So, i just moved into my girlfriend's place a couple months ago. The other day, i was gettin a little turbo in before I went to my band practice, when her son comes in the room and asked the question we here all loathe...What's that?! hehe Quite the smile on my face. Being he is at the tender, impressionable age of 10 (hmmm, thats the age i got turned onto it), what could I do when he asked to play but go from the start. I popped in KC and his first impression was, like many, "man, this sucks!"  #-o  But i told him, play through the first level and give it a chance.

You should have seen the look on his face when Keith put on the Nova suit and buzzed off the page to fight flying skulls and ...gun-heads lol   He was hooked. I left for my band practice only to return several (3) hours later to find him still playing!! At that point he was playing Blazing Lazers (coincidentally, this was my second purchase back in the day) He said he beat KC and shuffled a few more games before settling on BL.

Then, b4 u know it, he has friends over tearing up every multi-player I own! splash lake, bomberman, aero blasters, SF2CE etc. These kids LOVE IT! I find them skipping their 360 to ask me if they can play my duo and it is just the coolest thing in the world! Just thought I'd share this as ya'll might like to hear that.

Very nice story.  It's good to hear of kids reveling in the 16-bit Turbo glory, rather than bitching about how it sucks without ever giving it a fair shake.  8)

Agreed.

Regarding Keith Courage though, I had a different first experience when I was little. I remember playing it in Electronics Boutique and thinking how cool it was. I even thought the gunheads were neat  It's never ceases to amaze me how certain things can seem so cool when your little.

That story is PURE WIN. I have a little sister who I like to play with, but recently, she pissed me off by saying she doesn't like "old" games. I never understood kids who always think graphics are so much more important than just having a good time. In fact, that's a problem with every aspect of the U.S.A. right now, all flash and no substance. :-({|=

That's the problem everywhere.  They (MS and Sony) push these amazing graphics on us and they think that's the selling point.  There is no development in story lines or replay value (not all games, but many).  They recycle the same game and put different characters and we buy it up.  This is the reason I get sick of the 'next gen' games after a month, but keep going back to the 'old' games.  Because that's what they are, games, not just graphical artwork.

And I agree, good story.
Another douche trying to obtain a full Turbo collection.  119/146 so far.  Got a long way to go. Half way there. Hit the 100 mark. ich bein ein obeyer

Yay for introducing kids to old games!

However, under no circumstances would I let a kid's introduction to the Turbo be Keith Courage. I'd have picked Bonk or Blazing Lazers, but he found the latter on his own, so there ya go.

Yeah, giving kids KC as an introduction to the Turbo is like making them watch the TOS episode "Spock's Brain" as an introduction to Star Trek.  :P

Seriously though, that's a great story. Most of us were introduced to the Turbo through KC and it's amazing that our love for the machine only grew out of that experience. It's actually not THAT bad of a game, but it's certainly no where near the best. I have friends my age that scoff at 16 bit graphics. Even they're blinded by those graphically flashy games that have little to no gameplay value. Nothing bores me more when I'm playing a PS3/360 game where all you do is walk from checkpoint to checkpoint with hardly any resistance or difficulty. Again, online gaming is really the only thing that makes new consoles worthwhile, but even then you can just play those games on the PC. That's just my two cents on the whole thing. I just find that when I'm playing new generation consoles I'm just wishing I could play some multiplayer Dungeon Explorer or Bomberman. And those friends I mentioned that scoff at 16 bit graphics usually have the best time ever when they're playing multiplayer Bomberman.

Yea the only reason for givin him KC first was, like many of us, it was our first expierence with the system and look at us today! lol I found each game I played kinda got better and impressed me enough to continue to get more. This prolly wouldn't have happened if I was shown the best of the best first, cuz everyother game would have just been a little more dissapointing :(

That's a good point. You don't want to start off with Sapphire or Dracula X. heh

My niece likes Gotzendeiner, she tried a few others, but this one is easy to wander around without getting killed and the whole 'playing a princess' thing is appealing.

Great story, thank you!  Keith Courage was ballsy, but I think a good move.  It's off-beat and a little dorky but also subtlety rewarding and if someone likes it they'll probably like all Turbo games.  The play control on Bonk is good enough that even a modern gamer without retrogaming potential can get caught up, but only for a few minutes.  KC is a good way to weed out the twerps.

i think it was a good move too, he wasn't much into a lot of sports games on modern consoles, and i figured i grew to love it, Im sure he can too!

it was basically hit or miss, he plays and loves it....or thinks it sucks and makes fun of me everytime i play it, lol

I have a similar story. I mentor a 17 year old kid (troubled youth big brother kinda thing). He's big into the 360 and WoW, but I showed him my game room. I showed him lots of different systems, but the Neo and the TG-16 are his favorites.

He absolutely loves the TG16. In fact, he's become a huge shooter fan, and often would rather play Raiden, one of the Soldier games, or R-type at the expense of the latest 360 game. We've spent several hours playing shooters on several occasions.

That said, you guys actually sold people on the console with Keith Courage? I've always hated that game, even when I got it as a kid. I loved many of the other games, but Keith Courage was never one I liked much, even though I've played through it. The gun guys were kinda cool though.

I sell the TG with Lords of Thunder, Dungeon Explorer, Bomberman and Legendary Axe II. One of those ALWAYS works.

...and if you can't sell them on those games, then there's no hope. I just don't see how it's possible for people not to love those games.

rad story, indeed.
though the outcome is definitely exactly as i would expect from any human being actually playing the games and not just looking at them, or barely sampling them before writing them off.

you should get a medal for saving that youngster's gaming life ;)

It just goes to show you that gameplay is where it is at. After all, people still rave about new games like Castlevania, Gradius V, Raiden Fighters Aces, Muramasa, Alien Hominid and the like. Most of them are damn near identical to what you play on the TG/PCE, just with better graphics.

If a game is truly good, and not just a fad, it will *always* be fun.

The PC Engine just seems to have a lot more of those than the other systems from the era, in my book. Most of the friends I've shown the system to agree. It's aged remarkably well, particularly the imports.

I still think it's the single greates system for shooters.

Ha ha man that is awesome, great story indeed. I love it! I remember my first TurboGrafx experience clear as day, it was Devil's Crush. That got me hooked big time. Than every time we went to Fred Myer's or Best I would go straight to the TG-16 where they had Bonk's Adventure playing on demo. Man those were good times. Than I got my own finally some years later. Games like Final Lap Twin, R-Type, Bomberman, Ninja Spirit(a personal fave of mine)kept me glued to the tv screen for hours on end. I remember one of my friends in grade school had a turbo express so we would always bring our games to play on his express, during recess and afterwards in after school daycare. Man what great times

You know whats funny, is I have managed to get even my own daughter(2 1/2 years of age) into taking an interest in games in general but specifically TG-16. I once walked into my gameroom only to see that she had picked up a controller and was playing Xak Gaiden:Fray CD and she had the biggest smile on her face even though she had obviously no idea what she was doing.

It's good that we are indoctrinating the youth of today with the consoles of yesteryear.

My daughter doesn't really play too many games yet, but I am looking forward to the day when we play Parasol Stars, Chew Man Fu, Wonderboy III: Monster Lair, AeroBlasters, Dungeon Explorer, MotoRoader, etc. together.

She already listens to some choice PSG / Red Book tunes, of course, because I control the playlist on her iPod

We are sick, sick people. :|
