I voted Dragon Spirit since I haven't played the other one, lol. I guess that is not fair though.

Well thats good news, and makes me even more glad im getting the game and im sure i will be shacking my head why i even posted this when i get it. these newbies :P

I prefer Dragon Saber, though I could see how someone might prefer Spirit since Saber changes some things (and has a better soundtrack). Saber was just a lot more fun for me to play, especially on two player mode.

I had picked Dragon Spirit. I have yet to play both of them, but I've observed both of them well enough to maintain a preference, mainly from their soundtracks. For Dragon Spirit's soundtrack, it had left a deal of great impression on me when I had first heard it. I felt that it sounded like music between the NES and the Sega Genesis (this being my first exposure to the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16) and that being of superbly done music with the type of sounds used for it. Dragon Saber's music, however, isn't within the same greatness to me. I felt that it was very much dull and minotinous, with the notes within the tracks having feelings of badness and wrong places. It still is within the same style of Dragon Spirit's music, nonetheless.

Some may perfer the gameplay of Dragon Saber more since it features co-op play. It is recommended for fans of Dragon Spirit (particularly from Sunteam_Paul). Both games have the same graphical style and possibly controls.

Nice way of putting the music, Kirby.

However the two games do control different. In Dragon Saber, the dragon will automatically charge it's shot when no button is pressed. It's a little weird, but I kinda like it more that way. I'd also have to disagree with Paul and say that many people who didn't enjoy Dragon Spirit actually enjoyed Dragon Saber instead.

I actually own both and prefer Spirit more.  Saber to me was a bit of a let-down- not sure exactly what I was expecting but a let-down nonetheless.  I was hoping for a graphic/animation/sound upgrade- especially with double the meg- and I feel it fell way short.  Two-player also isn't as fun as I expected.  Call me crazy.  Just maybe I am!

Both of these games look much better however with the screen compressed from the arcade screen cheats.  Soldier Blade's arcade screen mode however looks five times better than that and to me is the peak of hucard shooter graphics- no I shouldn't be comparing the Dragon Spirit games to Soldier Blade but hey it just happens.  My love for Soldier Blade blurs everything!

Aside from all this I feel that Dragon Spirit catches more of a defined mood than its sequel.  Just feels righter.

Saber all the way, for me, it's got better graphics & music, & gameplay.  Plus Saber seems easier, which means I might be able to beat it!

Dragon Saber looks better, but Dragon Spirit has better tunes, and yet they both suffer from over sized hit boxes.  It's hard to pick a winner, but in the end I went with Dragon Spirit simply because it was released in the US and sports some lovely colored pencil artwork (which is far better than the lame, piss-yellow topped manual for Dragon Saber).

I'm just curious about the arcade screen cheats. That's awesome. I wish all shmups had this option.

Many do-- you probably just don't about them. Not all, however.

For the DS games you just have to reset the game like 50 times and on the 50th time it will reset in a hi-res vertical arcade resolution.

Does Raiden have a high resolution option?

....actually I'll just start a new thread to uncover which games have this option and which do not.  :)

Edit: I'll have to compare the MAME versions to make a decision. I'll be back later with my verdict.  :)

I haven't played Dragon Saber yet so I can't vote in this, but I did play Dragon Spirit and was disappointed, especially with the end of level dragons, which were really frustrating to fight against. I liked the music though.

Didn't one of these have a two player simultaneous mode in the Arcade? Is it the same for the PCE/TG16 version?

Well, knowing me I'll buy both. I've got a bad habit of buying HuCards just to collect them. Both games look similar.

if that's a bad habit then most of us here need some serious fucking help!   =P~
just kidding.  I play most of my games- though some certainly play me.

Dragon Saber! No contest!   :D

It has everything that made Dragon Spirit great and more. Better graphics, better music with digital drum beats, selectable difficultly modes, charge shots, more weapon power ups, and best of all, 2 player co-op!

Every PC Engine owner has to have this game!

Digi.k

I voted Dragon Saber..

Dragon Spirit plays better and after playing Dragon Saber in the arcades in 1992 I was hoping for great things on the pce version especially after seeing Konami dropped a huge 8mbit HUcard that was parodius I was hoping Namco was gonna do the same releasing D.Saber on either a 6 or 8MBit hucard.. ah wells.. personally I was let down with it..

At least the music BGM is terrific

Ceti Alpha

I just bought Dragon Spirit from Rover so I look forward to playing it again on the HuCARD format. Haven't played Dragon Spirit on the Turbo since it was on demo at Radio Shack. lol. Anyway, I just went on MAME and played a couple levels of each, and I have to say that Saber wins out IMO. Just a general improvement overall (i.e. BGM, graphics). Nothing drastic, but, at least in the arcade version Dragon Saber added some minor scaling with the enemies (i.e. those creatures that rise up from under the lava in the beginning of stage 2 - does the Turbo version try to emulate that scaling at all?).

Anyway, this is about the TG and not the arcade, but if these are at all similar I think Saber wins out.

Also, to be fair to Dragon Spirit, the arcade wasn't the prettiest thing to look at either. lol. People are really hard on Dragon Spirit, but man the TG port does it quite well. It's funny, but the TG could've really improved upon the arcade version of Dragon Spirit.

Im getting my copy of Dragon Saber on Sunday so i can then finally vote on my own poll :P
Looking forward to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

pixeljunkie

I love both. I think Spirit has better gfx in some areas and not as good in others. I think the eggs look better in Spirit than Saber for some reason. I put them at about equal honestly. They are both must-haves.

Sparky

ok, i finally got Dragon Saber and i have played it quite a few times now and my vote is still going to Dragon Spirit.
Dragon Saber is a lot better and more challenging but for the fun factor Dragon Spirit i likey better  call me crazy
