Been playing Rayxanber 2 for the past week or so. I think it's a pretty fun shooter, good graphics, I like the tunes quite a bit. The game is known as one of, if not the toughest shooter on the PC Engine, and so far it's living up to the reputation. The second level is pretty difficult for a second level but afther some plays getting to the fourth level isn't too bad. Once you get to the fourth stage however things get extremmly difficult and annoying. I have got to the boss but usually don't make it. The enemies are faster than the ship and there is a major slowdown that affects your turbo fire and you have to manual fire. I've read a few reviews and seen people say they didn't get past the 4th level without magic engine and save states, which I'm not interested in.

Question, has anyone beat the 4th stage let alone the game without cheats? I know there is a longplay on youtube but I'm pretty sure it's magic engine and save states. Gonna keep playing, hope to beat the game (I like to beat all my shooters, except Raiden because it sucks)

Seems this game could have been a classic top knotch shooter if you didn't have check points when you die or maybe a shield here and there. I don't mind a hard game but this one loses some point for how hard it is.

Any other opinions on this game??

It's tough, but it never changes.  Once you learn how to get through a section, you will always do it.
I and many others have cleared it.

Yes but have you 1CC'ed it?  I more than likely never will, but I have cleared it.  It's really just the 4th level that sucks.  The slowdown is what makes it a bitch for me.  It might help others but I hate the slowdown on that level.  Really messes me up.

I'm not man enough to eat the raisin bar.  That beeyotch is balls tough!

i had a raisinbar challenge a couple months ago and couldnt beat the boss in 4. i haven't given up yet though. I love the music and style of the game and find it quite fun. I like memorization shooters like that. Ive played through level 3 so many times its lime clockwork and I remember the first time I was like "this is impossible!".
What I think is hard about level 4 is that you want to use the lightening to get to the end hut you clearly need ice to beat the boss. Also I noticed that if you speed boost you weapn fires much faster. I couldnt figure out how the guy in that youtube playthrough was so good at taking out the enemies in that level until I noticed he boosted when he was shooting them from below with ife beam.
If you like the music I just uploaded the entire Ost on youtube.

Unless you put the game away for a year or two.  Good luck remembering all of the patterns.

I don't know, it's hard for me to believe on the 4th level all you have to do is memorize it (not saying you're lying I hope to get there!). The balls jump in random patterns and sometimes go through the web or whatever it is, the slow down is soooo messed up that it throws you way off then it kicks back to normal speed. I've got to the Boss on the 4th a few more times today but seems more like luck not ramming into something while ditching the alien guys while dealing with complete frustrating poor programming with that slow down at that point in the game. The first 3 levels I breeze through at this point then I hit the 4th and want to punch holes in the drywall. I think I'm getting the 4th level boss pattern down and should beat him soon and hopefully at that point I can continue enjoying the game.

SuperDeadite

Of course I've 1cc'd it.  I've also 1'cc the original Rayxanber as well.  (Rayxanber is way harder then Rayxanber II.)  Rayxanber II is also only 6 stages, tough but short and ends quickly.

Finally beat level 4, speed bust actually helps a lot during the crazyness during the slow down. Stage 5 went down easy, still have not yet got to the boss on stage 6. That board is nuts 100% need to memorize where everything is coming from, so I think I will eventually beat it with enough practice. Game overall is really fun except level 4.

I have a tough time on certain levels (not just the 4th), but yes, you can clear the 4th without the silly emulator.

That said, I remember being frustrated because I cannot CONSISTENTLY pass certain parts of certain stages--I literally choke and end up repeating the same poor maneuver that ruins things. WHY CAN'T I LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES?

I really should pull Rayxanber 2 and 3 out and give 'em some love. I haven't really spent any time with Rayxanber 3.

I know exactly what you mean esteban! Sometimes I get stuck on level 2 because it's so hard to remember the patterns. They are so fast and there is no landmarks at all, just a fast scrolling background so you have to get really good (and a little lucky) to get through a lot of parts. Now level 3 is super easy once you learn it though, it has a couple really tight spots, like you have to play it perfectly to get thoguh but once you learn it it's easy to remember. Level 4 is just tough though and there isn't really apattern, you just have to be fast and keep the bouncing rocks and and chasing enemies under control.

I beat the game last night!! That last level is totally insane. You need to take out as many of the wall cannons as possible, while avoiding the moving rocks and enemies without touching any wall in the tight, tight corridors. Basically you have no chance to beat it unless you memorize everything, then it's still tough. Took me hours to finally get it down, luckilly the last board is a blast to play!

I agree with Esteban also, I had parts I knew but would still screw up many times, makes you sooo frustrated. Part of it on this game is there is really no room for error so you can't lose concentration for even a split second.

Anyway, super glad I picked this game up, I had held off for a long time because of it's bad rep. The game is super hard, but the 4th stage is the only one where you feel it's actually unfair, but it's still clearable and gets easier with practice (use the speed burst a lot).

Now to see if I can 1cc the game like SuperDeadite, I don't think I will but if I can beat the 4th stage on my first life I have a chance. I'm still having fun with it so I will be trying.

Tatsujin

Konkrats. Yeah the chance is now, before you forget all the patterns and have to start from scratch again :)

Got it!

I was reading old Ray 2 posts on here and saw your thread. If you are still stuck on the 4th level keep at it! The 5th and 6th level are the prime parts of the game (along with stage 3). Just get use to using the speed bursts to avoid the aliens and rocks when needed (still hard). Also, it is easier to beat the boss with either green or ice if it's a vertical shot but you can beat the 4th boss with your pea shooter. Take your time, stay back and blow up the first orb or whatever it is, go down and time it right with a speed burst to get under to the other side, position yourself in the safe spot underneath the orb to kill the boss, when you have time slide up and take a few shots then get back before an alien or energy beams gets you (if you have a vertical shot just stay still and blast away).

Anyway, I love the 6th stage, keep playing it like it's a caravan to see how perfect of runs I can get, wish they had a stage select so I could go right to it without dealing with the 4th level. It's one of my favorite stages in a shooter ever!

Wow, Rayxanber 2 is getting some bonafide love :pcgs:.
