Have you "haggled" at a thrift/pawn/retail store?

First time today and I succeeded. I only brought $10 cash with me and the total the lady came up with was $16-something. Felt empowering to get something for the exact amount I had with me.

It's different online because you have that certain anonymity so it's not as personal (face to face).

yeah, it all depends on where i'm at, used game stores often get it from me.
that said, i wouldn't haggle at say, target.

TheClash603

To go to the flea market is to haggle.  That is typically the best part of going, it is fun to negotiate.

BTW- The "all I have is $xxx" is a classic haggle technique.  I typically only have small bills at the flea market and I only pull out a portion of my money at any given time.

DragonmasterDan

Yep I haggle, generally with second hand stuff sold by flea market vendors, independent store owners, and such.

bob

When I visit a used game store, I usually buy a couple things at asking price, then I have a bit of leverage when I want to haggle later on.

Senshi

PSN: Dynastic_Hero
Steam: Dynastic_Hero

Arkhan Asylum

At flea markets I just go "How much you want for this" and see if they even remember what they priced it at.

They usually go "uhhhh, 5$" even if it says more.

and then I go "I'll give you 3$"

and they go "Ok"

That is how I acquired Vay.

This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

turboswimbz

yep all the time.  Most of the time when you have money and want to buy, and people are sitting on TG16 stuff, they won't care.

Best one to date, Dead Moon Huey for $10
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

FiftyQuid

I haggle without even thinking about it.  I needed an umbrella stand for a patio set.  Saw one at a local flea market.  Price on it was $8 so I said to the guy "Would you take $2 for this?", he looked at me and said "What's the price on it?"  Without thinking I read the $8 price tag out to him, he then asked for $5.  I ended up giving him $4.  If I had been smart I should have said the sticker price was $5.  8)
I'm busy playing pinball, but I still drop by to visit.

CGQuarterly

I haggle at the flea market just about any time I go.  I only haggled at a thrift store once, and that was because they had a boxed wireless NES controller that they wanted $25 for, and it had been there for awhile (I would see it every time I went in there).  I finally just told them flat out that it had been sitting there for quite some time because they were asking more than it was worth.  They lowered the price and I bought it.

In general, I don't haggle with charity-based thrift stores, though.

I'll haggle with some places, it depends on the situation though.  I absolutely hate haggling with my wife around because she always gives me shit about haggling over a couple dollars.

THOSE DOLLARS ADD UP WOMAN!

I like having my wife with me when I go to the flea market, because they take one look at my white ass, with my polo shirt and whatnot and quote me top dollar.  My wife, who is Mexican, can haggle with them in Spanish.  She speaks their language and is cute, so she gets WAY better deals.

Also, we anglos don't really come from a culture of haggling, so we suck at it. And the corporate drones we buy stuff from don't have the authority to negotiate. Go to any non-first-world country and haggling is a way of life.

There are 3 thrift shops I regularly visit.  Salvation Army (3 locations within 50 miles) and Goodwill (7 within 50 miles) are all major source of relics I buy.  Normally they do not haggle and I've never tried.

The third one is a local charity shop just a few miles away, almost everything is 25 cents (books and mags are 10 cents).  It's almost silly to try and haggle for a few more cents.  In fact I left more than what I took out, probably over $1,000 worth of old clothes, commercial VHS tapes, audio tapes, obsolete but working computer stuff, and more.  It's also my favorite source of surprises, like a working Zebra thermal printer for 25 cents (they still go over $100 working on eBay) all I needed was a roll of 4x6 (any size from 1" to 4" wide, and 1" to 6" long works) labels and I could print out address labels or full postage paid label if I can.

RegalSin

It really depends, on what store you are buying from. Salvation Army for example, loves me when I pay $22 for something that is worth $6. These stores are charitable, stores, not for profit. So it really depends, because most of the stuff will be thrown away, or was from a chruch donation.

ive haggled a bit with my local game store. I'll be going to a flea market next weekend, so i will try my luck there as well

JoshTurboTrollX

I try to keep on top of going rates (If there really is such a thing) of goods that I search for at thrift shops.  So it truly depends on what I see.  I see Laserdisc movies for a couple bucks each, I'll gladly pay the price they ask and just move on knowing I've made a great deal.  No point in trying to milk a few extra dollars out of the sellers.  However, if I see something drastically overpriced I usually scoff at it or sometimes mention to the clerks how overpriced they are.  IE, once I saw NES SMB, Contra, and RC Pro Am for $20 each, loose no case or instructions.  Wasn't even worth going up to the counter to let them know these weren't worth more than a few dollars each, as they just told me they would go down a couple dollars only.

It's like.... really?

It's one thing when clueless thrift stores do this, but, worse than that, I've been seeing NES/SNES stuff intentionally overpriced by a lot of knowledgeable indie stores. A couple places near me have average prices for Sega, 3DO, and Atari, but their Nintendo goods are sky-high because they can capitalize on the nostalgia factor of casual shoppers that aren't retro gamers. I've seen $20 for Faxandu, $25 Metal Gear, $30 Mega Man 2, $40 for SMB2 - all LOOSE. Apparently people wander in and go "oh look, honey, remember this?"

total quote was $270.

he came back with $200 out the door same job as before, and i took it

Went to a Pawn Shop in northern New Hampshire last week.  Most stuff was pretty overpriced.
$70 for a PS1
$60 for an XBOX
$110 for an intellivision
XBOX/PS2/Wii games all $15 each (mostly madden and Zoo games)

But I did see this in the case for $29.  I assumed something wrong with it, or maybe it was just the box.  I asked to see it and it looks brand new.  Outer shell even still has the film on it.
I offered $25 and they took it.  Not a steal, but a small win in the current gaming environment.

I actually prefer this model since I really don't care for DS, but is GBA compatible.

haha.  I remembered a thread like this from years back so I searched for "pawn".
Then I found this and it was gold.  Storino, RegalSin, you can't get much better than that.

Gypsy

$70 PS1 has to be the highlight of that post.

xcrement5x

I'd rather have a NecroPhile bump of an old thread if it's still relevant.
