's not news). :P

I prefer the Super Famicom game though. It is very different from the MCD game, the controls are awkward in it, but it looks and sounds really nice. It's easier too. The PC Engine and PC-88/98 versions are rather weird (bump fighting, like in many other Falcom games), but interesting.

Overall however, I think Popful Mail is a pretty boring game.
Quote from: Seldane on 04/21/2007, 07:28 PMDVDs are for suckers. Illegally pirated and stolen videos all the way. No menus. No "DO NOT PIRATE THIS!" screens. No fuss. Only perfection. I honestly only pirate movies because that "don't pirate this" screen annoys me.

Indeed, it's AV time. Check out: IMG! Sir, the door was open.

I gave up on the WD version around the ice/snow area. It just got too cheap. I've been meaning to pick up the import('unfixed' version) ever since but its one of many games on the to-do list.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Popful Mail does pwn, and I'm glad someone else made the ADV connection! I would place money down that the Popful Mail people went to ADV.
Forgive me, my brain is on par with the Bubble System.

Yes, I am talking about the US version.  Easy!  Sure, you may need to fight some bosses two or three times, but it was easy!  Almost as easy as Gaiares!  I beat it, and I can't even figure out how to jump in and out of the screen in Fatal Fury!  See how easy US Popful Mail must be?  The worst thing about it is how close you walk to the edge of the screen.  The game is indeed cheap in that manner since it doesn't let you see and react to what is coming.  The SNES version licks hairy dog anus.

The US Sega CD version is one of my favorite games ever.

The SNES version is horrible. I played a ROM of it twice.

Yeah I wasn't impressed by the SNES version either from the little I've played. It's definitely a lot different from the others, as Seldane said. The graphics are kinda cool, but I still prefer the PCE and Sega CD graphics myself.

The PC Engine version is fun and completely different gameplay wise than the Sega-CD and SNES versions.

Dark Fact

This is a game I've really wanted to play ever since I saw the ad promos and articles for it in Gamepro magazine back in the heyday.  Man, I believe this game came out during the golden age of video gaming...which I believe to be early 90's. :)

Sorry, but I don't see your library card on the books of Ys.  Now, RETURN THEM TO ME!!!
