hello,

has anyone ever played the dragon knight series? i have 2 and 3 for pc engine and they look pretty interesting, but i have yet to play them.
it only bugs me that they are heavily censored. the MSX versions are uncut right? does anyone know how to set up and play with a japanese MSX system?

and how do you like the pc engine dragon knight episodes? are they worth to be played? do you know some good walkthroughs? i only know of the one for part 2 at brotherduomazovs.

thanks

Dragon Knight is a wonderful series.  Played them a few times.  The PC-Engine versions don't have the pr0n, but they are full remakes of the computer versions.  All of the them got a major graphical over haul, CD audio by T's music, full voice overs, and an automap.

Now the PC versions have the boobies, but they are very old PC rpgs.  1 and 2 don't even have floors and ceilings, just walls.  Also no automap, the games actually came with grid paper and a pencil board to draw your own.   They are still worth playing, but I would stick to the X68000 (1-4) or FM Towns (3-4) versions.  They are all the same games, only really differences are music chip, and amount of floppy disks:

DK1:  MSX- 4 disks, X68000- 2 disks
DK2:  MSX- 9 disks, X68000- 4 disks
DK3:  X68000 - 6 disks, FM-Towns: 1 CD
DK4:  X68000 - 13 disks!, FM-Towns 1 CD

X68000 versions of 3 and 4, do have hard drive install options so you don't have to floppy swap.  DK2 on MSX is a floppy swap nightmare, trust me, I actually played through 1 and 2 on my real MSX. :)  Also the X68k has the best FM chip of all the computers, and has the best music.  Though the PCE versions have amazing music which is totally different.  There are also NEC PC computer versions, but I know little of them, but again should be identical.  The X68k is way more powerful then MSX, but the games are graphically identical, only the resolution is higher on X68k...

The PCE versions are enhanced versions of the original, games, and is for people who want a more graphical enhancement of the original games with voices, sounds. The games was edited for store and commercial usage, because it is considered a toy/

If you want it for the story, and enhancement then get it, otherwise you will have to invest, or via internet. Think of it like Valis for the PCE.
It was made as good as it could be.

With the keyboard and controller

You fortunately get to experience auto booting games, so minimal interaction with the computer is required.

The MSX is only expensive if you look in the wrong places.

Getting a working MSX2 w/ a floppy drive to play disk games will run you under 200$

There are some other options too.   It's alot to take in all at once.  Might wanna start a new thread.

No idea if there is a walkthru.   I don't use those.  lol.

For MSX though, you should get your feet wet with an emulator first.  The real hardware can be disappointing if you get one with a broken keyboard or floppy belt.

You click file--->attach diskimage and click the power-on button, probably.

and how do i operate the run button with my keyboard? it said disk image ok and then the screen is blue and on the bottom there are the options: color, auto, goto, list, run

SuperDeadite

Put disk A in, rest machine, game boots itself.  If you want English, Dragon Knight 3 was released in the USA on PC as "Knights of Xentar."  The translation is decent for it's time, but 3 really builds off 1 and 2.  Lots of characters you are supposed to remember, and you won't if you don't play the first 2 games before.

all you do is load the emulator, then put disk a in drive 1, then "power on" or "reset" the emulator.  That's really it.  But again, I'd recommend the X68000 version over the MSX version.  Cause MSX DK1 doesn't have music.  Just a few sound effects here and there.  The X68k's music isn't the best, but it has actual music at least.

ok i did so but why does it still not work?^^

it says disk ok and if i push "enter" there comes syntax error...

which emulator did you use with which roms? i have 4 disk datas for DK1.

is there also a good x68000 emulator out there?

I agree that X68000 is the version to play for Dragon Knight 1.  Unfortunately, the disk image for DK1 that's floating around on the internet is screwed up -- disk 2 doesn't work.  I played through the game on a real X68 (before it exploded).

MSX DK1 is 4 disks.  You put the A disk in the first drive, and switch them when the game tells you to.  DK2 MSX supports dual drives, but I can't remember if the first games does or not.

For X68000 emulation, "XM6 High Speed" is the one to use.  But I stick to my real machine, so I have little experince with it besides testing a few disk images i've personally dumped.

So it came?

PCE is the most best version of the game that is non-computer class, with voices,
smooth graphics, etc. However your living in censor land. The X6800 is a beautiful
workstation, and that is what you are playing. For space, and sanity I would get the
PCE, game. However if you want nook, nook etc then check out the computer game.

I recently picked up Dragon Knight III for the PCE and it's been a lot of fun so far.  I tried to play it without the use of a walkthrough, but ended up getting stuck.  I had to find an old hermit that was at the end of  a secret passageway, who would give me a magic mirror that would allow me access into one of the nearby dungeons.   :-k

So I found a great walkthrough on gamefaqs, under the game name "Knights of Xentar": http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/knights_of_xentar_b.txt

It's helped me progress pretty far into the story and even showed me a couple of things I missed.

SuperDeadite

Xentar is DKIII, but there's a lot of differences, as the PCE game is a remake by NEC Avenue.  It's a good basic guide, but a lot of stuff, like Luna's spell gathering doesn't exist in the PCE version.

Not really. There are some Japanese PC version walkthroughs, but quite a bit was changed on the PCE.  It's a very easy game to clear though.  You have an automap, just visit every square in every floor, you'll get through it.
